You know that I was for many years virtually part of the family of Joy Barendse - the ex-wife of the famous SA jockey - Charlie Barendse. Their only daughter Kerry married Aubrey Roberts - a jockey himself and later a trainer, We were probably the most regular race goers in the 1970's and 1980's. Kerry's two daughters married Jeff Lloyd and Glen Schofield - two of the leading jockeys in SA who moved to Australia in 2007.
In any event I had a phone call this evening informing me that Joy passed away Thursday at the age of 100 years and I felt terribly distraught by the news - for me it felt that I have lost a family member, When I met you in Sydney in 2008 I was visiting the family.
