The following from News 24:-
"The rugby gurus at Sport24 have named their teams to face Samoa. Who do you agree with?

South Africa face Samoa on Saturday at Villa Park in a match described by Springbok flank Schalk Burger as a "final".

Springbok team to face Samoa, as chosen by Sport24's rugby panel*:

Garrin Lambley - Sport24 Editor

15 Willie le Roux, 14 Bryan Habana, 13 Jesse Kriel, 12 Damian de Allende, 11 JP Pietersen, 10 Handre Pollard, 9 Fourie du Preez, 8 Duane Vermeulen, 7 Schalk Burger (captain), 6 Francois Louw, 5 Lood de Jager, 4 Eben Etzebeth, 3 Jannie du Plessis, 2 Bismarck du Plessis, 1 Beast Mtawarira

Garrin says: "No Jean de Villiers for me in midfield. Time to re-unite the youngsters. Same story for Victor Matfield. With experience comes age... and Victor's over the hill. Burger leads in their absence."

Rob Houwing - Sport24 chief writer

15 Willie le Roux, 14 Bryan Habana, 13 Jesse Kriel, 12 Damian de Allende, 11 Lwazi Mvovo, 10 Handre Pollard, 9 Fourie du Preez, 8 Schalk Burger, 7 Francois Louw, 6 Siya Kolisi, 5 Victor Matfield (captain), 4 Eben Etzebeth, 3 Jannie du Plessis, 2 Bismarck du Plessis, 1 Trevor Nyakane

For the rationale behind Houwing's reasons click HERE

Herman Mostert - Rugby journalist

15 Pat Lambie, 14 Bryan Habana, 13 Jesse Kriel, 12 Damian de Allende, 11 Lwazi Mvovo, 10 Handre Pollard, 9 Fourie du Preez, 8 Duane Vermeulen, 7 Schalk Burger, 6 Francois Louw, 5 Victor Matfield (captain), 4 Eben Etzebeth, 3 Frans Malherbe, 2 Bismarck du Plessis, 1 Trevor Nyakane

Herman says: "I can’t find space for Jean de Villiers at present. He was a liability on defence against Japan, while I also opted for two new starting props."

Lloyd Burnard - Rugby journalist

15 Willie le Roux, 14 JP Pietersen, 13 Jean de Villiers (captain), 12 Damian de Allende, 11 Bryan Habana, 10 Handre Pollard, 9 Fourie du Preez, 8 Duane Vermeulen, 7 Willem Alberts, 6 Francois Louw, 5 Lood de Jager, 4 Eben Etzebeth, 3 Jannie du Plessis, 2 Bismarck du Plessis, 1 Beast Mtawarira

Lloyd says: "Jean de Villiers is the man tasked with leading this side at the Rugby World Cup, and I think we need to back that decision now. For that reason, Jesse Kriel misses out to accommodate Damian de Allende"

The first listed team is to my mind nearest the mark.  De Villiers was putrid against Japan and Matfield as bad with his zero contribution to the Tight 5.

I would also change the props - with Malherbe and Nyakane getting the selection ahead of Du Plessis and Beast who played for 15 minutes and then going AWOL in the game agai nst Japan.

So no room for Lambie  even among the gormless journalists.  No room for Stephanie, although incredibly Houwig picks Kolisi. No room for Kirchner. No room for Coenie. Well game, set and match I'd say....my match comments full reflected in the choices.

And the media was screaming for Lambie after the Argentina loss. Don't expect the penny to drop for long though. Next time Pollard dares to kick a ball out on the full the chant will go up again.

Stuff useless Louw and Jannie. Play Coenie and Kolisi and add PSDT at 7 ahead of Schalk

Interesting.......
Consensus picks:
2 - Bismarck4 - Eben9 - FDP10 - Pollard12 - De Allende11/14 - Habana
Near consensus picks (3 out of 4):
3 - Jannie 8 - Duane7/8 - Schalk13 - Kriel6/7 - Louw15 - Willie
The captain (JDV) only makes one side - big call, will Meyer do it?
The consensus team for Samoa:
1. Beast/Nyakane 2. Bissie 3. Jannie 4. Eben 5. Matfield/Lood 6. Louw 7. Schalk 8. Vermuelen 9. FDP 10. Pollard 11. JP/Mvovo 12. De Allende 13. Kriel 14. Habana 15. LeRoux

Anyone who watched Samoa vs NZ earlier this year will know what they are physically capable of. Tuilagi, the left wing, is a matchup Meyer will have to game plan. Is Habana our best option to defend there, or put a bigger body like JP on the right wing? Hansen used Moala against him. Nanai-Williams is their game breaker and will have to be a marked man.

Against the Samoans as a physical team I would not play Matfield - he is a physical liability.
Alberts is still functioning from a fat strain injury and did not train yesterday - so he is highly unlikely to play.   That leaves a problem at 7 - where I think Louw is a passenger in any event.   From a physicality perspective I would stick with Du Toit - he will not have to play lock and loosie - because of Matfield is never contributing to the Tight 5 if the latter is not playing.   .

For Samoa - I could see Meyer possibly opting for Lood / Eben. If JDV doesn't play (phantom injury alert btw) however you would think he would have Matfield in as captain.
With Vermuelen healthy, Schalk will almost surely be at 7 and Louw at 6. PSDT didn't make a physical impression against the smaller Japanese, why would he against Samoa. Schalk brings so much more to the table as far as rugby smarts over PSDT. He is by far our most creative and best linking forward and has the kahunas to try and pull it off. He made some errors on Saturday, but they were almost brilliant moments as well.

I have a problem with Burger and the way he played on Saturday,  Burger is NOT a strong ball carrier and that was his main problem on Saturday.  His other problem si that he was inaccurate in what he was doing I think on at least two occasions he had rushes of blood to his head - which cost us dearly.
However, I would play Burger at 6, Du Toit at 7 and Vermeulen at 8.   That would also together with De Jager and Etzebeth give us absolute control in line-outs and the strength to use rolling mauls effectively.   This would never be the case with Matfield in the mix as a lock.

Mike, Burger was never a strong carrier, but rather a link player that can take contact and offload. He is not an openside. PSDT will get his chance, but not starting ahead of Scalla at thus stage.

What is the function of Louw in the team?  He does squat and is only a name on the teamsheet so why should he be in the team?

mike louw i assume must be one hell of a court jester as i cannot see any other reason for keeping him in the starting 15
there is no open siders in the squad so what to do ???
meyer cornered himself with this selection.
if meyer wants to our kick the samoas i have some news for him. most of them play in the nh and have no weakness what sover to the high ball so if they intend to stand behind the posts all day long i suggest they actually plan to attack with some width and speed of pass.
