This is the area where we have been totally fallen behind in world rugby. It is so important at test level especially with referees from the North that allow more competition at the rucks.
We rarely get fast clean possession these days.
We are certainly not in the top5 teams in the world at ruck play; we may even be behind the likes of Italy and Scotland at ruck play.
We use to have Bismark, Duane Vermeulen- and to some degree Flouw and Strauss that could compete on the ground. (and Brussouw for a short while). (Even Coenie was effective at ruck play before his injury).
Now we have a pack of forwards that are totally useless at phase play.Yes- pathetic coaching is no doubt a factor- because no one knows what the other is doing.
Of the current bunch we call our Bok forwards, only Steph DuToit has any effect at retaining possession - and to some degree Louw.
Our loosies are so far behind play it is a joke.
Fat Albert is no fetcher, but neither are the smaller players.
Whitely is more of a loose roaming 8- instead of the Vermeulen Bok prototype number 8.
Qoupa is useless at ruck play. His play is limited to a few lineouts and tackles, with the rest him aimlessly running around hitting people with his head.
Our tight five is, for the most part, useless at the ruck.Adrian Strauss is too fat to reach the ground, while Beast is more of a ball carrier.
Our tightheads are just players that focus on first phase possession.
