How did the Springboks measure up in the test?   Lets look at the performances:-

Kirchner        -        Never showed anything 4 out of 10

Pietersen      -        Very little to show bar that pass to De Villiers - 5 out of 10

De Villiers    -         Top display on attack 7 out of 10 - missed one tackle - otherwise it was 8 out of 10

Steyn            -         Did not show much   6 out of 10

Habana       -          8 out of 10

Steyn            -          4 out of 10 (will deal with this in detail later

Hougaard   -          4 out of 10

Spies           -          Maybe 5 out of 10 (I am generous here)

Alberts        -            7 out of 10

Etzebeth      -           7 out of 10

Kruger         -           6 out of 10

Coetzee      -            7 out of 10

Beast          -            5 out of 10

Bismarck    -           5 out of 10

Jannie         -           5 out of 10

The ratings for the replacements  -   Lambie    -   6 out of 10

                                                                  Pienaar    -   6 out of 10

Strauss     -    4 out of 10 - buggered up horribly with last line out

Lets look at the reasons for the above:-

01:45    -      Hougaard buggered up letting opposition get to the ball

05:55    -      Bismarck gave away pemnalty

09:52   -       Hougaard kick charged down

13:15   -       Aimless kick by Steyn - could have been a try

17:00   -       Steyn kicked too far - England counter-attacked - aimless kick

22:25  -         Spies lost ball in attack

24:25   -       Spies buggered up again - penalty

32:42   -      Aimless kick by Steyn - handing over ball to England

34:32   -      Same story

35:40   -      Kruger lost line out - knocked ball forward

47:38   -      Steyn made bad relieving kick - Handing ball back to England.

53:20   -       Hougaard took quick penalty kick -  that was irresponsible

63:41   -       Spies knocked forward

63:45   -       Pietersen gave away penalty

The above only reflect useless actions leading to loss of the ball or penalties.

I said earlier that it depends which Hougaard turned up to play today - unfortunately it was thee bad Hougaard.

Aside from his relatively poor performance - Morne Steyn missed 2 conversions and a penalty kick.   The try scored by Steyn made me give him 4 out of 10 - otherwise it was 3 out of 10.

I tend to agree Mike but I'd say our front row defintely had the wood on the Poms at scrum time.

Good ratings overall clevermike. I would give Alberts an 8, one of our only forwards to have a real impact. Lambie was way better than Kitchener when he came on.

Spoes was useless, cant believe how easy he gets knocked over. His play from the base of the scrum was extremely poor, putting a lot of pressure on his halfbacks.

Hougaard should get a zero, really slow passing and showed no brains. I would start pienaar next weak, drop hougaard completely and bring in Vermaak.

Morne actually had a good game for me, solid tackling, played more flat, but his kicking game was really poor.

I  would rather give Jantjies a crack and play Lambie at 15.

King of Corn Hougaard is possibly the most dangerous wing we have. hH will not be dropped as scrummie just yet. His defence is superb and he may yet improve. The open secret is to bring on Pienaar and move Hougaard to the wing.

You know what's funny? I mentioned that Hougaard is not yet the most astute tactician, yet was lambasted. CleaverMike particulary deriding me. Now, we have a complete turnaround. What a bunch of fickle turncoats.

Du Preez and Hougaard still the best we have.

Lunatic

Good points - but I am a very hard person to please - so maybe I could be abit more generous in the point allocation stakes.   However, I always consider the issue of both positive and negatives in allocation of points.

i agree with you on Pietersen - he really had a nothing game yesterday and 4 out of ten is generous.    Kirchner did very little to warrant a satisfactory assessment and I think Meyer replaceed him as a result of that .   To my mind 4 out of ten is applicable in this case.

The rest of the ratings are very much the same with very little variation.

I saw the report on News 24 on the game and was amazed to see how close their assessment of some players were to mine.   In general the players I identified as under-performers were identified by them as well, whilst the players I gave higher ratings to played well according to News 24.

The above prove that der other assessment is totally off the mark and the work of a blinkered person from somewhere north of the Jukskei River in Gauteng..

I think we should now understand why Heyneke was so eager to get Fourie du Preez back into the Bok team. Hougaard @9 is defensively excellent and also very dangerous when he runs from a loose ball but he tends to be slow from set pieces. I remember Sarel Pretorius trapping him a few time behind the scrum when the Bulls played against the Cheetahs in 2011.

Mike, News24 are notorious for their stupidity. That you have found a common ground with them is nothing to brag about. They make Keo's bunch look like most knowleadgable fans on the planet.

Genugtig!!!!
