John Gainsford was perhaps the first modern centre....where's Marius, so much better than Fury.
Some great moments....but Joost created more than anybody in those late nineties clips. What a fabulous rugby player!

Gainsford in fact was not only very good on the game on the field - he became the mentor pf players like Gerber and De Villiers. Te latter went so far as to rpaise Gainsford for hat he told him.
However, centers in SA has a major problem as they depend largely on =
* what the are fed with by especially by the flyhalfs; and
* whether the game plans of coaches actually allows them to operate.
We had had totally inept flyhalfs since Honiball Pollard in his first two tests showed major improvement - but he the got caught in the garbage Meyer called his game plan and nearly self-destructed, He was playing 100% better rugby in 2018 compared to 2015.
There was for many years a total absence of what backlines ere to be used for in playing attacking rugby. A wise guy like White realized it and he brought Eddie Jones to help out in the 2007 WC campaign, For the rest the centers had to deal with totally incompetent coaches whose major deficiency was total ignorance about backline play and total BS game plans - in fact it is not clear if they even had such game plans.
