15 Willie le Roux, 14 Cheslin Kolbe, 13 Lukhanyo Am, 12 Damian de Allende, 11 Makazole Mapimpi, 10 Handre Pollard, 9 Faf de Klerk, 8 Duane Vermeulen, 7 Pieter-Steph du Toit, 6 Siya Kolisi (captain), 5 Lood de Jager, 4 Eben Etzebeth, 3 Frans Malherbe, 2 Bongi Mbonambi, 1 Tendai Mtawarira

Substitutes: 16 Malcolm Marx, 17 Steven Kitshoff, 18 Vincent Koch, 19 RG Snyman, 20 Franco Mostert, 21 Francois Louw, 22 Herschel Jantjies, 23 Frans Steyn

As I expected, Bongi Mbonambi has forced his way into the starting XV at the expense of an under-performing Malcolm Marx.

The other changes are Lood de Jager in for Franco Mostert (Dave and ou Maaik will be happy!) and Tendai Mtawarira in for Steven Kitshoff.

Go Bokke!

Good team.

Like the sacking of Elton Jantjies.

This might be a Rassie experiment with Frans Steyn at 10.

Is Nkosi dropped or injured?

We really only picking Steyn on the bench?

That's a bit strange, no?

How badly has Kriel fallen out of favor. Yikes.

Plum, Sbu Nkosi is dropped but he was never in the "A" team. Same goes for Elton Jantjies and everyone else who played last week. They're not "sacked" or "dropped", they were always going to play the games against Namibia (and possibly Canada) while the "A" team played against New Zealand and Italy.
The changes I indicated are from the team that played the All Blacks. That's Rassie's "A" team so the players who have effectively been dropped are Malcolm Marx, Steven Kitshoff and Franco Mostert. Everything else is as it was against New Zealand including the bench.
Jesse Kriel is not out of favour. He has had a hamstring niggle since the tournament started so hasn't been considered for a single game yet.

There is one group of site members who -

*   never realized that due to deficient physicality Mostert weakens the Tight 5 and that he is kind of a loosie extra in this case; and

*   who blames Erasmus for Marx being out of form because he was disappointed about the firing of Coetzee as coach.

Weird - but true.   If Kriel was fit to play  Mostert will not have been in the team at all.

I think that Italy will lose by circa 25 points.   Mind you I am not far off - I predicted the Springboks will beat Namibia by 55 points and they beat them by 54.

Strzok and Co

Who is "and Co"?

There are two comments on the issue on this board. One is Blikkies saying this:

Drop in Marx's performance. Are we seeing the impact of Swys de Bruyn's departure now?

The other is Mozart saying this:

In looking back at articles on Marx, I noticed he said he felt sorry for Coetzee. Maybe he is less comfortable in the new set up, his peak year was probably 2017.....you may be on to something Blikkies.

So where in all that do you get Erasmus being blamed for Marx's performance by "a group of site members" or even "Strzok and co", Propaganda Mike?

Caught in a lie yet again, Propaganda Mike. No one blamed Rassie for anything, and "Strzok" at best said that Marx may be uncomfortable in the new setup. Even so, it is him alone, not a "group of site members" or "Strzok and co".

Surprising to have only 2 backline players on the bench. Rassie's reasoning is that the games have 5 days apart, so he is partially resting the forwards by rotating them to make sure each plays for a shorter period.
Boks by 30 points.

Rassie is obligated to get the color number correct for all games.

That can be the only reason Mark's is not starting.

Bongo-Bongo is not in the same class as Mark's.

Sorry.

Italy played well last agem given the ireland and fiji upsets u wouldnt want to not roll out your A side...

MArx clearly being rested or AJ correct with yuor messed up quota stuff..? You would think will have big impact off the bench at scrum and general play if used in last 20-30mins.

Whatever form slupm you think he's in... from outside perspective imo still best hooker in world rugby...

The South African love affair with Lomp and Stephanie continues. Vermeulen will be fighting a lone battle for the ball, while Dud Toit and Lomp each try to hog the ball and hog the process tackles.

At least we wont see useless Mostert wasting 8 carries and gaining all of 1m for our cause. With Lood and PSDT packing 120kg + at least we will have some real physicality on board. The Italian pack is going to see its arse

The two locks when we lost to Italy by 20 points to 18 in 2016.....you guessed it fellas the 'physical' Dud Toit and the Lomp de Jager. The truth is even sillier than some of the fiction on this Board. Eraser has swopped the contribution every minute Mostert for Jerome Kaino's bunny.

Well Dave, let's hope the mighty Lood is more successful in his carries than in his last two outings against Italy in 2016 and 2017, where in total he managed to make 6m in 18 carries.
Also in 2017 against Italy the mighty Eben carried 7 times for 0 meters. So all this bashing of Mostert for 8/1 (and it wasn't 1m, look at minute 7:55 and tell me that's a 1m carry) is just so much petty bullshit.

From memory, didn't Mostert start both games in NZ where we were successful against the ABs? The draw and the win?

If only they'd allow him start in a real test match. Just so we can prove for once and for all that he's not actually test material.

Yes Plum, with a largely ignored best defensive contribution in the win in Wellington at 24 tackles missing 2 , while PSDT got most of the spotlight for making the same amount of tackles, missing 5.

Pakie, there are only a handful of posters that'll change their mind in the face of evidence.

Sad, but true.

People will be hush on Faf when he wins games for us but jump on him when he puts in an average performance. And then do the opposite when their favorites have similar fortunes.

Pointless arguing.

Pakie I don’t actually need stats to confirm my take on useless Mostert I threw them in for a take on his last match. His 1m was probably a reflection of his one positive carry less all the metres he was carried backwards at times Stats aside I know we can rely on Eben and Lood to make an impression with ball in hand unlike light weight Mostert who game after game proves just how unproductive he is where it counts for a lock

True Plum, but I guess having a bit of back and forth putting things to ponder on the table is what it's about, otherwise it will be pretty quiet here apart from the trolls and the multiple aliases slinging shit at everyone.

I wish Lood all the best despite not rating him that highly Dave, whatever is best for the Boks. We'll see how he goes, those burly Italians aren't the same kettle of fish as the Namibians.

Comey

But his open field tackling was hopeless in Wellington and then there the series of missed tackles in the WC match against New Zealand was an example of his real value in defense - just run through him reflects his real contribution.

In the flawed performances two tries were scored as result of Mostert missed routine tackles - you blamed Du Toit directly for the first one and by implication also for the second one.

Happy Idiot and Distortion Day to you,  LMAO

I don't see that as a problem, Plum. I support them both as well. Both have weaknesses, but you can't fault their commitment. What irks me is the clearly lopsided favoritism where Mostert can be criticized freely, but the moment you point out PSDT making an error people are on your back going "boohoo, stop being mean to Steph".

Lood has made, I think, 22 tackles in a test before. When there's a lot of traffic in the middle during phase play tight forwards can quickly rack up their tackle count. See 34 year old Wyn Jones making 25 tackles against Australia the other day.

Pakie

I think Lood would do well in Europe. SH conditions are too hard for flatfooted players of his size.

In slower conditions, his bit of skill and bulk would be handier.

In contrast, PSDT needs to slow down a bit. He's smart enough to make good contributions but his haste puts him off balance too often. He's at his best when he's only thinking one step ahead, not two.

On Eben, I've been happy that he's been improving for too long now. By that I mean, when is the fished, clear "best in the world" product going to arrive? Marx is still that now, and he's only entering his prime. Sure, he's out of form atm, but you get the picture.

RG's my guy but probably on the lighter side as compared to the above.

Lomp is a contributor when he is playing against the likes of the USA and Namibia ......and when his place in theteam is not assured. Logically, therefore, when he is playing against Namibia and his place is not assured......he is going to be a monster. This is is just like WC 2015 when he built his reputation against the USA and Scotland.....only to disappear against Wales where he ran 11 times for 7 metres, never beat a tackle and lost the ball twice! And never reappeared against NZ where he ran 3 times for 2 metres. That's 14 knockout runs Dave for 9 metres.....and no tackles beaten. And that's frigging physical! Lomp is as physical as the kid in Standard 5 beating up on the little guy withs specs in Std 3.

Liar Sipreme as per always.   Lood was critical to the 2015 WC Tight 5 since the miserable Matfield flop totally.  In any event we are used to usage of selected stats leaving out critical info - so lets look at the issue objectively and cut out the prejudiced BS.
