OK -  First of all WC matches distort the situation as weak teams are played   So the 2007 and 1999 records  were misleading.   No surprise  about 1997 - that is where Carel du Plessis was coach and he started teaching the players how to utilize backline players  - the only coach since 1992 to get that going.   The team was nicely coming along with bearing the BRI Lions and Wallabies by record margins when Mallett was appointed, He basically used the team put together to win 15 tests in a row in the EOYT ending in November against the POMS. 

That's true, world cup games can inflate the numbers as volume of games increase. To some extent there are easy games, not all of them. The 1999 team even had trouble breaking Spain down. 

I personally think Carel is overstated. The team was evolving. Mallett did a good job, until the game itself evolved when defences improved. Then he failed in implementing the fast rucking game of the Brumbies. 

pUsing Carel's team made it easy for Mallet.

Carel developed the team and Mallett merely kept it going until he had to start making changes when his .house of cards collapsed'   Had nothing to do with a change in style of play+

Carel was in charge for 8 tests. Won 3, lost 5. 6 of those tests were at home! Lost the Lions series. He was Bok coach for 2 months and 13 days. His Boks were out coached for the Lions test, he never targeted their fullback, who admitted he was afraid because he knew he'd fold if they did.

I think it's far fetched to say Mallett was a placeholder. I'm not necessarily a Mallett fan, but credit where it's due. Mallett's first order of business was to correct the centre pairing, move Honiball to 10, move Monty to fullback. No, he left his mark on the Boks.
