Riley Norton, the dynamo Junior Boks captain, has notched a spot in the Springboks' expansive 46-man lineup for the upcoming Nations Championship, featuring among six fresh faces yet to be capped at this level. The squad also heralds the return of key scrumhalves, setting the stage for an electrifying season.
At just 20, lock Norton made waves in the recent clash against the Barbarians in Gqeberha, securing his ticket for a Test debut in July. Joining him in the ranks of the uncapped are Carlü Sadie (prop), Ruben van Heerden (lock), Paul de Villiers (flank), Vusi Moyo (flyhalf), and Jaco Williams (wing).
The team's composition reflects a blend of experience and budding talent, with 12 players from the Vodacom Bulls, fresh from their URC final appearance. Among them is the prodigious scrumhalf Embrose Papier, who's making a comeback after last donning the national colors in 2018. Herschel Jantjies, another scrumhalf returning to the fold, last played for the Boks in 2023.
Other notable squad inclusions are Thomas du Toit, returning from Bath to the Sharks, and Quan Horn, the Lions fullback who recently shone as a flyhalf against the Barbarians. Cobus Reinach is also back in action after recovering from a knee injury.
"We are pleased with the quality of the group we have selected, and it's also exciting to see the next generation of players coming through in Riley, Vusi, Paul, Carlü, Ruben, and Jaco,"
remarked Rassie Erasmus."They are all familiar with the way the Springbok environment operates, the standards expected at this level, and they have shown that they are comfortable in the set-up, so we are excited for them to make this step up. Embrose and Herschel have also made a strong statement with their performances this season, and we are looking forward to welcoming them back in the squad."
The Boks are slated to kick off their Nations Championship campaign against England at Ellis Park on July 4, followed by confrontations with Scotland and Wales, before heading to Buenos Aires for a showdown against Los Pumas.
As the squad departs for Johannesburg to reconvene their training camp, anticipation is high. The inclusion of both seasoned players and promising newcomers promises a dynamic blend of strategy, skill, and enthusiasm, potentially heralding a new era for South African rugby.
