Wallabies prop Angus Bell has hailed the transformative impact of Springbok rugby on the global stage, asserting that their approach has set a new standard for the sport. After a season in the Vodacom URC, Bell returned to Australia with a deep respect for the South African style, which he believes has markedly influenced the modern rugby playbook, especially in scrum dynamics and strategic substitutions.
“Again, that’s why South African rugby has been so strong; they have sort of revolutionised the use of bench front-rowers and the scrum as like a real rock and foundation of where they build their game around their maul too,” Bell explained. The vaunted 'Bomb Squad' strategy initiated during Rassie Erasmus’s tenure epitomizes this shift, with several South African teams adopting a six-two bench split favoring forward power, which has proven formidable in recent competitions.
"It was a cool experience [playing the South Africans]; they’re obviously the tougher games."
Bell acknowledged that the clashes with South African squads were among the most challenging encounters during his time in the northern hemisphere, pushing him to adapt and strategize against some of the world’s best players.
“It’s always just shifting your mentality to get ready for those different challenges and different front-rowers and who they’re going to pick. It was definitely different,” he added, reflecting on the intensity and tactical nuance of these matchups.
Beyond the fierce competition, Bell’s stint overseas offered him exposure to diverse playing styles and conditions, enriching his experiences beyond the familiar confines of Super Rugby.
"It was just a really cool experience to be able to verse people that I wouldn’t have versed if I didn’t make that decision to go overseas."
“So it was definitely heaps of learnings in there,” he concluded, appreciating the broadened horizons that his international play provided. As the Wallabies gear up to rebound from a disappointing season, the insights and techniques gleaned from such high-level international exposure could be crucial in reshaping their strategies and fortifying their gameplay for future challenges.
