Another simplistic attempt at debate, replete with the usual silly insults. Let me explain. I accept this is a generationally great Bok team. Players like Marx, Etzebeth, Vermeulen, Pollard and Kolbe are legends. But others like Malherbe, Faf, Willie, Mostert and even Dud Toit were very effective in our WC finals.
And because Rasmus’ predecessors assembled them as a team when they were young, the team had time to get over the teething phase and gel.By WC 2023 these players had a mental edge and cohesion.
Now we get to the contradiction. If we have a generationally great team, better than all our rivals, why did we win the WC with 3 one point victories. You don’t win by one point three games in a row without an huge dollop of luck.
And why have we drawn with Ireland and struggled mightily to beat an unsettled NZ team at home.
There is only one logical conclusion if we have the best players….and that is that our tactics don’t allow for dominance, more for arm wrestles.
And that comes back to the coach who got gifted this team of greats. Clearly he has helped rebuild our forward strength and dominant defense. But he has failed over 7 years now to create an attacking model, relied on centers who are mainly defenders and been happy to win off the maul and Pollard’s boot.
And this hasn’t changed this year. Against strong opponents the scrum penalty and subsequent maul are still our most reliable source of tries. So some may think Rasmus is a genius, but simple logic says a brilliant coach with this cast of players would have shown clear superiority over our opponents. At best we have shown we are a Pollard boot better.
