PdV thinks so: . Former Bok coach Peter de Villiers says the DHL Stormers should not play Pieter-Steph du Toit as a loose forward. . Stormers captain Siya Kolisi was rested for last Saturday's match against the Crusaders in Christchurch, with Du Toit moved from lock to openside flank. . In his latest column for KweséSports, De Villiers explained why it wasn't a good idea. . 'You might say that Du Toit moving into the No 7 jersey will strengthen the lineout play. But, if you are sensible and weigh the amount of lineouts against loose-play situations and defence, then there is no way that you can make such a selection,' De Villiers wrote. . 'Du Toit is too slow to play at flank, especially against the New Zealand teams, who will explore that space that you are creating for them out wide. . 'I cannot help but feel sorry for such a talented rugby player, who is forced to play out of position where he lacks the abilities to cut down space. This allowed the backs of the Crusaders to create one-on-one situations, which led to overlaps out wide.'

Playing Du Toit at loosie is not a good idea - but loosie selection has all been up to maggots anyway.    The problem is that loosie selection in SA takes no cognition of pace - so we have no cover for any faster opposition loosies out wide.   This is further complicated by the slow loosies being also poor insofar as reading of the game is concerned and they have very little idea about breakdown ball protection and recovery.
Problem is that if a 100 meter run for Vermeulen, Louw and Alberts is organized Du Toit would beat Alberts by 30 meters, while beating Louw  and Vermeulen by 25 meters distance.   At least Du Toit is athletic - which none of the three mentioned loosies are.
Seems to me the Coaches has not learnt the basic fact that loosies are loosies and not an extension of the Tight 5.   The Stormers should pick up their loosie selection and get it right.   Carr was a one series wonder and is no up to standard anymore.
The problem for the Springboks can be solved easily,   The best loosie combination in the rugby championship would be Coetzee at 8, Labuschagne at 7 and Kriel at 6.   Against the slower NH teams the selection could be different.   I would still select Vemeulen at 8 - but after his neck injury and his holiday in France he as for his club not 10% of the player he used to be.   Also getting on in years and some players loose the plot faster than others.
In any event - the Stormers made a fool of themselves by letting Cloete go to the Kings.    He and Kriel are by some distance the best two open-side flanks in SA at present.

Just one small problem with that logic Vunipola is no faster than Alberts a few seasons back....and right now he is the biggest match winner at loose forward....as he showed last weekend when he reduced Stampkar to a nothing.

Pieter-Steph is plenty fast enough for blindside flank.
Surprised anyone is dumb enough to quote the fool Peter de Villiers of all people as a source. If Twakkie is endorsing your view then perhaps it's time for a rethink!
By the way, the Stompies have just announced their team for Friday . . . Pieter-Steph is named at flank again.
Schplott!

I cannot understand what Mozart is aiming at - on the one hand he quotes an piece  emanating from the slow-witted Snorre about Du Toit being too slow and on the other hand he seems to be defending the slowest and worst loosie we ever had in SA - Alberts.

PSDT is not a flanker. He is lock, end of story. There is a reason we never saw players like Bakkies and Matfield playing on the side of the scrum, because that was not their position. Them playing this poor kid out of position is ruining him as a player. Both his reputation and confidence take a knock with each failed attempt. In South Africa we keep on doing this. We play players out of position, and they pay the price. The list of talented players that have been down the jack of all trades path, and ultimately failed, is endless. Will the coaches ever learn???

They never judge the pace of a rugby  player over a 100m distance..... Especially not a forward.

Du Toit is an excellent lock but for the teams sake is playing 7. Fleckie needs some grunt at 7. He is no slowe r than some other Bok 7's

It depends on combinations. If the number 6 and number 8 were both fast, then bliPSDT could be solid at blindside.
He could exposed by 2 young's dummies, but that was also down to poor defence by the team as a whole, and of course the utterly useless coaching of Coetzee.

in this instance Snor is right...Stephanie's tackling stats are poor as it is....and he simply isn't agile enough for this role. Danie Rossouw was another big man who played loosie, but he could change direction easily enough.....not something that comes naturally to Stephanie.

Dofdoos - if you cannot see the real argument about slow loosies then you must be more idiotic than normal.

Rossouw was a good loosie - but was he not the won that was lying on the ground trying to take the legs of a opposing player in the line-out in the WC 2011 game and then got penalized for idiocy.   The penalty was converted and SA was out of the WC tournament.
Have not seen anything like that previously - so was he a real thinking player?

PSDT is stopping a gap on tour. He is the first choice 5 for the Stormers, but injury forced Flekkie to pick him at 7. It's not a disaster.

But Rossouw was also the player that took Cueto into touch to assure the 2007 WC final....so in that instance he was a very clear thinking player.

Sure - but that was in 2007,   By 2011 he was over the realized it and retired from test Rugby after the WC in 2011,
