Steyn's goal kicking was good - the rest of his performance was a mixed bag.

Lets look at the Stats:-

Steyn0/01715/10/103003226/40/000/0

He made some good distance in one run when he had no defendants to contend with and his pass was good.   He beat 3 defenders in attack through the channel and made 2 off loads - a plus for him

On the negative side -

*  he again hand over ball possession twice to the Rebels - which is a normal problem for him;

*   his defense was putrid with a missed tackle ratio of 40% - substantially higher than his average;

*   he still doe s not know when to pass and when to kick balls and his kicking game was down the field and gave the Rebels the opportunity to run at the Sharks,

*   at least two of his passes were poor and not up to standard.

With due regard to his penalty conversions and his contribution to the Pietersen try a mark of 5,5/10 is warranted.

I think Steyn did exceptionally well tonighy...Exceptionally well in proving just how valuable Lambie is. Some shit passing from the big man and I noticed a few missed tackles. The commentators made reference to his inability to move to his left or right quick enough as he is a very big man for a 10.
Look, I am not doing a 180 on Fransie as I think he is a valuable player to the Sharks but lets call a spade a spade..He was not great at 10 tonight when it came to getting the backs going. Very poor execution of some of his passes.
He will need to be much better next week! So will our 1 on 1 tackling!

Agree - but I think it is part of a speed deficiency problem.

Possibly time to give up on Fransie anyway. He is a bit on the slow side but more than that, I heard tonight he is off to line his pocket in Japan too. He will come back an even worse player than when he got back from France. He does not have age on his side after a 2 year stint in Japan anyway. That will make him 28/29.
JP also has lost it. He is battling to get back into the groove. Cant believe we let Whitehead go to. Our best attacking 12 off to EP .

I think the sharks, Boks & every other team in the world should drop fan steyn just so we don't have to read CleverMike rave against him anymore

It's never ending.

He carries on about Alberts like this all the time.

Facts are of no consequence.

Mallet rates Alberts highly and regards him as an absolute must for the Bokke.

Mike however will argue against this view. I guess he doesn't think much of Mallet's opinion.

Mike is of the opinion, that Mike's opinion is vastly superior to all ... including Mallet's.

The old "fuddy duddy" doesn't know his arse from his elbow at the best of times ... but don't tell him that or we'll hear a long winded version of why he knows exactly where his arse is.

Not sure I'm quite up for it ...

An article is on the home page about Fat Steyn leaving to Japan and go on a sushi diet .
He will however be available for the World Cup.
Given the world cup is so close, he should only be looking to sign a contract outside of SA after it.
Very inconsiderate on team preparations etc.

Steyn was at best solid today but is simply not a 10. Leave him at 12 where he belongs

Chicken, what game were you watching you fool - JP was damn good today - his best game since his return and also confirmed that he has lost none of his pace.

Chicken start watching the rugby not the adverts you dumb prick.

Mvovo was good as was Deysel

This item was on Francois Steyn - not Fat and Slow Willem Alberts.
Francois Steyn wants to do the ordinary by going to Japan.  He probably knows that he did not make the grade in performances this year in Super 15 - so he goes off to Japan and hope he will be selected on reputation - not performance - as part of the WC squad.
His pace is at best questionable and one wonders how slow he would be after a season in Japan.
And since you raised the issue of Fatso - he is still the same,  cluless as to what is expected from a loosie and really mixed up as a lock.  He cannot handle balls and specialize in possession gifts to the opposition.  Never yet hear of ball protection at tackle situations and ball recovery - is way beyond his very limited skills set.

The foi;;owing it the report on Francois Steyn's move to Japan:-

"According to a report, Springbok and Sharks centre Francois Steyn is set to miss 2014's Rugby Championship for a campaign in Japan's Top League.

Sport24 believe the 2007 World Cup winner will return to Super Rugby in 2015 and is available to the Springboks for this year's November Tests.

"Frans didn't want to engage in any negotiations without our consent and because of the unique circumstances we allowed it," South African Rugby Union CEO Jurie Roux told the website.

"We have the assurance that he'll be available for the World Cup."

Why does he wait - he should depart for Japan immediately - was not up to standard for the Sharks in any event.

I thought Steyn did okay today, considering its only his 3rd game. I don't read much into fantasy stats. They only tell half the story. If you really want proper stats you need to look at the stats the coaches use and this mainly to do with off the ball and the players movement which the TV and Fan stats don't tell.
I did a sky sports app using opta data to show fans where the player touched the ball on the field and what part of the field do they cover most.
Unfortunately we are still lagging behind in rugby terms in getting those stats over to the fans.
From a fan point of view, I think Frans just need to work on his passing, the better flyhalves carry the ball up to the gain line where by the distribution comes into play. Frans is use to bashing it up and then offloading where as a flyhalf he needs to be able to vary his play, take the ball flat to draw the defenders.
At the end of the day, the sharks won even though the ref was bent. Allowing the sharks a try in the first 2 min when it should have been a penalty try and a yellow card for the player. Not to mention a number of skew line out throws, bad ruck calls and players come off the side of the scrum when they were going backwards.

It is not fantasy stats - those stats quoted are from ESPN.   Look I do not think that Steyn's passing game is up to standard - even when playing at center.   There is a myth that he off-loads balls in tackle situations - but they are as rare as hard to find in practice as it is to find a needle in the hay stack.  He normally crashballs.
I gave Steyn a pas mark for his performance today at 5,5/10.  Saffex is right - Steyn is not and never will be a proper flyhalf.   He does not read the game well and cannot determine when to carry the ball, when to pass  and when to kick balls.  In an effort to avoid charge downs he stands too deep in the pcoket 0 maqking the passing ham,e ineffective and is consequently obliged to kick balls too often,  That makes him too predictable and easily dealt with by the opposition.  His kicks are normally ill-placed and not strategic.
I do not think that Steyn is the answer at 10 - he is just too slow and predictable and the Aussie commentators were correct when they  referred to his inability to move to his left or right quick enough as he is a very big man for a 10.

The usual nonsense. I have not seen the game yet, but I'll give you a more honest viewpoint after. As for listening to the Aussie commentators....they don't have our interests at heart and mostly I turn down the whining biggots. I do note, however, the Sharks won....isn't that the object of the exercise?

Before you start your nonsemce watch the game and be honest in your assessment for a change.
The object of the exercise was to win convincingly against the bottom of the Aussie Conference side and there was nothing convincing about this win.   The Sharks cannot play this kind of rugby against the much stronger teams they will meet in the next three weeks and expect to win anything.
Steyn did NOT meet requirements as a fyhalf and that is unfortunately factual.  The Aussie commentators were correct - his missed tackles were due to the deficiency they mentioned.

Dave, thanks for your kind words. I mean, I must have been so wrong in my take on JP as you say so and I mean, with your incredibly high standards in what it takes to be an international back, I feel so silly. I mean, you do think Serfontein, JJ and Jantjies should be Boks and are better than guys like JDV and Habana right now so please do excuse me if I think you are a dumb fuck. I mean that sincerely.
No Dave, that may have been JP's best this year, but it was by no means the JP of old or good enough. Not even close Dave.
When I think of what it takes, I think of Cory Jane, Bryan Habana, Willie Le Roux, Julian Savea, Andrew Taylor, Ben Smith, Visinia, Piutau...Players that pop up everywhere in the backs and constantly threaten defences. JP is plugged on the wing and he does what he has to and little more. His pace is not in question. He is not explosive like some of the guys mentioned above but when he gets to full flight, he can hold his own.
Dave, spare me any further lectures on backline play and who is in form. Your two "Bok" picks in Serfontein and JJ is, as you like to say, at best LAUGHABLE!
Haha, Dave trying to tell me what it takes..Haha thats a fucken joke!
