The only way a centre penetrates at 12 these days is through power. There is no space, so the ability to bludgeon ahead, stand in the tackle and offload to runners running off you is what you need. Roberts and Nonu exemplify this....they can break tackles and offload in traffic.

Jean has never really been able to do this.  He is simply not a powerhouse. From time to time he gets a bit of space and is lethal, as he was against OZ at the RWC.....but you can't count on space.

Fransie by contrast is a powerhouse. I don't think, as some do, that he is quick. Nor do I think he is as agile defensively as Jean......but he can put in a monster hit. To my mind he is suited to the butcher shop that is modern 12 rugby.

Jean, who still has the gas, is going to be much more dangerous at 13. And will not be worn down by the constant battering defensively at 12.

This will be the best combination we have had in some time....with youngsters like Engelbrecht  and Jordaan looking like future possibilities.

Frans walks it at 12, with Taute the real option at 13. Jordaan looks a good prospect and JJ is another to watch as is the Bok U20 Pat Howard.

My Bok centres against England would be Frans at 12 and Taute at 13

Why Dave, because you think Jean is slowing down. But oops he is 3 metres faster than sprinter Willie Le Roux......care to reconsider? I mean when your basic premise is blown right out of the water, it's time to change your mind. Painful but therapeutic.

Jean is about as fast as he has always been. I just want to put it, Willie is not known for his pace, rather his incisive running, so not really the best person to measure pure pace against, however is is younger that jean and no slowcoach. So probably a good measure to argue that jean has not lost pce, but no argument to state that Jean is a speadfreak.

Nope Jean is not quick, never has been and is not going to start speeding up aged 31.

I saw that Willie incident and Willie definately slows down - besides who said Willie was quick, he is after all a flyhalf

Moz the issue with Jean is that he is past it, is a 12 and has done nothing of merit this season. You get the picture. Bok rugby needs to move on, why on earth would you want to a play a 31 year old out of position and having done nothing all season to merit this Bok selection - is this what you call progression?

If only Jaques Fourie was still available. Steyn at 12 and Jaque at 13, that is a potent midfield.

Nope I want to see Bok rugby move on. Fourie was good, but I believe a player like Taute could be even better. Similar kind of players, but Taute has a higher work rate and probably more attacking clout than Fourie

You mean the Fury that got this rating at RWC QF:

Jaque Fourie: Unable to break through the Wallabies’ defence, either through his own running or his distribution to the back three. An ineffective display. 6

One of the great things this year is not having to deal with a centre who only tackles when the man is static, only beats forwards and can't pass.

Could the center future be Frans and Jordaan. Jordaan has huge gas - quickes tin SA? . 94 kg and growing. It very early days but I like very much what I am seeing. Another brilliant Greys College Bloem player poached by sharks.

The Cheetahs do not play slouches on the wing. Willie is quick be sure of that. Jean over a distance is as quick if not quicker by those 3 meters. Certainly quick enough to play 13 where he has always belonged in my view. Stupid to play him at 12. He and Frans will do well.
