The only way a centre penetrates at 12 these days is through power. There is no space, so the ability to bludgeon ahead, stand in the tackle and offload to runners running off you is what you need. Roberts and Nonu exemplify this....they can break tackles and offload in traffic.
Jean has never really been able to do this. He is simply not a powerhouse. From time to time he gets a bit of space and is lethal, as he was against OZ at the RWC.....but you can't count on space.
Fransie by contrast is a powerhouse. I don't think, as some do, that he is quick. Nor do I think he is as agile defensively as Jean......but he can put in a monster hit. To my mind he is suited to the butcher shop that is modern 12 rugby.
Jean, who still has the gas, is going to be much more dangerous at 13. And will not be worn down by the constant battering defensively at 12.
This will be the best combination we have had in some time....with youngsters like Engelbrecht and Jordaan looking like future possibilities.
