To paraphrase Neil Armstrong: "One small step for Frans Steyn, one giant leap for the South African Rugby Union."

Yes, we took a giant leap towards the truth that lies behind the reasons for Frans Steyn's abrupt and kenspeckle departure from the Springbok team this week.

On Tuesday SARU revealed that Steyn was released from the Bok squad "at his own request".

That sparked a media frenzy, with wide-ranging reports and opinions - some close to the bone and other articles being somewhat economical with the truth.

However, the reports caused more than just the proverbial 'flutter' at SARU headquarters.

It forced a very brutal bit of honesty out of the national controlling body.

While SARU denied reports that it had reneged on a contractual promise made to Steyn, which led to his walk-out from the Bok camp in Durban this week, SARU Chief Executive Jurie Roux admitted money is at the heart of the matter.

That reality was contained in an opinion piece done by rugby365 earlier this week.

"I can confirm that there was a dispute over mechanisms by which one element of Frans' Springbok remuneration was to be paid," Roux said in a very carefully-worded statement on Thursday.

Roux continued tiptoeing his way through the minefield that Steyn-gate has become, speaking about some "minor details" that remain to be sorted out.

And while the SARU boss feels they are not of such a scale as to be a cause for a major upheaval, it still leaves several other questions unanswered.

Given that Steyn was, in August last year, listed among Springboks who were awarded "long-term national contracts" - which will supposedly see them remain in South Africa until the end of 2015 - I would like to pose a fewquestions to SARU:
1. Does there exist a written contract between Frans Steyn and SARU, and if so, is either side in breach of this contract at present?
2. Were there indeed any (verbal or written) undertakings made to Frans Steyn by any member of the SARU or the Bok team management when he was lured back from France in 2012? (Steyn's father, Piet, was quoted in media reports claiming that SARU reneged on promises. SARU, of course deny this. My information suggests the former is closer to the truth than the latter)
3. What is the situation with Steyn's image rights, being held by a third party in France? Is payments (or SARU's failure to honour them) perhaps at the heart of (or part of) the breakdown in trust ?
4. Is there a dispute over which Tests Steyn will/can play before and after he heads to Japan in August?

Given that SARU stated on Thursday they have an agreement with players in respect of the rights of both employer and employee not to publicly discuss any contractual situation, I don't expect any answers soon.

However, it we keep asking questions, then maybe we can force SARU to take another giant leap and let us deeper into the sanctum sanctorum of South African rugby before the sorry saga derails the Springbok campaign entirely.

Given Bok coach Heyneke Meyer's public support for Steyn, and the backing he has of his teammates, this off-the-field sideshow certainly has the potential to inhibit their performances.

For the record, here are the SARU statements on Steyn-gate - in full:

Part One:

Tuesday, June 10, 2014

Frans Steyn released from Springbok camp

Frans Steyn was released from the Springbok squad at his own request on Tuesday and will not appear in Saturday's match against Wales at Kings Park, Durban.

The player advised SARU officials that he did not wish to be considered for the June Tests.

"The environment in the Springbok squad is fantastic and I would like to state categorically that my relationship with Heyneke Meyer, the rest of the management and my team-mates is very good," said Steyn.

Steyn - who is expected to take up a contract in Japan at the end of Super Rugby Series - said that he wished for time to reflect on his Springbok future. He indicated he would be available for the Sharks once the June internationals are completed.

"I have spoken at length to Frans and we are happy to accede to his request," said Jurie Roux, CEO of the South African Rugby Union (SARU).

"He has asked for some time to consider his international playing future and we must respect that. Let me make it clear that he has not retired from international rugby, but he has requested a break from it."

Roux added that Steyn had asked for privacy at this time.

"This is not an ideal situation, but, in other instances, sudden player absences through injury are not uncommon and I'm sure Heyneke and the selectors will adapt to his unavailability. Frans is now out of the squad and team management will respect his wish for privacy by not speculating on his decision or his likely return."

Statement from SARU on Frans Steyn's withdrawal from the Springbok squad

Jurie Roux, CEO of the South African Rugby Union, said: "In light of media coverage following Frans' request to leave the Springbok squad, we have been placed in a very difficult position.

"We have an agreement with players in respect of the rights of both employer and employee not to publicly discuss any contractual situation and I will not breach that. However, allegations have been made that affect the reputation of the South African Rugby Union and Frans Steyn as an employee and person and they cannot go unchallenged.

"It is alleged that SARU breached a promise to Frans in terms of his contract. I can confirm that there was a dispute over mechanisms by which one element of Frans' Springbok remuneration was to be paid. That issue was addressed. Some minor details remain to be sorted out, but they are not of such a scale as to be a cause for a major upheaval.

"Out of respect for Frans' wishes, whatever other considerations may have been on his mind are not for me to discuss.

"I look forward to his return to playing in the near future in Super Rugby as he has been a good servant to the Springboks and his franchise"

Crap. He read all Mikeys postings on this site in one night and decided to give up rugby all together. He is now in counselling for depression.

It's enough of an issue to make him pull out. I suspect SARFU have fouled up and are not giving Frans what is rightfully his. Well done Frans for standing up for your rights if this is indeed the case.
I trust Bobbok and rugganutter would have the gumption to do the same in their own life.
Frans is having a nice break, will be back at the Sharks thereafter and then heads off to Japan for a fantastic life adventure and a very lucrative contract. I am sure he is bawling his eyes out. Although knee problems are effecting his performance and he is NOT the player he once was Meyer still thinks he is key so its up to SARFU to sort their mistakes out.

New details have emerged about the reason why Frans Steyn walked out on the Boks, with a reported dispute over image rights being the final straw.

Steyn withdrew from South Africa's squad on Tuesday ahead of June games against Wales and Scotland, and according to Timeslive, it was after several Saru officials had arrived at the team hotel in Durban. The website continues by saying the centre departed "in an agitated state".

The shock news has left Springbok head coach Heyneke Meyer having to call in Jan Serfontein to an already depleted midfield, next to JP Pietersen.

Steyn meanwhile has departed, with the website explaining that he'd "been at loggerheads over the handling of image rights" for quite some time.

"His image rights have been owned by a third party since he joined French club Racing Metro in 2009 - a standard practice for high- profile sports stars," they reported.

"When Steyn returned to South Africa in 2012 he was awarded a Springbok contract with a specific understanding that the use of his image rights would take place under licence from the third party. Payments were to be made separately and directly to the party by Saru, but that was not honoured."

So what think Bobb ok and rugganutter now?

 Some moreinfo:

Steyn, 27, shocked the rugby fraternity on Tuesday when he pulled of out the Boks' Incoming Series matches this month.

It is believed that Steyn left after a dispute over money with the South African Rugby Union (SARU).

His dad, Piet Steyn, confirmed that a broken monetary promise from SARU was one of the reasons his son left the squad.

However, Steyn snr made it clear that money was not the only reason behind his son's decision to pull out. He said there were "other issues" that cannot be disclosed.

And White, Steyn's provincial coach at the Sharks, believes a lack of respect may have been a contributing factor.

"Maybe it's a case of Frans still being viewed as a 19-year-old and not the 27-year-old man he is. He has a child of his own," White told the Beeld website.

White feels Steyn is not in the right space mentally and therefore wants to take time to reconsider his international future.

White continued by saying that there was never a problem with Steyn at the Sharks where he was very comfortable.

White said he told Steyn to inform him if he wanted to rest, but that the player was happy to play in every game.

"I'm someone who knows how to get the best out of him," continued White, who was the Springbok coach when Steyn made his international debut as a 19-year in 2006.

Steyn will finish the Super Rugby season with the Sharks before heading to Japan. It remains unclear when he will again be available to represent the Springboks.

Oaks please understand there were ISSUES and they were not only monetary.

Jawellnofine, but can't he continue playing while the money 'issues' are worked out by the men in suits , or is the potential loss of X number of $ so stressful that he's unable to kick a ball . Where's the passion for the jumper ?

SA rugby remains in turmoil. I'm really upset about that bit of news as I think Frans Steyn is a humble bloke who has been  derided on this and other sites unmercilessly!I'm amazed he has hung around this long to be frank and fully agree with his sudden departure. Go well Frans!

Respect is the issue here and money is just a symptom. In any case the pitiful amounts these rugby guys are getting versus other sportsmen is shameful. Less than a million bucks for one of the world's best rugby players in his prime....middle managers make more than that. And like Frans or not, he is one of the world's recognized players and a fas cinating guy to watch.

My guess is there is a vast feeding trough here with money being siphoned off to all sorts of hangers on. The market is going to force higher salaries and we are already seeing that with the departure of top players to Europe and Japan. A poorly paid, long and physically demanding S15 season is not a prescription for success. The house of cards is beginning to crumble.

Which f thje Springboks get less than R1 000 000 a year?  Where do you get that bload of crap from?   Willie le Roux signed up with the Cheetahs for two years with a contract price of R4 000 000.  Besides that he gets paid extra by SARU - so the total looks more like near to R3 000 000 a year than what you are spouting.
Vesides that they get paid image money - they amount of which really is unknown.   Fransie wants a double image payment - one by SARU and one by the Sharks.  Sound weird to me.   But both sides played down the issue - so that was only a minor issue apparently.
However, according to the various remarks made by Steyn's father and by White there are two other issues.   The one is about "respect" and the other not named.   Lets look at the first issue "Respect"   Respect is earned by performance - of which there was very little this year.   However, Steyn was molly-coddled by White.  He did not train on Mondays and Tuesdays with the Sharks team because of his knee.   problem.    In view of his iffy performance last Saturday - it is likely that Meyer insisted he should do the full training programme and not be given time off on Monday and Tuesday - as he is used to have.  Why did he walk out on the squad on Tuesday evening
The third issue is about his performances - last year he was fat and unfit and Plumtree was crucified because he insisted on Steyn coming down in weight and fitness and when that did not happen - he put him on the bench.   Steyn started off looking much slimmer this year - but over the last two months he was picking up weight again.  In the games he played for the Sharks he looked good for 10 minutes and then went into decline.   After halftim even his goal kicking became ineffective and inaccurate.    I think Meyer realized that something is needed to get Steyn matchfit and told him to get back to an acceptable standard of fitness.
Be it as it may - Fransie threw his toys out of the cot - probably because he was treated similar to other players and not put on a pedestal.
The more I look at this issue - the more I think he was childish and wanted to throw his weight around - like he tried to do with Plumtree - and he was told that he is in a team and not on a special "Francois Steyn" assignment.

does anyone have detauls on these image thrid party rights in france???
cos im wondering how long do they have rights to his image.

IMO what frans old man saying there were other reasons for frannie leaving is a load of BS. its about the money which owed and nothing more. daddy dteyn is just doing what any good father would do and not make his son look like gold digger.

his head wasnt in the right space??? too right, cos he was Fd off at losing all that bling.

i would be v ery surprised if he ever plays for the Boks again, then again meyer and SARU would bring back just about anyone.

If their was a contract/agreement in place and SARU have not honored this, then they are in the wrong. It does not matter if he is paid by the Sharks for image rights, or not- if SARU agreed this they should be paying what is owed.
Surely a bonus for the Boardrooom and their henchmen that was meant to be payed to Frans Steyn.
