This thing with Frans  is strange. Something must have bothered him. Maybe he was hoping for the flyhalf berth.
I hope it's not Steppie against Roberts.

This is a major surprise, It seems he is more interested in adding a SuperXV title to his CV. 
Although why do this now, instead of before the tests. It seems that something must have happened. He was probably never going to start if Jean was available, and Delande was then also looking like an option at 12. 
It looks like Serfontein will be getting his chance to start, who else is left?
Maybe they are not taking well to Frans only being able to train from Wednesday to Friday due to his knee. Although he is not kicking, so what is the problem.


This will give him a good rest on his gumpy knee to be back at centre for the Sharks, with Lambie back at 10 after the June internationals.
It is a disaster losing that game to the Stormers as the Sharks could have been pretty much assured of a home semi- and home final.
Now the Waratahs are looking like the team to beat. Crusaders could also slip into 2nd position, but a good chance of a final in Sydney between the Sharks and the Waratahs.
Although the New Zealand conference has been good this year, none of them are really looking like championship material. 
The Sharks are the only international team that could beat them at home- the Brumbies could possibly also beat them in Sydney.

JDV on crutches at the game Saturday was not a good sign.

 Given his knee issues, we may not see Frans in a Bok jersey again. HM must be pissed and he seems to be a fellow who values loyalty, so that also suggests this may be the end of the road for a great talent.
We wasted this guy, he was the ideal modern flyhalf. But a few charged kicks and claims of selfishness tanked that idea. If he had been kept at 10 and retained in RSA he was a potent match winner. So SA rugby has some pondering to do.
But so does Frans. What a bizarre way to exit the scene....clearly putting self ahead of the team. One can speculate on the reasons, but unless he is injured or has a family emergency, they won't wash. He will bitterly regret this silly move later in life.

Good riddance. i just wish the fat self-absorbed glory-boy would walk out on the Sharks as well!

oimatey, yes Lambie is ready after the June tests. His injury has responded well to treatment and he is ahead of schedule. It was announced back around April time that he would be available, and also reports since have confirmed this.

The following is the probable  reasons for his sudden departure:-  
*   Steyn realized he is required by Meyer to train together with the squad at all training exercises and he is not molly-coddled like White was prepared to do with him (the most likely reason); 
*   Steyn found out that he is not producing the goods anymore and that he is finished as a Srpingbok, since there are stronger candidates than him around and Meyer told him that he is an interim selection at best; and/or
*   Meyer is aware that his performance at center was way below par in Super 15 and in the game on Saturday he was invisible and he told him to buck up, which he did not like at all and he  threw his toys out of the cot.

The truth will come out at some stage or another and there would be clarity on his reasons for leaving.   I think that he was a very food player in the past - but at a relatively young age he lost the plot.   He was very poor in the tests he played in after his return from France and after his long injury break - he was useless last year - overweight,  slow and unfit.    This year he apparently lost some weight, but never regained his speed and his center performances for the Sharks were a nightmare as confirmed by his statistics,   Sad to see a player with declining performances and wish him well for the future - but doubt whether he would ever be in any Springbok squad in future.        
However, we have an inside center problem and Steyn was not helping with that.  I think the immediate answer of Meyer would be to pick Serfontein - always this year a better performer than Steyn was at center in any event.  
The center situation is thin and Useles de Jongh cannot play at center - 12 or 13 - and I think that Meyer would have to call up another player, especially in view of the number of injures and the thinness in the center position.   .  
Another failed dream of Mozart goes out of the window.  Mozart's ideas about him playing at flyhalf or center was piss poor in any event.  

So the Springboks are stressed by his departure, even though his performance was poor and he was going to be dropped. So Mike there is a street named after you.....what is it....Donkey Drive?

You never wanted to admit that his stats at center was piss poor - and now you still are stressed?  What a fool.    

Well this was said by the "pathetic fool" who coached the Bok defence. Does it sound to you like he wasn't expecting to have Frans at centre on Saturday? No....don't bother to answer the question, who needs any more lies.

Cape Town - Springbok defence coach John McFarland says the centre combination of Frans Steyn and JP Pietersen worked well against the World XV and he's confident they will also pass the test against Wales in Durban on Saturday (17:05 kick-off).

Pietersen, who normally plays wing, was added to the midfield to partner Steyn.

I worked very well - despite an absolute lack in attacking play and some  missed tackles as well.   Obviously Meyer had to use all measures to justify a seriously defective center pairing selected by him and the defense coach will support Meyer in any event.  
So that proved NOTHING and that is a fact.   So who will miss Steyn?  No answer bar the toadying by one of Meyer's assistants.      

You miss the point again. You claimed the Bok coaches were unhappy with Frans and ready to dump him. You contested the fact the Boks were stressed by his departure. Rightly or wrongly, as the article makes clear, the Boks were counting on Frans against Wales. So you were wrong....again.

You mean just like HM's other assistant, Alan Solomons, also supported him?

 I was shocked and dismayed to read about Frans Steyn.
Not sure what the reasons are but I trust that it is not a career ending issue.

I fear that perhaps his knees are giving in and thus the move, hope I am wrong.
clevermike please move on and hope and trust that Frans will be back.

As per normal you missed the point completely.  Steyn was the poorest performing 12 in any Super 15 SA team - fact.   He was the only 12 to never make a line break, the only 12 who never scored a try, the player who lost more ball possession than any other 12  and he had the worst defensive record of any player at 12. Those are factual points.  All the above are also supported by an evaluation of his stats.
On Saturday he was invisible - that is also a fact.   White did not require from Steyn to train with the team on Mondays and Tuesdays and that together with his speed deficiency could account for his questionable contribution for the Sharks.   It is indeed doubtful whether Meyer would allow for the same leniency.   He would be required to train - putting pressure on his knee problem - especially in view of his invisibility on Saturday. 
Steyn might not want to do further damage  his knee by participating in the full training program and then playing in tests - which would affect his lucrative Japanese  contract and decided that it would hurt him financially if the latter contract is jeopardized.   The questionable thing is - how would his present contract with SARU be effected by his latest decision - remember he is on contract with SARU, not with the Sharks.
Be it as it may - his knee problem cannot be treated medically and that means that it has a negative impact which means that he probably cannot re-produces his full performance record of the past.  No national team can afford to play a player with a permanent injury deficiency - so since he himself would not want to participate in both the full training program and then playing in subsequent tests probably was the reason for his latest decision.
That is also why I think Steyn would not return to play for the Springboks and the time to move on and find a permanent solution to the center issue.   Hopefully De Villiers will be back soon and the same with De Allende.   The return of De Allende could also sort out our problem at 13.   We are thin in that position as well.   I do not think the slow Fourie is the answer.  He  has been in opposition to Davies - who ran past him as if he was not there in the Wales test and produced nothing bar sound defense in the other two tests.   Like Pietersen,  Engelbrecht is a wing whose usage at center would not be sustainable.   De Jongh is a hopeless quota case - so other than De Allende there is nobody else on the radar for test selection. since Meyer apparently does not see a future in players like Jordaan and Sadie.  The back up for De Villiers is Serfontein - the back up for the 13 position is not evident at present.    
                             

He must have got fed up with reading Mikes comments and relentless campaign against him.

Fats Fransie probably knew he wasn't good enough for international rugby and decided to stop embarrassing himself and his country and call it a day. 

He did the right thing.

I am delighted to see the back of this chump.

Meyer is determined not to play Serfontein. Not sure why he's even in the squad. I wonder which Bulls pensioner will he target to make a comeback.

Looks as if Fats Fransie is trying to black mail the governing body for more money.

I can quite confidently say that Fats will never don the Bok jersey again and rightly so.

 Fat Fransie tried to make out he is irreplaceable and tried to force SARU to pay him more after two dismal years in performances for the Springboks and for the Sharks - and that is the reason for his departure - while on a SARU contract.
The money grabbing non-performer can kiss his Springbok future good-bye and that is a fact.  His present contract with SARU will not be renewed after this episode and he will find it hard to get another contract in SA other than with perhaps the Sharks.
He will similar to other Japanese club players come back slow and very poor and is another Peter Grant in the making.   Grant did not get fat though - only slow and ponderous.  FATSO will be fatter, slower than he already is  and ponderous with a dodgy knee as well.   Will not play for the Springboks again.
In a way I am sorry about that - another player whom one can stop plaguing the rugby geriatric-minded  Mozart about.
