It looks to me like this side has missed it's boat as far as Super rugby ambitions are concerned. No ideas, just plain stodgy. That Hurricanes outfit looks very good to me, even though they were walked backwards by the Shark pack. You'd have to say the odds are with them to make it zero from two. And it doesn't get any easier after that! Away to the Crusaders, Chiefs, Brumbies and Reds. Coetzee has it all to do.

 Alistair was the Bok backline coach!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That says it all re quota appointments.
Hurricanes maybe in for a surpirse but I cant think ou Allistair has the nous even to pick the right team.

I'm not so sure that Coetzee had much to do with that bok backline. They were running Brumbies plays that Jake liked - he was very influenced by Eddie Jones' Brumbies. I think the Bok attack stalled once the centre pair changed. But as head coach, I have to agree, not much from anyone really. Perhaps Peter De Villiers is available, he loved picking Stormers players, lol.

I hope I'm wrong - I never enjoy backing foreign teams over South Africans - but I think the Canes will take this game. Not a try fest, but comfortably.

Peter de Villiers' Varsity team lost recently, if I'm not mistaken.

Well, at least De Villiers had a sense of humour (often unintentionally funny). I am sure all kiwis would like him back as head coach in a S15 team but the dream is to have him back coaching the boks

 He should be coach of a team in a TV series. There used to be one like that in the UK Dream Team I believe it was. I think Peter would be a legend.

Agreed Saffex, no growth for four years now.

The only thing Coetzee is a master at, is marginalising talented players, forcing them to seek greener pastures elsewhere........centre Pat Howard will be the next to go.........the list of youngsters is endless........Quinn Roux, Nick Koster, Kitshoff (flanker) , JJ Engelbrecht, JP du Plessis, Gerhard v/d Heever, Tim Swiel, Dom Armand, Duvenhage etc

He is not the only former RWC squad coach who is coaching a varsity side.

Tight at the top in Varsity Cup
John Mitchell's UKZN side are coming off a morale-boosting win over Peter de Villiers’ FNB UWC last week and they face the FNB TUT Vikings in Pietermaritzburg. The Vikings suffered their first defeat against CUT last week, so they will be keen to bounce back and put some more distance between themselves and the Impi on the log.

You missed the point completely.  Venter has a medical practice in the Str and and is certainly available to get the Stormers out of the  rut they are in.

john mitchell is being wasted coaching at that level, would love for him to come to the hurricanes, hell i would take PDV over hammet.
he gave up coaching the sale sharks Iithink it was them) to coach at that level, muppet is the first thing to pop into my head.

if their was a reality show, then i would love for PDV the funniest coach to be on one team, and mitchell to be on the other.
mitchell has quite a history with his charges, both the force and lions turned into bullied little girls saying that mitchells approach was to harsh. a coup detat of sorts was the result in both his tenures at the force and lions.

@suntzu,
stormers could be just suffering a case of the first round blues where cobwebs are still very much in the system. mix that with bizzaro midas touch where everything they touched turned to poo, and u have urself the perfect storm, (wooohoo, fit that in perfectly, :oP)
ive never seen any team show so much nothing when attacking an oppositions line.
years of putting all attacking nous on the shelves has seen what little it had go off.

as kak as coetzee is, there was still plenty of class in that stormers team, that they should have been able to do something.
coetzee is not bad enough to negate the talent that is there, aplon, JDV, de allende, caterkilis, malherbe, kitshoff, elsdat, vermeulen.
this is why IMO the rnd one blues was one of two of the main contributors to their loss to the lions.

the other was the lions were just the better team.
to get a try early on, followed be a relentless barrage of drop goals, topped up with a 100% penalty and conversion success rate at almost regular intervals.
i doubt any team could come back from that, let alone the worst attacking team for the last 3 years playing thier first spXV game of the season.

Coetzee made a number of critical errors  in team selection.  He should have

*  used De Allende and De Villiers as the center pairing;

*  used Ruan Botha as a lock;

*  select Rhodes at 7.

to name just 3.

Burger is not Super 15 material anymore - sad to say.   He was very poor on Saturday.   Both Kolisi and Carriza shared the prize of the worst Stormer forwards on Saturday - with Burger a short head behind.  At best Coetzee should have played Burger off the bench to see whether he still belongs = he obviously does not  - and it proves once more the futility of rep utation selection.

 The Stormers have three problems:
1. No manager/coach.2. No Captain.3. No flare.

Lots of bleating. All that happened was the Stormers were rusty and couldn't turn a massive possession advantage into points and  Boshoff had a career day with the boot. There are clearly a few selection issues that will be resolved. Get over it...as for your comments AJ, they are unbelievably stupid. I had you down for somebody a bit more balanced.

Although it is hard to believe - I tend to agree with you.   I wrote elsewhere that I believe that the Stormers will beat the Hurricanes this weekend.  Rustiness was part of the problem - the second one is dealing with some selection scenarios.

However, I do believe that Coetzee has become somewhat stale in I thinking and it may be wise to draw Venter in in some capacity or another to bring in some new blood in the Stormers set-up.   He is a local and can be brought in quite easily but I do not think he would become involved without some authority in team selection and player development.

 AJ I give you 2 out of three. Nothing wrong with the captain.
The point is this. Allistair showed nothing as the Bok backline coach. I can only think Jake selected him for quota reasons. Its all quota rubbish from begining to end.
The Stormers attack has been the worst in the competition for years now. Allistair is to blame. Who else?
We do keep losing players at a remarkable rate. We overlook players. Wille le Roux is from the Boland! Boland beat the Stormers.
It is nothing short of a disgrace how badly the WP union is run. The results are appaling in relation to the fan base and club strength.
That Venter is not the coach or a Mallet or Rassie is beyond words. Frankly the best thing would be for the Stormers to finish last and we bring in a real rugby man like Venter etc Allistair has had amazing talent at his disposal and has played one dimensional rugby. Something has to change. Gettin g in some brain power is the biggest need.

Agreed Beans. Although, how the bulls have managed to get as crap as they are with the massive budgets they have and the assets at their disposal is also mind boggling. Yes they lost a lot of players but they should easily have been able to replace them considering the resources they have available.
It points to one thing and that is poor management.
