Elton Jantjies: In the wrong place?

Former All Black playmaker Carlos Spencer believes that Elton Jantjies' poor showing in this year's Super Rugby season is the result of the Stormers' conservative approach.

Jantjies has endured a rough season after securing a highly-anticipated loan move from the Lions. The Stormers have struggled as a team too, with the Cape outfit 11th on the overall table.

While Jantjies has come in for heavy criticism, Spencer feels that it's the team tactics that are to blame for the number ten's failures.

"Elton is a flair-player who plays with confidence. He's an exciting young player, but the Stormers' game-plan doesn't suit him," Spencer told Die Burger.

"The Stormers focus on defence and not attack. Elton wants to express himself and you have to give someone like that freedom to take charge.

"I would definitely say the Stormers aren't the right team for him."

Spencer, who coached Jantjies while working with John Mitchell at the Lions, feels that the Stormers could make better use of both the fly-half and the rest of their back division.

"Elton likes to attack the gain line and if he's not allowed to do that, and doesn't get players that run into space next to him, then he'll struggle," he added.

"The Stormers do have quality outside backs, but don't know how to use them."

Spencer is right n every respect.   First of all the Stormers  are clueless about seletions and secondly they are clueless about how to play attacking rugby.   For many years the then WP was known for the SA team that really gad the flair and ability to attack with its backline - nowadays an attack is rare and there are numerous handling errors alway in evidence - in other words they lost the plot completely.

Obviously Spencer knows Jangkies and his abilities better than most and could get better performances out of him.   At present he is not helping much insofar as the Stormers are concerned - so it is certain that with proper coachinngbut above all with a better game plan - Jantjies should have the potential to imrove.   He can certainly only improve - because he really is at the bottom of the pile - can only go up and not further doen

Jantjies was by some distance our best 10 last weekend. But I agree with Carlos, the Stormers play boring conservative rugby and its not the place for Jantjies

Oh puleeze. Jantjies has been allowed to do his chip kicks, his cross kicks, the loosies have run onto his flip passes. I suspect if you look at the passing stats and the runs made, they will compare well to his Lions stats.

The fact is Elton bombed in his first game. Having been selected in part for his kicking, he couldn't hit a barn door from point blank. That and perhaps his family troubles sapped his confidence.

The Stormers shielded him when his kicking fell apart and played him in every game he was fit. Nobody dumped on him, the way the sharks twit dumped on Fransie. And Jantjies paid that back with a good game against the Reds.

The Stormers play no differently to the Sharks, Bulls and Lions of old. If Jantjies can't make it at the Stormers, those teams are also off limits, as is the Boks. But why are we paying any attention to a member of a failed coaching staff?

Stormers can not attack from back foot ball. They have been playing locks as make shift loosies and there is no Schalk Burger to help with the quick ball.

Give them quick ball on the phases and the Stormers can score them from anywhere out. Just ask the Crusaders and the Reds last year. One they were fielding a missed penalty shot at goal 15 phases later they scored. Against the Saders a Dagg kick that did not go out and almost 30 phases later Habana finished it off with fielding a chip kick from Duvenhage.

No backline in he world can do much with constant slow ball. Even the AB launch their kick and chase game if they receive slow ball

"The Stormers do have quality outside backs, but don't know how to use them." The critical statement by Carlos who DOES know how to coach backs.

Here we have a formr BOk backline coach as head coach!!!!  Nieaber has sorted out the defence by Coetze has no clue.

Coetzee above all is not right for the Stormers.

Jantje's head is what I ahve doubts about. Is his decsdiion making good enough. Is hsi temprement good enough. There jury is still out. One bad game one reasonable game - like a yo yo.
