The Stormers Rugby Institute is gearing up for a formidable 2027 season, having secured a fresh batch of top-tier schoolboy talent from across South Africa. This recruitment drive is part of a broader strategy to bolster their ranks with young, dynamic players poised to make their mark on the professional stage.
Last year's reboot of the Institute has already paid dividends, with five of its players earning spots in the Junior Boks squad for the upcoming Junior World Championship. Among them is Markus Muller, a standout athlete who debuted with the Stormers earlier this year and recently featured for South Africa A. His rapid ascent underscores the Institute's impact in shaping future rugby stars.
"We've already seen the impact that the revival of the institute has had this year and once again, we have been able to attract the cream of the crop for 2027,"
In 2027, the Institute will host thirteen new players, including Jacobus de Villiers and Lamla Mgedezi, both of whom are aiming for their second consecutive year representing SA Schools. Joining them are Mickyle Booise, Juvan Burden, and Ethan van Biljon, all of whom are eyeing spots in the SA Schools side after playing for SA Schools A last year.
Notably, the squad includes talents from beyond the Western Cape, like explosive Northwood wing Anesu Kuzonyei and Grey College's Mgedezi, highlighting the Stormers' strategic nationwide scouting. Under the guidance of Jacques Hanekom at the Stellenbosch Academy of Sport, these young athletes are set to embark on their professional journeys.
"Project 2029 is all about winning, and with talents like these, we're setting the foundations for a promising future,"
John Dobson, the Director of Rugby, expressed confidence in the new intake aligning perfectly with the Stormers Rugby contracting model, ensuring the development of the right talent to sustain high performance levels. "There is so much talent in this region, and we have carefully selected this group. We have full faith in these players who have decided to start their professional journey with us," Dobson added.
The 2027 Stormers Rugby Institute intake includes Kyle Burger, Adrian Smith, Juvan Burden, Bernhardt Schulze, Hendre van Zyl, Jacobus de Villiers, Mickyle Booise, Ethan van Biljon, Achmat Behardien, Ethan Barker, Tiaan Basson, Anesu Kuzonyei, and Lamla Mgedezi, setting the stage for a thrilling evolution of the Stormers' squad.
