Western Province Rugby founded in 1883 .........................proudly celebrating 140 years of rugby

When Superugby started with the new franchised structure I grudgingly accepted the name change to the Stormers, although hating the label/brand .

Ffs can you ever imagine the likes of ManU, Lpool or even lowly Spurs resorting to such bollocks?

Did we lose naming rights when the Union went bankvrot ?

I reckon a rebranding, going back to WP, streeptruie etc will result in more bums on seats & more victories

WP jou lekker ding!

In a way you are wrong in this regard.   WP is still playing Curry Cup rugby - but iro of higher competition all 6 top SA franchises was created through the years to compete on higher level.   The Stormrs came on as a result after not being competitive and intitally the playes in the Stormers squad came from WP, Boland and the SWD.    After Erasmus became Director of SA Rugby and went further than that and ended up having players originally fom other provinces being included in the Stormers set-up.   At present sARU decide on distribution of players to franchises to ensure development of players in each position.

Maaik...the point is that the WP brand should be more valuable than the Stormers...I won't mind if the rebrand Stormers to WP...technically Boland still have a stake in the Stormers?

The  poblem  is time  changed.   The new situation is that SARU prescribe how many playes the major unions may contrat.  The last figure I heard  was 45 players.

However, SARU resere the right to change allocations or contractinbg of players under special circumstances.    If there are too many for instance flyhalfs in one franchise they are to be moved to another franchise.

In theory it means that there should always be enough playes playing in certain psotitions  to move to higher level - but in the case of especially flyhalfs we had srious probems in the 2023 WC series ,

If you're going to rebrand then you may as well go the whole hog and call them something with regional significance.

We're talking Cape Town right? So how about the False Bay Fairies or the Table Mountain Tailgunners?

I think those are two good suggestions for you Cape Town pansies to consider.

Edit: Or the Mother City Moffies.

If you want to go Regional, then the Sharks should be called Curry Munchers XV and the Bulls, Hofmeyer Butt Flowers : )
