Stormers vs Chiefs.....the first good data point

If you are primarily interested in Bok rugby, up until this point we have had a whole bunch of nothing. There are a few, a disappointingly few, new names. There seems to be some improvement in our ability to handle, primarily at the Stormers and Sharks......the Leins remain competent in this regard. Defence hasn't been enhanced, all our teams are still leaking oil. . But we have had no benchmark game against a top NZ team.....the Bools simply don't provide that test. So after tomorrow we will know more. It's been set up as a test of the offloading game....which is true. But it will also turn out to be a test of defence and set piece effectiveness. With the. Bok lock pair and a front row that has been potent in the early matches....I know where I'd like to take on the Chiefs. . In the end though, if it's close, the game may be decided by defence....and so far I'm not convinced by the Stormers in that regard.

 I just hope the Stormers doesn't get drawn into playing the Chiefs game. The Stormers were quite effective in changing strategy during matches when things don't work for them. I hope they can do so again.

 Dr Moz the Stormers physicality and defence will be under scrutiny due to the small hooker two loosies and some diminutive backs.
But this Stormers side has shown heart plus some nice creative flair and should be up for the game.

 The Chiefs have no chance if "you know who" is blowing whistle - I'm talking about u Jaco 

 Hakwa, Peyper was his usual pathetic self and actually favoured the Chiefs in the end. At least we know now that the Stormers can compete with the best.

What todays game showed  is that the Stormers have improved massively from the dismal showing they put up last year against the Chiefs,   There were a number of major points that needs to be borne in mind.  
The youngsters showed massive improvement.  There was a number of aimless kicks during the first half - in the second half they did not give the Chiefs possession handover kicks, allowing them to counter-attack.   The secret is that kicking is part of the game - but aimless kicking is self-destructive.  
Then there is another issue that counts in the Stormers favour - they have learnt how to score tries.   In the whole series last year the Stormers scored less tries than they did in the first six matches this year.    The secret is to play a mostly ball in hand game.
There are a few players making a huge difference and in particular SP Marais, EW Viljoen and Robert du Preez - even though I think that J-L du Plessis is a cleverer player than Du Preez.   Another promising youngster is Notshe.   I also like Dan du Plessis - but suppose he will make way for De Allende and Huw Jones.   I hope that Fleck does not bugger up by replacing Viljoen with  De Jongh.     
Kolisi is a different player from what he was last year last year.   Etzebeth started of badly - but improved drastically later in the game.      There is still some player problems - but that is not as bad as some idiots would make it out to be.     

Great win for the Stormers....it was almost a no name team once Etzebeth, who had a massive game, left the park. 

 DbDraad, that is the usual Jaco Formula. He ensures the Homeside have an Unassailable lead before attempting to favour the visiting Team when the game is in the bag. We know Jaco Waco very well. Stormers proabably dont need him to win.
