They started with so much promise. Great intensity with an effective style of keeping the ball alive through the offload while upright or pop pass off the ground. I liked the direction the team was taking it looked promising. But none of this momentum converted to points. Instead of building they let it slip through costly one on one errors like the poor de Allende miss. I’m not convinced by du Plessis at 10 and Chris v Zyl is a passenger at lock. If JD is injured move PSDT back to lock and play Wiese at 7. Move Willemse back to 10 with Lleyds at 15 The Stormers on paper are such a better side - says a lot for Fleck as a coach - but as I say their intent to keep the ball alive looked promising they need to stick with it and work on the conversion rate.

"If JD is injured move PSDT back to lock"

In my opinion, PSdT should stay at lock.
He is untouchable there.
He is so mobile, very big, quick (for a lock) and essentially doubles up as an extra loosie with bulk.

I dont rate him that highly as a flanker.

Agreed I’d only play him at lock. He does a job at 7 thanks to his carries but is not athletic enough for a flank. He’s a big oaf!! I’d play him and Eben as my Bok locks with Lood or RG on the bench. Our best options at 7 are JL du Preez or Jacques du Plessis of Montpellier.

I agree. Play Damian Willemse at #10, drop the useless "Kleintjie Carel" or whatever the Stompie blowhards call Jean-Luc du Plessis these days and stick Leyds or SP Marais at fullback.
And for the sake of the Springboks, play Pieter-Steph du Toit at lock where he's more effective.

Agree Saffex. But only move Steph to lock if JD is injured.

Right now there is not a better 7 in world rugby than Du Toit as his man of the match awards show.

Build you loose trio around Steph.

Du Toit is in the mould of the all time great number 7 Teuns Stofberg and is becoming a legend in his own right already.

With Eben, Lood, Snyman and JD we  need only consider Steph at lock should an emmergency arrive.

Wee rooitwit never liked Schalk Burger as he found him too abrasive. Rooitwit much preferred Luke Watson! I kid you not. So the very abrasive Du Toit is too rough for poor rooitwit.

By the way rooitwit how does it feel for your guppies to be the bunnies of the Bools and to have been beaten in Durban by the Stormers.  Hahahahaha

Even Stander at 10 with Willemse at 12. Because everyone seems to be ignoring the other dead spot in the backline, which at least Lloyd Burnard of News24 has the guts to mention :

On his outside, Du Plessis has Damian de Allende, who continues to bash away without impacting games in the way Bok coach Rassie Erasmus would hope for in a World Cup year.

Delande is a brainless specimen. Even try shifting Jean Luc to 12 and putting Willemse at 10, anything has to be an improvement on the current setup.

That Coetzee kid looks good too. He seems to get over the advantage line more often than most of our forwards.

Agree, that the team looks completely shapeless. I would definitely drop De Allende. He is completely out of form. Never passes or off loads. He seems to have his own mind when he has the ball in hand. Doesn't look to link or get his backs away.

Wonder if Du Plesis should shift to 12 with Nel at 13. At least we can have a bit of playmaker at 12.

Agree that Willemse should go back to 10. He is not a full back.

Nel is no great shakes either. Stormers are a bit bankrupt out back. Klein Carel isn't living up to expectations, Klein Michael is injured (not sure how badly, haven't checked since the game), SP Marais is bog average, DA clueless, Petersen blows hot and cold, Leyds tries his heart out and makes a few things happen but will probably never be a dominant force, Stander looked alright until he was too easily flummoxed by a simple cut from Sonny Bill, Willemse is a terrific athlete who still needs a lot of honing. No easy solutions.

"Petersen blows hot and cold"

He's blown more cold than anything this season.

I agree that he has the potential to do very well, but he is either very unintelligent or his brain stops for a split second as he catches a ball.

Just a bit of advice - I m not happy wit h De Allende - but we are seriously short of inside centers on national level and the alternative suggested is Esterhuizen - a slow forward pretending he a center.

The latter was in the clear twice on Saturday with Sharks players  on both sides with scoring a certainty but  he got caught by the Bulls forwards and the moves petered out.

So where to now?   I suppose that  some would want Fransie - but eh is more useless than the other two combined, .

Fat Fransie is limited, but he does offer more than brain Dead Delande, and Cart Huizen. Carthuizen is actually a clone of Frans Steyn- except without the early days when Steyn was an excellent player.

Well this is a nice rugby thread, with some sensible stuff. By all means lets move Stephanie back to 5. He's no flank and posted out literally on the left wing, he sticks out like a sore thumb. But he is going to have to work on his lineouts which have been erratic.....and perhaps even put that 10lbs back....he is tossed around too easily. Wiese is bog ordinary, but an honest grafter Willemse at 12......he doesn't have the head for 10......hopefully that comes. Kolisi frankly has been pathetic. Missing a third of his tackles on Saturday and being bullied in the rucks.....he looks like a player in second gear. Carel stays by default, and as Dave says Lleyds must go to 15. SP is done......there has to be another option.

Ja Pakie, Kleintjies Carel and Michael might realize some promise,  but has been injured more than they played for 3 seasons. DdA is stupid, Nel is untested. Leyds and Pietersen are OK, but small. Sarel is a bit better than average IMO. Our Jantjies might turn out a decent scrummie though. We have a much better team than last year and they have yet to gel. Miracle if you see how the union is run and Fleck is the coach. I expected worse this year.

Our forwards are some of the best out there.

Moz what rugby are you watching - I’m yet to see PSDT get tossed around - all I see is him charging forward making metres through contact time after time. Beenkop is the only fool on here who thinks PSDT is a flank. Where is EW Viljoen who played 13 for the Stormers all of last year. Young du Plessis played all his age group rugby at 12 not 13 and whoever said he was too flimsy for 12 might want to rethink that given he tips the scales at 103kg. de Allende had a crap game but has been good this season Chipo - fuck off!!!!

I was talking about Jean-Luc Dup, Dave. There is no way he is 103kg. Dan Dup might be.

EW Viljoen is a road to nowhere.

Wiki has him at 87kg's...he might be a bit heavier,  but not much. Might explain his regular injuries...he doesn't hold back on attack or defence. Gutsy player.

Yeah I think Dave is talking about Dan.

Certainly gutsy Draad, but the way Nonu ran through him on Saturday (he missed 5 tackles in total) doesn't bode well.

So Beeno is the only one here supporting Steph at 7.

Well Rassie has played him at 7 and so has Fleck. I agree with the coaches.

It's actually very obvious Steph is a great 7 - best in the world and his performances speak for themselves. Big pacy athlete who gets stuck in for 80 minutes. Just what you need in a hard test. Nobody in South Africa comes even close.

The oaks blame Allende for what is admittedly a poorly functioning backline. Look firstly at the coaching oaks.

Given the dismal records of Fleck and Rassie I rest my case. He is big, strong and the perfect lock - he is not a flank - he is not nimble or athletic enough. Keep him at lock where he belongs

He is a good test level loose forward, especially on slower pitches and Northern Hemisphere refs. He is too big for SuperRugby, and the world cup will be in Japan - so with a Southern Hemisphere ref on fast Japan pitches, he may be too big. When he tries to hang out wide that is when he buggers up.

He is too big for flank regardless of where he plays. He does a good job at flank because he is that good a player but he would be far better utilised at 5

@saf

percentage wise, how much do you think political quotas effect team results in SA?

i think that the Stormers have the least effective players of color, then the Sarks.

I feel very sorry for Fleck.

He isnt the greatest tactician, but his rough BEE scnerario cant be helping too much.

Chippo I’m of the opinion that most of the black players playing today are as good as the white players but realistically as a coach you would still want to be selecting your best 23 regardless of colour. So while I think there are many good black players out there if I was selecting my Bok side for instance only two black players would be certainties in my starting side - Nkosi and Dyantyi, with possibly Kolisi at 6. I’m guessing at provincial level the coaches are faced with the same dilemma. There is no ways I’d be selecting Andrews at lock for the Sharks or Orie for the Lions but then again nor would the likes of Chris v Zyl make my Stormers side or Ross Cronje or Jacobie Adriaanse my Lions side. Clearly our sides are handicapped by the insulting quota system but thankfully most of our black players are handy these days. But the system clearly sells us short despite my take on the credentials of black players these days. There can be nothing worse for a coach - having your hands tied. It defeats the object of the game. Imagine being faced with a squad of 40 players and you know that you can’t pick at least 5 of them on pure merit each game. Must be so frustrating and must affect your mindset over time. Maybe that is why our coaches appear so average? They are psychologically affected by the quota system. You keep having to deal with second best, so the mindset automatically defaults to under achieving?

The Stormers team announced for the upcoming match against the Reds is a disaster and not acceptable.   Apparently Etzebeth and Schickerling is not ready to play and  Du Toit is being rested, while there is no sign of Wilco Louw either.

Their backline is not what it should be either,

I can only foresee another loss coming up.   I am particularly worried by Etzebeth;s absence he is playing less and less because of injuries - he is now suffering from concussion after-effects and in fact in the 6 matches of the Stormers thus far the situation is as follows:-

*   Starting  line-up        -       2 games

*   Bench                        -       1 game

So in total Etzebeth - who missed the second half of the last starting game played only 40 minutes in that game - so his  playing time in the series was as follows:-

Bench game                    -       30 minutes

Full game                       -        81 minutes

Game he started              -       40 minutes

Total                               -       151 minutes

That while his team has played  486 minutes - is that good enough - especially since his absence  will look even worse after Round 7  - ie 151 minutes played as against the team total of 566 minutes?

If the concussion is a one off event I wouldn't be worried about that. But Etzebeth has had a fair amount of ankle injuries and the neck/shoulder injury. Personally I think Etzebeth's running style invites disaster. He is a very quick lock and accelerates flat out into the opposition. He is a huge man, but there are big defenders as well, and for the Boks last year Etzebeth was involved in many of these collisions. By the law of averages he is going to get hurt. You don't see Jaws charging in this way....he takes contact but in a less violent way, and offloads. We need Eben....badly. So I hope up to the WC he tempers his bull-like charges.
