Ex Keo

Josh Strauss has stepped down as captain of the Lions while coaches Carlos Spencer and Wayne Taylor have been released from their contracts.

Strauss oversaw a disastrous Super Rugby campaign, marred by further turmoil off the field. Beeld reports that he wants to focus on regaining form, which he deemed to be poor during the southern hemisphere competition.(Cant agree he was poor!!)

It is also reported that his strained relationship with head coach John Mitchell was a contributing factor. Strauss led a revolt against Mitchell after a draconian training session towards the end of the Super Rugby campaign.

Strauss has been named at blindside flank for their warm-up match for the Currie Cup against the Bulls in Johannesburg.

Meanwhile, the Lions have announced that assistant coach Spencer and conditioning coach Taylor have had their contracts with the union terminated.

Business Day reports that the Johannesburg union has exercised a clause in the coaches’ contracts that states Spencer and Taylor would be released from their contracts if the Lions finished dead last.

Mitchell, who was suspended in late June, will only learn his fate in September. Given that Spencer and Taylor’s contracts were tied to Mitchell’s, it seems likely that Mitchell will not continue with the Lions.

Wonder who was at fault re that training session. I also think these coaches are getting it in the neck when their squad did not have sufficent depth once a large number of injuries happened.

Lose and decent assessment goes out of the window and the emotions flow.

One surely has to wonder about the Lions management, it wasn't so long ago that they hailed John Mitchell as a Messiah after he won them the CC him.....now..

well i think the biggest issue is money to be fair. they are cash strapped and have nowhere to go really. mitchell was a good fire but to let spencer and co go i think is a mistake huge one but that being said lions are not helping there case in regards to getting the team out of the rut there in.

the other unions can learn a lot of how not to do things from how the lions are doing there things

they should sign buy quality players and build depth.

It is not the coaches- it is the rubish administration at the Lions that should be sacked. Bring back Louis Luyt- he may not be a great person- but he is committed and capable of producing results.

Firing coaches is just making scapegoats. It does not solve the administration problem. The Lions have become(some time ago) the laughing stock of world rugby. The head is rotten. It is a poisen chalice for any coach to accept

Guys, Louis Luyt now lives in Balitto Bay and is a Sharks man.

Transvaal/Lions are now reaping the rewards of what that planted many years ago...poaching players form other unions.

What goes around

Comes around.

Sad but true.

So much for the Strauss myth, mostly a beard derived myth. An ordinary player, and failed captain.
