I'd say luck plays a bigger part than smarts, and the ability to handle playoff pressure even more so. Both France and Australia were superior to England in 2007, for example, but England handled the playoff pressure better to see both of them off in the quarters and semis. Isolated events, bounce of the ball can also turn games. The French forward pass that sank NZ in 2007 is a memorable example. Playoff rugby is a different beast to a logged tournament.

You mean Seb that the abs could win?

No, the theory about giving people the easiest of runs to a Final and them still losing is highlighted by NZ, JW.
Glad your country can be of some use to the world !!!

No Becs, sadly Scotland is pushing it a little too far into fairyland although I would love them to win...rugby is too small there but ironically Scotland has beaten England, South Africa and Australia (but never NZ). In support of NZ, they are most of the TIME the best side but not every year but laterly yes.
In the first WC, they won in 1987 but we'll never know if they were better than the Springboks then because obviously if you don't play them how are to know. The next was Australia (the Boks did not play either) but that side and the next side 4 years were phenominal Wallaby sides, I believe Australia will struggle to get back there, during that period NZ were also good but France was the spoilers.
SA won their first world cup but there was so many peculiar things and hype, semi final controversy, first with rain and field and foul play in Canada match with Dalton spoiling it that we had to play water polo...the French try was disallowed...looked at it many times and imo no doubt a try...the ground had an inch layer of water...so what? The Mandela thing etc, etc, Louis Luyt moving hell and high water (no pun intended) SA just HAD to win...politics, actually world politics...very powerful.
Sean Fitzpatricks side...definitely in the top 4 rugby sides EVER, speaking of this and going off at a tangent and just my choice.
The best rugby side in SA was Philip Nels Springboks in 1937, the best NZ side was under Sean and the best rugby side ever was the Br Lions side under Willie John Mc Bride in the 70's and Englands best side was under Martin Johnson.
In 2007, France got rid of NZ (clever) and England Australia (clever rugby). SA beat England (who happened to get France on an off day, which occurs every now and then ). NZ were the best side but not the smartest.
In 2011, France actually won on the field but the scoreboard was short of one measly point (well known wisdom of uncle snoekbek). NZ incidentally were the best team in the world but they definately did not win or deserve that win

No, we won fair and square against France, thanks !!!

Whats that about possums ?They are a nasty destructive pest outside their native Australia ,at least I made money from them as a kid trapping them and selling the skins .Gotta good recipe for possum stew.Put the possum in a pot with a river stone ,boil for 12 hours .After 12 hours cook some veges in a seperate pot .Take out possum add veges and eat rock...Same recipe applies or English carp although you can substitute gorse and Sottish thistle for veges .
