TMO mistake denies Anscombe's record try

Published: 7:19PM Monday May 06, 2013 Source: ONE Sport

Super Rugby bosses admit one of the television match official's decisions in the Chiefs-Rebels game last Friday was incorrect.

At the conclusion of the match, Chiefs fullback Gareth Anscombe was denied a record-equalling fourth try, when TMO Steve Leszczynski decided that replacement winger Patrick Osborne had knocked the ball on at the previous breakdown, despite replays proving inconclusive.

"I think the last decision against the Chiefs, which was ruled as a knock-on, we have agreed is incorrect," says Sanzar referees boss Lyndon Bray. "You cannot prove that there was an obvious knock-on by the player who comes through on the Rebels halfback..

The ARU should do the right thing and sack him! The cheating was too obvious and quite embarrassing really!

Hakwa

OK - sack him - but that is a tip of the iceberg.   What about the other referees tthat blundered their way through the competition this year - for instance Steve Walsh - and a few others?   There was really no consistency in refereeing decisions and itis time action is taken.   Refereeing is a well-paid job and blundering referees should be reprimanded and their matchfees suspended in whole or in part.

did they have time to go through numerous video replays before lying infront of the whole world to see! Don't make me cringe again Mike! It made the hairs at the back of my neck stand on end! It was horrifying to see on National TV - almost like Bill Clinton saying "I did not have sexual relations with that woman"

This oaks is a kiwi smokescreen!

Sack the guy if necessary but sack the incompetent/bent kiwi refs as well.

bwahahahahahahahahahahaha Hollywood hahahahahahaHabana! We still won Beeno - we're not making a fuss because we lost but because it was embarrassing! Your Teams need to own their shortcomings Beeno and correct them! Yes, the ref is the easy target for a Team that does not know the rules - for example - not lifting a opposition players leg during/after a lineout - it might cost you a RWC Quarter Finals. Hakwa patient as ever in his education of Beeno about rugby rules and gentlemanly conduct.

Bean Brain this is the sort of stuff the Mighty Chiefs can expect on a regular basis being the current Super XV champions. How Jaco Peyper kept his job after a similar 'diabolical' decision  at Newlands - note Justin Marshall yr heros quote there - beggars belief.

But being the champion side they are the Mighty Chiefs take it all in their stride...Legends..

TMO's were horrible this past week - don't know why its so hard. Their directive is clear: "Indisputable visual evidence" and yet they constantly assume and read into a situation.

I thought the first try awarded against the Kings was ridiculous. There was clear obstruction at the point of linebreak by at least one Waratah player if not on both sides.

TBH i thought it was a good call when i first saw it, but after a few replays i thought it was a 50/50, but the bosses are correct, theres no clear angle where a knock on is evident, it was more speculation from the TMO albeit warranted speculation, but thats not enough to say no try.

but theres one call a lot worse then that one and that was higginbothams try. english passes the ball 10 meters from the tryline, higginbotham catches the ball 5 meters from the try line??? WTF???

IMO the TMO should of been serverly reprimanded for that one.

Yea - forgot about that one in the Rebels game. Didn't understand what they were saying about backwards out of the hands, but momentum carried it forward so its OK????? Huh? Forward is forward as far as I know and that one was clearly caught forward of where it was passed from.
