Brumbies v Landers
Canes v Sharks
Cheifs v Stormers
Lions v Saders
Some good match ups. Stormers have hid behind the format all year, and now have to finnally face a kiwi side. Expect Cheifs to hammer them. Canes are the form team of the comp, this could be their year. But anything could happen, based on last year. Lions at home gonna be tough, but I expect Saders to win it. IMO it is going to be a repeat of last years final Canes v Landers.

For our sanity I hope the Lions make it to the final! Us South Africans need a positive rugby story right now. The Stormers and Sharks don't deserve it, but I really think the Lions do. Also, they are the only team in the competition that has been able to consistently challenge the NZ sides. That alone qualifies them in my book.

Canes are the hot favourites and should thump the Sharks.
I think the Lions have it in them to take the Crusaders out.
Stormers could upset the apple cart by beating the Chiefs at home who seem to blow hot and cold.
Same goes for the Highlanders. Hot and cold all season long. My money's on the Brumbies ... especially at home.
Could be a Brumbies vs Canes ... Lions vs Stormers semi ... followed by a Lions vs Brumbies final in Jihannesburg.
That would certainly shut the arrogant Kiwis up ... wouldn't it??

No arrogance in wee cc I see, he's just a "good will towards all & may the best team win kind of bloke".
Lions have a good shot, Brumbies would be a major upset but stranger things have happened.  Seb, Beeno has been "playing tennis" & attending "conferences" a lot this season so he must have stockpiled his pills - I hope he has for our sake at least There are rumors that a bloke called "the accountant" has been making "financial arrangements", I'm looking into this with urgency

Thanks for the article  Dr Win.   However when I tried to open the article. they said I need to download  an appliamce top open the article – so I copied and pasted the article:-

“The presiding view is that the Lions took a huge gamble not sending their best side to Argentina for their final conference game and it backfired.

All they needed to take the No 1 ranking was a losing bonus point against the Jaguares and with that they would have been assured of home advantage for as long as they kept winning.

Supposedly, Lions coach Johan Ackermann will now be regretful and embarrassed that his second-string side failed to secure the single point they needed and instead of playing the Sharks, now face the Crusaders.

But that implies Ackermann's gamble was reckless and ill thought out - which it wasn't.

He took a calculated risk knowing that the worst case scenario was not one to be overly concerned about. Every way he looked, the right thing to do was to keep his best players at home.

What he knew before playing the Jaguares was that the Lions were guaranteed to finish no lower than second. He knew they were assured of a home quarter-final and a home semifinal should they keep winning in the playoffs.

He also knew that if the Lions finished second overall, they would be playing one of the Kiwi teams in the quarter-final.

So while the Crusaders were getting smashed by the Hurricanes in Christchurch, Ackermann's frontline troops were resting up.

His top team have had two weeks to rest, train, sleep in their own beds and turn up at Ellis Park on Sunday in the best shape possible.

The Crusaders, on the other hand, had to recover after the Hurricanes, patch themselves up and hang around until today before catching a long-haul flight to South Africa.

The alternative was for the Lions to fly their best players to Argentina, hope they could take the points they needed and then scramble back to South Africa to face the Sharks, who have built form and confidence with two strong home wins.

Ackermann could see that the rewards of not taking his best players to Buenos Aires easily outweighed the risks. What he will also have factored in is that if a New Zealand team did take the No 1 ranking, they faced a high chance of playing another New Zealand team in the semifinals.

Given the competitiveness and closeness between the four New Zealand sides left, it is by no means inconceivable that if the Lions, if they can keep winning, could end up the highest-ranking side left when the competition gets down to two teams.

Even if they are not, Ackermann will be quite happy to fly to New Zealand for a final - knowing they beat the Chiefs in Hamilton this year and his top players haven't done any long-haul travel since early March.”

I basically said the same thing in an earlier posting – so I think in this case the Crusaders are in fact at a disadvantage in the upcoming game.

Mike your forgetting Canes put 50 on Lions in Durban. But somehow Sharks beating Canes once over month and a half go means something. With Canes hosting a QF. I Think the Sharks know they are gonna have to be better to beat the Canes.

Luke

I think you are a bit mixed up with the Canes and the Crusaders.   Both beat the Lions in Johannesburg – the Canes very easily and the Crusaders by 6 points.

The next week the Canes played the Sharks in Durban and got whipped badly by the Sharks, so I am not saying that the Canes will not win at home – but the Sharks has a small chance to beat them if the repeat the round robin game.

Lions will crash and burn vs the Crusaders who have had their number.Stormers vs Chiefs will be interesting. Will the fact that the Stormers have had an armchair ride to qualify  be an advantage or a hindrance?Canes to beat Sharks and the Brumbies have trained off in recent weeks.

Hurricanes wary of bogey team Sharks; By Campbell Burnes; NZ Herald

The Sharks may be rank underdogs for Saturday's Super Rugby quarter-final in Wellington, but the Hurricanes are not preparing for a romp.

Far from it. They still feel the pain of the 32-15 loss to the Sharks in May.

So while some pundits are predicting the Sharks will limp into the capital, feel the cold wind and get pumped by the Hurricanes, who are suddenly motivated by a throwaway line from a former Wallabies hooker five months ago, John Plumtree knows better.

"One thing about the Sharks, they don't mind touring New Zealand," says the Hurricanes assistant coach, who was at the tiller of the Sharks for several seasons. "The Hurricanes, I think, have beaten them just twice in the last eight occasions. So we have a horrible record against them," said the Hurricanes assistant coach, who was at the tiller of the Sharks for several seasons.

"The Sharks know what they have to do to beat us. They have a lot of massive characters in that team."

The Hurricanes would have pored over the footage of that last defeat to the Sharks. They'll know what is required, particularly as far as their tactical approach.

"They manhandled us, slowed down our ball, our lineout didn't function. We turned over 28 balls," Plumtree said.

The Sharks, under their astute coach Gary Gold, will look to their seasoned and speedy three-quarter line of Odwa Ndungane, Lwazi Mvovo and JP Pietersen, who may be playing his final match for the team. In the pack, prop Tendai 'Beast' Mtawarira returns after being rested for the 40-29 win over the Sunwolves that booked their playoffs berth, just ahead of the Bulls, as the third South African side.

"They've got some big ball carriers and they are pretty effective choke tacklers, have a good drive and the set-piece is sound. They had the best defence in the competition, conceding the least tries of all the teams. They are a tough wall to break down, and they are a very capable side," warned Plumtree.

And while some were trying to make a connection between the saga when five players - Cory Jane, the Saveas, Victor Vito and Chris Eves were stood down for narrowly missing a curfew in Durban - and their resurgence since that match, it is not uppermost in the minds of the Hurricanes as they go about their preparation, which has clearly got better.

Halfback TJ Perenara, who had a big game against the Crusaders, knows what the Hurricanes must do, and not do, in a quarter-final week.

"We know that the last five weeks mean nothing if we don't play well this week. They are a good team, big boys who run hard. We experienced it, so we know we've got our hands full.

"They counter-attacked us pretty well, and lived off a lot of things we did poorly, so we need to take ownership of our skillset."

This NZ Herald article sums up the situation well in terms of the Sharks record against the Canes. Glad Plumtree is keeping his feet on the ground. Sharks can play negative rugby & if the Canes don't execute well it will be a close game. Canes by 10!

JW

I do prefer not to make result predictions before  the teams are in fact announced.   Normally  such predictions can be problematic, as is evident from the following:-

*   The only game between the Sharks and the Hurricanes this year was in Durban and in that game the Sharks gave the Hurricane a bad hiding in Durban.    So why would it be an easy victory for the Hurricanes?    There are two factors favouring the Hurricanes, namely home town advantage  amd the Hurricanes recent form was sparkling while the Sharks performance was the opposite – even though they won the games.   So my own guess is a 7 point or less win for the Hurricanes, but I do not rule out  completely a win by the Sharks

*    The Brumbies Highlanders game is the one where I think an easier win by the Highlanders is ln the cards.  Yje Brumbies had some poor games against NZ teams  and I think have run out of steam.   Probably a 15 point win by the Highlanders is my guess.

*    The Crusaders beat the Lions by 6 points in the round robin game – but based on arguments I have previously raised I think the Lions   is going to win this one.    Lions  by 8+ points this one.

*    I do think the Chiefs has a chance to beat the Stormers  - but I would not put money on it.   Matter of fact there are a number of factors which would benefit the Stormers in this cae – eg home town advantage, the long trip from NZ and the rested Stormers players.  The Stormers by 8+points in this case .

The Kiwis have written us all off.
We don't deserve to be on the same field as these "rugby gods" ... all noble and righteous ... and should count ourselves lucky that they've insisted we have a few undeserving playoff spots.
All they need to do is show up and the match is theirs.
Seems the Brumbies are also in for a hiding.
It's an all Kiwis semi ... followed by an all Kiwi final.
This according to War "DipMyWickInMutton" dad, Moolaa, SaderTwat and 3IQ.
They've even gone as far as to have their favourite world cup ref appointed to a match ... just in case us commoners actually think of putting up a fight ... squash a possible uprising.
I'm sure he'll be under strict instructions ... as he was back in 2011.
I will be at Ellis Park cheering my boys on.
Good luck to the Lions, Sharks, Stormers and Brumbies. Hope you all upset the apple cart.

CC - As I mentioned emotional appeal does not win matches.   None of the quarterfinals are as one-sided as the NZ supports on this site claim they are.  Matter of fact based on performance I would not be surprised if only one of the NZ teams go through to the semi's.

I see the oaks are missing their rugby tutorials and are all at sea! Also there appears to be no relenting from the kbbs blowhards whose arrogance is reaching Everest proportions.
I have been very busy on various sites educating the folks politically (The support for TRUM*P is surging all over and he will win by a landslide). My labours have paid off and TRUM*P is now the GOP nominee..
Governor Chris Christie has made a speech that utterly destroys crooked Hillary. She will go to prison. See Beeno's esteemed TRUM*PET. THe EU nations are increasingly euroseptic and anti migration. So on ALL calls the sooooo astute Beeno is being proved right as with matters pertaining to rugby! My good friend and failed mole hunter Just Win (AT any cost) spends his days wondering how I manage to be so right!!! rooitwitterbug  is a brighter shade of jalapeno green. Bwahahahahahhahaha
Beeno the voice of reason sanity and sound judgement. Viva Beeno Viva!(Ou maaaikie will recognise the VIVA from his anc days!)
As to medication, scientists are still trying to find something strong enough to help poor warped DUD and ab ASS. It will be too late to save them I am afraid.
I am off to create my Christie post and then its off to tell the Americans and Europeans what they need to do. The audience here you understand is very small and it's the world stage for me!

Julian Savea dropped to bench for Hurricanes quarter-final clash; NZ herald

All Blacks winger Julian Savea has been dropped to the bench for the Hurricanes quarter-final clash against the Sharks in Wellington on Saturday.

Jason Woodward has been moved to the left wing after starting at centre against the Crusaders last weekend. Matt Proctor will start in the midfield alongside Willis Halaholo with the reshuffling pushing Savea out of the starting XV.
