Just saw a notification on my Superbru menu that the SuperSport Rugby Challenge is starting in 2 days time.
Having never heard of it, I clicked on it and saw the usual suspects like the Bulls, Lions, Sharks and Western Province participating. For a second I was horrified, thinking they'd re-named the Currie Cup but then I realized it's several months too early for the Currie Cup and so I read further. This is in fact the replacement tournament for the old Vodacom Cup.
The competition involves all 14 South African provincial rugby teams as well as the Welwitschias from Namibia (or the Windhoek Draught Welwitschias to give them their new full name) and the 15 teams are split into 5 conferences . . . North, Central and South.
From what I can gather they will be playing plenty of double headers as well as Sunday games and a lot of the games will be played in much smaller venues which is a great idea in my opinion.
Can't find a homepage for this tournament but the Wikipedia article is pretty comprehensive.
Go Sharks!
