Taute prefers fullback!!

Er Dave. This is a good example of my always disagreeing with you. You claimed Taute was the man to take over Bok 13 on a permanent basis. I demurred, but felt he had potential at fullback. You and your buddy the Fruit would say I was just trying to be contrary.

But the player  then says, he would prefer to play fullback.

""I don't have a fixed position, but would really like to be considered at full-back," he told Die Burger newspaper.

"Obviously I'd also play centre if required. My strong point at full-back is my attacking game"

If required he says, only if it is necessary in other words.  It would be nice if , for once, you admit you had this wrong.

I am not sure why people insist on Taute playing at center.   To my mind his best performances in fact for the Lions were when he played at full back.   I personally would rather see that he plays in his preferred position where he himself feels he can do better than at center

My question is - for what purpose did the Stormers signed a contract with Taute - was it their intention to play him at full back - or at center? We will not know and it will only become apparent when the selections for the Sper 15 team materializes.

I am worried though about the issue.   If he plays at full back then unlike the Springboks - where there are other players available for selection at center-  the Stormers would have a serious problem in those positions.   At this stage they have De Villiers and then the following:-

   *    De Jongh - good defender, absolutely useless in attack

   *    Brache - really don't know why he is in the team

   *    De Allende - moved from wing to center - totally untested at center

   *    JP du Plessis - very good player - but constantly ignored by Coetzee.

   *    Howard - played for the Under 21's this year - exceptional talent.

De Villiers cannot last much longer and Coetze seems to be "married" to the two most ordinary platers in the backline - Brache and De Jongh.   Allnde is an absolute guess and Howard effectively had played no rugby on senior level.   Du Plessis is classy - but he is ignorred by Coetzee.

The Stormers need to sharpen up on attack  - but how would that be possible under th present circumstaces?

Mike, that's a separate and very good point. But the issue I'm addressing here is the insistence, that a youngster with very limited experience, be directly shunted into international rugby in a non preferred position. Absolute bloody lunacy.

On the point of WP centres, you could make that point about South African centres as a whole. Who do the Bools have? Who do the Sharks have....Whitehead who couldn't run it in against Spies with a 10 metre start and 50 metres to go? Nope we are very badly off for centres and I would say, while JdV still has his pace, JdV and de Jongh will not be outplayed by any SA pairing.

Of the youngsters, I have not seen Howard or du Plessis, but I do think Jordaan has the makings of a test centre. He certainly performed well in the S15 final.

Um Moz if you read that correctly and the whole article, Taute says he wants game time and the only chance of that is at 15, given the Stormers have Jean, de Jongh, Brache, du Plessis and Howard as centres. So try again

He does nor say he prefers fullback, he says he will play anywhere. Fact is the Boks and the Lions played him at 13 as this is where they sees his future, its the same position he played for the Baby Boks.

He was great against Oz at 13 and like most of the Bok side, has a less than great game against the AB's - conclusion therefore is that we have found a candidate for the Bok 13 spot, given how damn poor Jean has been there all season. If Taute fails after say the next 6 or 7 tests at 13 then fair enough drop him.

No coach would be stupid enough to conclude what you did after one average showing against the AB's, particularly since he was so good the week before against Oz. Hell a coach with savy and substance, would have more faith than you.

i think not just in terms of his own development but for the boks he must surely be groomed in the fullback position. with the robotic players doing the rounds like zane and joe pieterson he is surely in the drivers seat to take over that mantle of the premier 15 for SA

Nope carpet, he is our answer at 13, Lambie is our answer at 15, with Goosen the answer at 10. Taute needs to stay at 13

Saffex, I have an idea that your Afrikaans is not too hot. This is what is quoted in the article:

“Ek het nie ’n vaste posisie in gedagte nie, maar sal baie daarvan hou om as heelagter oorweeg te word. Natuurlik sal ek ook senter speel as dit van my vereis word,” het Taute gesê.

That looks a lot like he would prefer to play fullback. The part about being prepared to play anywhere is pretty much standard operational precedure when a player is asked about his position in a team, especially inder these circumstances. I would not read too much into that, if I were you. Unless of course you prefer to interpret it as "I would prefer to play at 13...."

If you take everything in the article that literally, you will probably have him at flyhalf as well:

“My sterkpunt op heelagter is my aanvallende spel. Ek kan ook takties speel, want ek was my hele skoolloopbaan deur ’n losskakel.”

Oh wait. your golden boy Jantjies is in his way at flyhalf. LOL

Um the key is that he has no hard and fast position but would prefer to be considered at 15 as that is his only hope of starting - the guy is not stupid. Nowhere does he say he prefers 15 - FACT

He knows he has little hope of making the starting 15 at outside centre, given Coetzees love of average de Jongh.........he sees an opening at 15 and is stating his case to be considered there.

Find me an artcile that says he prefers 15 and I'll listen

There have been several indications that the Stormers want to play him at 15 and rightly so as its his best position and where he is most needed.
I agree Alistair and Fleckie are not getting the Du Plessis and Howard issue quite right. Hopefully we wil see more of these two next year. Allende could be a big find from some comments I am seeing an dis als oa youngster. Not seen too much of him and its been on the wing. Apparently he is a very cool customer mentally.

Huge backline potential emmerging at WP. Jean, Joe, Gio and Bryan to school the youngters next year.

Since there was disagreement about the comments of Taute as to his position as outlined in the article - I read the article and came to the same conclusion as Mozart said.   I will consequently quote exactly what Taute said to Die Burger:-

My own translation of that is that Taute would prefer to play at full back - but he would if otherwise required play in other positions as well.   It is indeed questionable where he would in fact play for the Stormers as mentioned earlier by me.   I always prefer to see players playing in their preferred position - other than moving them around - they are normally less effective if played in other positions.   Lets wait and see what happens in future with the team selections of the Stormers.

Just one issue asie from the rugby issue.   The Afrikaans people had absolute faith in anything written in Die Burger.   I jokingly in sarcasm once referred to it as follows:-

"The Bible may be wrong in some respects - Die Burger can never be wrong" 

 

In a different century Dave would be a Flat Earther.....the player literally says he would prefer to play fullback. And Dave claims the player says: "he does nor say he would prefer to play fullback". Maybe the trick is in the 'nor".....hahahaha.

he himself rates himself as a better option at 15 we have loads of options at 13 with jordaan ext ext. we dont have free thinking attacking 15 in SA that is the problem. lambie to be fair can slot in both but for his own development i might want him at 10 to be fair. between him and goosen for the top spot.

with jacques fourie coming back if he takes the massive offer then the 13 jumper will become over populated. it makes no sense to have more than 6 contenders for a jumper and have almost none at 15. to shift it makes more sense. the way lambie has lead the sharks assault in super rugby and in the CC must surely let everyone sit and up and take note that he can be a great first 5/8

Just provide me with a quote that has Taute saying he prefers 15 and I'll gladly concede - until that time, what Taute has said in this article is that he would prefer to be considered at 15 as he wants to start for the Stormers. If he said he would prefer to be considered at centre, he would not have secured a starting spot under Coetzee.............you clowns can bang on all you want - FACT is he has NEVER said he prefers 15

With respect - I think my Afrikaans may be a bit better than yours.   The words "sal baie daarvan hou" used in Afrikaans indeed imply a preference for something - in this case rather to play at full back.  

Oh for crying out loud do you not get why he is saying he would prefer to be considered at 15. Nowhere does he say he prefers fullback to centre.

Let me spell it out for the last time - he would prefer to be considered at 15 as he then stands a chance of starting for the Stormers. He wants to be in the starting 15 and not on the bench - that is his goal at the Stormers, he wants game time and a challenge.

And you fail to complete the sentence for convenience sake, he at no point ever says he prefers fullback, he says he would prefer to be considered there - there is a HUGE difference. I know I might be a lawyer, but come now chaps even you can pick that one up!!

 My strong point at full-back is my attacking game. 

Sapp is playing the old lawyer's trick.....lie about it with confidence.  Taute would prefer to play fullback.....he said as much. What he didn't say was what Sapp infers.....that the preference is because he wont start at centre. Imagine the guy who started at centre for the Boks last time out, walking away from the position at a provincial level,  because he can't compete. Pure speculation by Sapp, which if true and it's not, would infer Taute really thought he blew his reputation at centre in the last test.

taute to me can become a great if not legend full back. at 13 there is to much concentration of players at all the unions.

One of the most interesting aspects of being a member of this site is the constant discussions and differences of opinion between Mozart and Saffex.   For me the one respresents the conservtive approach to rugby - the other one the liberal one.   Realistically the truth really lies somewhere inbetween.
