What's the point of having a side from Japan in super rugby when near on half of the players aren't even Japanese?

I don't get it. Wasn't the point of it all to strengthen Japanese rugby?

Much rather have a team of mixed coconuts from the South Pacific in the mix.

Joseph is also the Japan national coach. So I am guessing he well be molding in how he wants to play in the test arena. With the WC in Japan next year also. They well want to invest more in the Japanese market. So they well stay. Watch for their inclusion in the Rugby Championship next few years too. And every time they catch the ball. Commentators over selling it with how amazing this is for the Super Rugby product.

no news from jaguares,... not even in their website

the reason why the sunwolves are still in the comepetition is not to promote the japanese rugby,.... well, that could be a secondary reason,.... but the main reason is the japanese TV market,.... money in rugby, and all other sports, comes from the TV deals and Japan has the population of France and Great Britain combined,... hence has a TV market tantamount to those of France and Great Britain combined,... it's a very complicated bet that I doubt will be successful but it's probably worth to take,.... can you imagine the SH teams having the money of the French and English clubs together?

Wow ... so much for promoting rugby, huh?

Can't the South Sea Islands combined compete with the Japanese market?

The South Sea Islanders are passionate about rugby and besides that have some amazing players just sitting idle. Japan on the other hand doesn't have the same quality of players, as you can see by all their imports. They're a tiny people and not exactly suitable to the sport at top level.

I'm sure every household and village hut in the South Pacific has a TV and so everyone will be tuned in to all things rugby related ... whereas Japan has bigger interests in other sports and rugby is probably only as popular there as it is in Oz

I think there is a financial attachment in the case  of the Super Rugby.   Supersport has massive interest in China and Japan either themselves or through partners,   That provide a huge percentage of the money flows into Sanzar.  

They are interested in expanding their market into those countries and I will not be surprised if China is added to the mix to get a foothold there iro rugby.    Even if the can get 10% of the population interested it would represent more people than France, England, Spain and Portugal has combined.

That is why the Sevens caters for the big population areas in the  World  and the idea is to extent that interest to other formats of the game.   

I sometimes  wonder whether  the influence in rugby and other sporting codes of TV companies are as beneficial as the TV empires make it out to be.    That they control things totally is evidenced by w hat happened years ago iro Super Rugby.   There was a power failure in NZ and the start of the game was delayed by about an hour,   The result was an overlap with the subsequent game in Australia.  The comment from the Supersport chap was:  "This is totally unacceptable and the franchises must get their house in order - otherwise they will feel the effect in their purses/"

a team from the Pacific Islands would be very nice,... but deficitary

Fiji has a population of 900.000, Tonga 100.000 and Samoa 200.000,.... a combined population of 1.200.000

japan has 100 fold that amount,.... more than 120 millions,... there's much much much more money,... even if rugby is not the first sport or one of the firsts (in England and France rugby is the second sport far from the first, soccer) it would be worthy
