The level of rugby the AB's are playing at the moment is just so much better than any other nation! And no, I am not joking. It is starting to get to the point where no matter who the AB's play, it is almost not worth watching! I may sound pessimistic, but it s not a matter of whether or not the AB's are going to win anymore, ffs, it is not even a matter of whether they will be picking up a bonus point anymore!
I know this may sound very complimentary to the AB's, and I guess it is, but i think it is bad for the sport! It is like America at the Olympics, they are totally dominant, and while they may celebrate their dominance, I am pretty certain that not one neutral supporter outside America, was hoping they would win any medal they won.
I don't have the solution, but I can say this, The Currie Cup is a complete joke as far as support is concerned, Super Rugby is a watered down version of what it used to be with declining interest in SA and I am guessing other nations as well. The Rugby Champs is a predictable one horse race, and as a result has become boring! FFS, even the World Cup has become a tournament where everybody is playing for second position behind the NZ'ers.
Well, done NZ for seriously getting it right, and I am in no way having a go at you lot, but the rest of the rugby world needs to pull some serious finger to close the gap, or everybody, including the AB's, will be losers!

The Lions managed to say in touch with New Zealand super rugby franchises but that's because of the coaching and management team.
The Goats have a group of mor0ns running them and are backed by a racist regime.
It's a disaster and we'll see this reflected in the RC this year.
You cannot in all honesty expect anything special from a team riddled with quotas and incompetence.
I want to see the English under Jones take the All Blacks on. I think the contest will be a lot closer than anticipated.

Rooi, you missed the point I was trying to make. I was just stating that any total dominance in sport by a single entity will make the sport less attractive. I simply used the US as an example as the Olympics are relevant at the moment. You are 100% correct regarding the per capita medal table, and that is the real measure of a nations sporting strength...but then it becomes an argument of third world vs 1st world and the disadvantages faced by the latter nations.
Simply put, rugby will suffer because NZ dominance will make it predictable and therefore boring.

Okay, but were you complaining about rugby being boring back in 1998 when Gary Teichmann's Springboks were beating everyone? I know I wasn't!
22 Aug 2016, 10:11#6
I was not, just as the NZ'ers aren't complaining now.

The coaching in New Zealand is far ahead of South Africa-, especially in backline play.
Also far ahead of the other coaches in the world- evident by the amount of New Zealand coaches around the world.
Surely John Mitchell was the catalyst at the Lions - and Ackerman was able also to learn about coaching.
Eddie Jones takes over England, and they go to 2nd in the world. (albeit he is an Australian coach- but he is on par with some of the new Zealand coaches.
Our coaches are useless. It was obvious over the weekend that the Bok players saved the game from the death- despite our new coach.
As soon as our coaches have a little bit of pressure- they resort to 11 man crash ball.
When you compare the New Zealand Super Rugby teams and test teams- it looks like the team is following a game plan. It is like a well tuned and synchronised army.

Sharkbok, I think it's time we stopped attributing everything to coaching.
Yes, the Kiwis have some of the best coaches around but to imply that is the one and only reason why they are the best team in the world ignores factors like their schoolboy systems, the skills of their players and the pride that New Zealanders take in wearing the national jersey.
It's not just the coaches. Steve Hansen could resign today and become the Springbok coach and this time next year I would still bet dollars to doughnuts that the All Blacks would beat us with their new coach.

"Rooi, you missed the point " - sad to say a continuing state of affairs.Rooitwitterbug please read wee cc's comments. If Nz had this sort of rubbish going on they wouldn't be in the top 10. bwahhahahahahahahaha
Folks will moan about the Boks but we have a quota coach and quota players. We should name the Boks the Quota Bok s. GB for short. Then there are numerous other problems whereby w shoot ourselves in the foot. That we are still competitive is frankly amazing.
As for the half baked kbbs here, nobody should take their arrogant chest beating blowhard stance seriously.
Those in the know in nz, a few folk who have said as much, know SA is a sleeping giant, awaiting redemption from racist anc policies and a new merit approach re the game in its entirety.
Away with kbb blowhards!

It's a totally different mindset to the one we have.
Mediocrity is the pass mark here.
They strive for excellence ... and it starts with their attitude ... and as you pointed out earlier ... they punch way above their weight for such a small nation.

Fully agree CC. Whilst other countries strive with ALL their might for excellence the anc forces a racist approach. We tolerate ridiculous things and wont change. EG too many franchises. The only matter that is difficult to solv e is players going overseas. However I doubt all has been done to retain our players.

about the boredom of watching the AB play,....... I disagree,...... it can be true that the RC (and possibly SR) is in the way of losing the competitiveness (which is not good) due to the NZ rugby's superiority,..... but this hasn't happenned yet, it's only in the way of
and watching the AB is a pleasure for any rugby lover,...... their skill-set, their tactics, their way of playing the total rugby with the whole team playing around the park, etc, etc., are second to none,....... they are the only team capable of playing the way they play,..... they've reached a level that other teams have not been able to,....... and this is itself enjoyable to watch (for sure if you are an AB fan but not only)
as some English men wrote after the AB' last game:
"The dexterity of their forwards' ball handling reminds me more of
the USA Olympic basketball team than anything ever seen in rugby
union. Quite simply they are reshaping the sport," (former England international Stuart Barnes)
"It is always a pleasure to watch sporting greatness in action, so this was rugby ecstasy." (London's Sunday Telegraph)
still to be seen if the AB can mantain this level for the whole competition (and the EOYT),.... but if they can it will be a deed of merit,....... and very enjoyable to watch,....

What utter rot....we beat NZ in 2014 playing hard direct rugby behind Pollard at 10. Find the right players and we can still run them close.....but not with Goosen, Allende, Krielx2, Mapoe, Whiteley, Lomp and Jantjies.
Starting in the pack Marx and Kitshoff into the front row....Willemse at 4 with Etzebeth at 5 will give us the power we need to provide a crucial edge over NZ.

as for the quota system,...... it's just the excuse for not recognizing the AB ability,..... and SA rugby's failures (hence for not taking measures to try to correct them)
how many quotas were starting last sat? Mohoje?
and he was the best bok loosie,..... SARU and Coetzee (who is the SA coach with the best CV, hardly a quota) are not applying the quotas,...... there were only 6 starting black players and from the 3 bench players only de Jongh played 8 minutes,....
for sure all this quota story doesn't help (and it's absurd and useless),...... but the problems of the SA rugby are others,..... some pointed here,..... the coaching level, the skill of the players..... in the last decade the SA coaching level and skills of the players have stalled while NZ's have evolved alongside the changes the sport of rugby and its laws have suffered,....... and this is going to only deepen in the near future,...... next year (or in 2018) the new breakdown laws currently in trial in the kiwi NPC are going to make the game even faster,...... tactics and the skills required will have to evolve and will mark the differences in a bigger way than currently,....... if the SA rugby doesn't want to stay behind they have to face these problems

@mozart,
"What utter rot....we beat NZ in 2014 playing hard direct rugby behind Pollard at 10."
right,.....
but this was the only win since the 2011 WC (in 8 games),....... if you
want to keep this winning record (or losing record, better said) you
can stick with the "hard direct rugby",........
as I said, rugby
is evolving and next year it will be faster with the new breakdown
rules,...... the hard direct rugby won't be able to face the fast total
rugby played by the kiwis

Actually if anything rugby has become slower, with less space for the backs. I doubt any rule changes are going to keep ahead of modern enveloping defences.
The Boks only won once in 8 tests it's true, but were ahead until late in several other tests, notably the WC and the 2013 decider. It was not the style of play that beat them but crucial defensive lapses and disciplinary mistakes. perhaps fitness played a role.
We contributed to our own demise with poor selections....JJ, Kriel, Allende were not able to execute the game plan....and their defence was weak.
Certainly slicker handling among the forwards distinguishes the more progressive teams including the Lions. There is no reason not to add that wrinkle....White did with the Brumbies, and our guy can be trained to handle better.
But it is still a question of competive advantage.....our's is power, the ABs' mobility. If we try and out run the ABs we will lose every time.

Bluebok strangely enough it doesnt matter who we play apart from the odd minnow[ and now I have to worry about Japan as well !] I still get nervous ,especially against tir one nations even teams like Ireland .And true sharkbok I reckon some of Mitchels coaching has seeped into the Lions but kudos to them for keeping it going ,the rest was all them eh ?On the roar someone had been watching the new skills coach Mick Byrne doing a drill where he booted the ball hard ,fast and at short range to them .None of them could catch it and he told them straight up the ABs were all expected to catch it most of the time some did it all of the time and in the end of the last Bledisloe you saw the young subbie pluck just such a ball outta the air .Thats the new standard,
