Aki literally had a step to adjust his tackle downwards. Not enough time. This was not premeditated, it was instinctive. Quite different from the Ole Cruz tackle last week. We have now pretty much got to the point where any contact to the head is illegal. But how do you avoid that in a rugby game. The way this is playing out, we could have a WC final decided by a red card. Every team now has to consider the possibility and dramatically lower the tackling plane. Perhaps that's what WR wants....but these changes need to be made and as vigorously enforced between WCs, so players can make this all instinctive.

Problem is that is already in the laws of rugby and was really more strictly enforced since the death of two rugby players in France.

precedent set in the aus v fiji game with hodge getting 3wks for innocous tackle that maybe yellow at best...
from a player safety perspective... well so long as thay are consistent can live with the directive..
the bigger issue is that certain teams get away with foul play still even with overwhelming video evidence and other teams eg Ireland / Argies cop it by either over zealous TMOs or ones with an angenda.......
For the record --- IMO contact to the head is very dangerous and with the physical conditioning of modern players (size / speed) it really is no surprise rugby cracking down on it... lets see some consistency though!

Agreed this red card crap is going too far. It’s bloody rugby for goodness sake If a player intends to harm another then red card him. Red cards should not apply when a players safety is at stake for if that is the case then there should no longer be any scrums for let’s face it a collapsed scrum is hardly safe for the frontrow

And I would add, fetching with the neck down over the ball to be hit by opposing cleaners is more dangerous.....as is gathering high balls. We have gone from judgement to automatic condemnation if it's high contact.

Exactly what I pointed out last week.

There's a point of no return, where the ball carrier is able to shift and the defender has no time to respond.

Aki had no time yesterday. Yellow, fine.

Red, nope.

Yep nanny state politics at play... "player safety" is a bit of a joke when u actually think about it.....

But as most of us here probably have played a game of two of rugby I dont remember personal safety ever coming into it... just the exhilaration of holding the ball, not feeling the ruck marks to the head (when you use to be able to ruck) and just fond memories... yeah knee injury or two but hey thats the game... and frankly wouldnt swap the memories for any of that...

All said... the average size and strength of players 20yrs + ago fair bit different from today... I didnt know 2x French players died... I do know of a young 15yo schoolboy who is paraplegic from collapsed scrum though... very sad... so yep if about player safety where does the nanniness stop / start? 

TO me its still selective though otherwise poms  / kiwis would have had some players cited........

The most brutal high shots I've seen have been in League.

Unfortunately it's not a game I watch so have no idea how it's policed.

mate league... farout every tackle would be a yellow or red card by RWC standards... its a brutal game absolutely gladitorial in comparison...

funny thing is they all just get up and get on with it...

mind u pretty one dimensional gsame... nothing that interesting compared to a well played rugby game like that sco v jpn game...

When I've watched L eague I've always though they may as well wear Football type pads.

In earlier years they use to wear shoulder pads etc but aside from occasional bit of headgear not much protection - The absolute saddest thing about league is that there would be 25-50 walk up potential wallabies playing in the NRL now... 

The GF team that won 2019 season has some of the most amazing backs you've ever seen... but sadly probably never played rugby union, or, left Aust for that matter...
