Stormers utility forward Deon Fourie has signed a two year contract with newly promoted French Top 14 club Lyon.
Fourie, who often alternates between flank and hooker for the Stormers, and has captained them on occasion as well, will join the club at the end of the current Vodacom Super Rugby season.
He is the first of a number of acquisitions for the club, as they are chasing Welsh international James Hook as well.
Fourie’s move is not unexpected, as he almost joined Toulon last year but the deal fell through.
Yann Roubert, President of Lyon Rugby expressed his delight with the signing.
"We are very pleased to welcome Deon. He proved his talent by playing both at hooker and flank and his leadership by being captain of the Stormers and Western Province. There is great pride that he chose Lyon. "
Fourie told the club’s website: “I am excited to join Lyon Rugby, who have big ambitions in Top 14 next season. I'm sure this is only the beginning of a long and successful collaboration. "
Fourie joins the likes of George Smith, Stephen Brett and Paul Bonnefond in the team as the new signings.
In other news, Johan Goosen’s move to Racing Metro is due to be confirmed within days, even though the Bok flyhalf has been called up to the national squad.
Word from France is that the club decided to wait until after the Springbok announcement and are expected to announce his arrival on a two year contract this week.
