excluding each persons national anthem, what would ur favourite anthems be???
i have to say i always liked scotlands and englands national anthem, especially when they are at home.
scotlands national anthem being sung at murrayfeild is goosegump type stuff.

Welsh national anthem
I heard it live in Millennium stadium. I will always remember it. Of course the ABs demolished their team but still the anthem was great as were the Welsh crowd.

French anthem is also great
These blokes have had a few drinks but they are enjoying themselves

My favourite is Le Marsellaise and Land of my Fathers - with Scotlands anthem following. Although I am a royalist in belief - the English anthem is too restrictive and basically entails only reference to the king or queen - although in the last 183 odd years - reference was to the queen - what with Victoria and Elizabeth II around - they took care of more than 120 years in that period. I also like the Italian national anthem - sung especially when Ferrari wins the GP races.
The non-rugby related national anthem - probably the Wilhelmus of the Dutch - and the US national anthem.

Mike: agree on the French anthem. On the pommie anthem, it is really funny that they sing about "God save the queen" and don't give a rats arse about the other 53 million citizens, lol

Thanks Seb some great stuff.Personally my favourite is Flower of Scotland, our own (when sung reverently) and the nz anthem - Who could have composed that for them. Of course we move from the sublime to the rediculous in their case - the hahahahaka!

I am shocked guys, there's not a mention of the Italian anthem! Hearing it sung in Italy on TV was enough, can't imagine what it was like in the stadium!

Nkosi Sikeleli also gives me goose bumps when sung properly and in harmony! Also seeing JDV's face during the anthem - if only ALL people LOVED AND WORSHIPPED GOD in that manner!

Cloudy, that fool, Ras Dumisane I think was his name, blamed the stadium equipment and said he told the organisers days out that the stadium audio system and microphone was outdated.
Even the latest microphone out aint helping that bloke one bit!

Apart from that exerpt from Holst's The Planets they play at RWC time, I am not aware of any "Rugby Anthems". As far as national Anthems are concerned the French, Scottish, Welsh Irish and first part the Italian (there are really two unrelated melodies in the Italian) have that deep feeling .....and Die Stem, magnificent words if you can just focus on the song itself.
But the one I'm becoming most familiar with is the Austrian anthem, as Red Bull win F1 race after F1 race.

isnt " the world in union " the rugger anthem ? Our anthems OK the Marsellaise is cool and ya gotta love how the ABS reacted to the Irish and Welsh ! pity the sooky IRB wont allow it ,ABS and fans are up for it !Invariably leads to defeat tho for Wales and Eire

The melody in the World in Union comes from Jupiter in Holst's The Planets....the whole work is quite haunting, worth listening to, with glass of one of your nice NZ white wines.

" Flower of Scotland " is a pub song. It was adopted by the Scottish Nationalists. It is what it is, a song sung in the pubs now sung at a Rugby ground !!
Yep, the French got theirs after the Revolution, which was an altogether bloody affair. But my mother loves that anthem, probably her favourite of all.
My favourite would have to be SA's, I don't like the Italian at all. Sounds like operetta to me.

This modern song celebrates Scotland's victory in Battle of Bannockburn. Action which followed the cruelties set in motion by Edward Longshanks and depicted in Brave Heart. The battle was decided between Robert The Bruce and Edward the Second, son of Longshanks.
The song is the more poignant, because it follows cruel oppression of a neighbouring country, with a victory for the oppressed. England was in the familiar role of oppressor.

That's what I love about rugby...it has many offshoots...it encompasses a lot about life...the anthems, the atmosphere...the characters, the humour, the repartee and banter in good spirit against the opposition etc. Then of course the game itself and the technicalities and the potential for more creative rugby. That's what I love and enjoy...it can be a very uniting game if taken with the right spirit and attitude. We have a lot of love/hate relationships but at the end of the day ...it's rugby that's always the winner...whether we win, lose or draw there's a winner in us all. I encourage the minnow nations to persevere because I admire you guys that just play rugby because you love and enjoy it and don't use to knock another nation down. In a wider sense we all can be winners and enjoy this wonderful game...a game amongst all games.

No you see, that's what gets me, I'm afraid. We have sit and hear about the passion and pride of every nation, about how great theirs is yet we ours is not ? I'm sorry, that actually gets on my nerves intensely, I'm afraid. And the Welsh are some of the worst for banging on about it.
Why should it mean more to everyone else than it does to us exactly ? Please explain that to me ? It doesn't. But will I sit there and blub my eyes out singing away in my seat throughout ? No, I will watch my team, I will be engrossed and absorbed in it all, like a true supporter should be and, if we win, I will be proud and pleased. I will not brag or boast, I will actually be relieved more often than not, if truth be told, and if we lose, I will be pretty downbeat or angry or sad. But that will be that. On the flip side, if England, Wales and Northern Ireland were given a vote on whether they wanted Scotland to stay as part of the UK, as they should be given it is our right to have a say on a split, the vote would be we wanted them gone. Not good, hey ?
