The Bok Bench clinches it

 Well done HM and the Boks, I will have the first slice of humble pie for calling against Hogat. The bench was massive and Matfield had yet another good game. Tiny Dave and Mike try not to fight over the rest of the cake.

For the starting players, Matfield was maybe my pick. Great at lineouts and kick off's as usual. Lots of tackles, good ball protection at the rucks, some decent carries into contact, and a great linking player in running moves. He plays more like a loose forward bar kick offs and lineouts, but he is very effective. The Boks usually have lots of strong ball carriers, so it is fine that he plays more like a loosie.

We won it when the game opened up, and the bench really made an impact. But before that...jeez, our back play is disorganized. There's just no semblance of structure. Everyone is just passing to the next guy waiting for something to happen. Le Roux taking the ball at 10 so often is not working. We have a great attacking flyhalf in Pollard, let him run the show.

Oupa made his tackles, but you hardly saw him in general play. This was probably his last start in a Bok jersey. You can't afford passengers at this level, as the way we got creamed in the breakdowns will attest. Contrast his performance with that of Schalk, who just popped up everywhere once he came on and made a big contribution towards the momentum swing in our favour.

Vermeulen was huge again. He has to be the best 8 in the game right now.

Hougaard had a decent second half, but was a cause of many of the problems we had in the first half. Bounce pass, pass into no man's land that nearly led to an Aus try (to his credit he cleaned up that mess himself by getting back for the cover tackle), pass behind Pollard, slow loop pass that put the receivers under pressure. That's just four of the passing mistakes I can remember in the first half, there were more.

We were outmuscled at the breakdowns. Louw's precision was missed. Coetzee battled manfully but wasn't dominant. Etzebeth? What happened to our enforcer? Even old man Matfield was more prominent.

We'll need to be better than this to beat the All Blacks, but well done to the guys for a strong finish. Nice to see us attacking right to the death.

I do try amd make an objective assessment of the players - since it was the ebnch players - in the alst 10 minutes that changed the situation around.   To be quite frank Reinachj is twice the scrummie Hougaard can ever hope to be.  It was not only the breakout where he inititated an attack that led to a try by De Villiers - his service ws snappier thn that of Hougaard.   
I agree with yoiu about Lambie too.   Lambie was always a player with huge ball sence and ability - and was criticized endlessly by poeple who did not want to see what he brings to the game.  The try he scored could have ben scored by Pollard - but definitely not by Morne.   It was not only the try - it was also the way he fotted into the backline and his service wider out that made a really good impression.   
Botha did near to zero on the field of play and he was not of any value.   Burger was very active and showed up well.   Van der Merwe also showed in the short time when on the field of play that he can be a better starting prop than Jannie is at present.
What bothered me about the game ws the first 70 minutes - when we blundered along and was often enough under pressure.   The bench really made a difference - but we cannot depend on the ebnch to constantly make that difference. 
The two outstanding players prio to the bench players arrival were Vermeulen, Coetzee and Etzebeth.
