I’m not sure how much more Vermeulen has to offer, he has been a shadow of his WC self, but time will tell. The same applies to Willie at the back But thankfully we have some quality youngsters looking to take over from these great servants to the Boks At fullback we have Willie hanging on at present, with the classy Fassi as his obvious successor. Other real options are Gelant and Willemse. Kriel at the Bulls looks very good, very tall like Jordie Barrett. Our wings are Mapimpi, Kolbe and Nkosi. Mapimpi is 31 so it makes sense to keep an eye on the options out there. Penxe has been in the extended squad, a good player. I think the best option is Tambwe at the Bulls. Maxwane and Stiaan Pienaar at the Lions are pretty handy. Tyrone Green is quality. At centre our main 3 are Am, de Allende and Jessie Kriel and rightly so. Frans Steyn is a poor back up option at 12 given his age and lack of pace and agility. Willemse might be a very viable option at 12 but needs game time there with the Stormers. I’m disappointed Jan Serfontein, Esterhuizen and Rohan Janse v Rensburg have not had involvement with the Boks. The best young centres out there are Rickus Pretorious and Similane who has an amazing step and eye for a gap - but he needs to muscle up to be taken seriously. Let’s hope we see more of James Mollentze at 12 (currently injured) and Baby Bok sensation Henco v Wyk at 13 who has played for the Lions senior side this year. I like Marius Louw at 12 at the Sharks and Gans at 13 for the Bulls, who also needs to muscle up. At flyhalf we have Pollard and Jantjies as obvious options. Morne Steyn can no longer be considered an option which is made easier by the brilliant form and return of Goosen. Young Hendrikse for the Lions looks a really good prospect. Poor Bosch seems to have fallen from grace now relegated to playing 15 for the Sharks At 9 we have it spot on with Faf, Jantjies and Reinach although Reinach’s pedestrian service is not a positive. Hendrikse looks the real deal having won a cap or two. v Zyl was playing his best rugby under Jake before he departed. Papier showed much promise but seems to have slipped in the pecking order. I like Nohamba and vd Bergh Our props are spot on in Malherbe, Kitshoff, Nyakane, Ox, Thomas du Toit, Koch and Wilco Louw. Sadie has been very good for the Lions at 3, with Gerhard Steenkamp very good for the Bulls at 1. Boan Venter at 1 for the Cheetahs looked the real deal before he departed for greener pastures Our hookers are spot on in Marx, Mbonambi and Dweba. The inclusion of young Grobelaar is a good call. Aker vd Merwe wouod have been a handy member of the squad but now at 30, there is no point Our best three locks in Etzebeth, Lood and RG select themselves. Our back up options do our actual depth a disservice. Orie is an insult, Mostert not physical enough and Nico Janse v Rensburg handy but not the best option out there. The impressive Jason Jenkins is a must, leaving the Bulls has not done him any favours. Jake is a big fan. Ruben Schoeman has been very good for the Lions at 4. JD Schickerling, Moerat, Ruben v Heerden, vd Mecht and David Muihuizen are all good options We do need to find the right deputy for Vermeulen. I’m not convinced by Wiese at all, he lacks brains and composure but I’m not giving up on him. My choice would be Dan du Preez without doubt. Marcel Coetzee is a great player but at 30 he is not an investment worth making. I like Jaco Coetzee but boy oh boy does Evan Roos look the real deal as does Elrigh Louw of the Bulls. At blindside PSDT is the best in the business. I’m not sure why Elstadt is in the squad, powerful but stupid - much like Wiese. JL du Preez is our best option as backup to PSDT. Tshituka of the Lions is a Bok in the making, could be an option at 8 as well. Jacques du Plessis looks strong for the Bulls and would be a great bench option covering 7 and lock. I also like Cobus Wiese, Ackerman and Liebenberg At openside Kolisi rules with great back ups in Kwagga and v Staaden. Kwagga should only play 6. I’m a massive fan of Dylan Richardson at the Sharks as well as James Venter. Xaba of WP is a turnover king

Facts:

  1. Fassi is a man who can run fast, a rather mediocre rugby player. We have too many of these types.
  2. Esterhuizen and Frans are our only test quality inside centres. Dumbian has dragged the team down long enough and must go. Willemse is a better player than Dumbian, but that really isn't saying very much. Not cut out for test rugby, and has absolutely no aptitude for centre play. He is a mediocre fullback. Ende. Pecking order: Esterhuizen, Frans, Serfontein and then a cliff, with some inhabitants below in Class Acts Ville.
  3. With Mapoe being as old as he is, we have only one specialist 13 in Am. Kriel never made the transition to 13. Similane is fast, and brittle as Goosen. Absolutely shocking defence and reading of play.
  4. At 10, Pollard and Jantjies are our solidified options. Morné has looked good when on, but we can't build our future on him obviously. The cupboard is bare.
  5. Reinach, a player I never rated, has played the best rugby at 9 this season. Unlike Faf and Jantjies, he showed skills and accuracy. Faf never was a skillful player, he is a tough disruptor; Januarie 2.0. When disruptive, he amplifies our barbarian style defence. Reinach is still better. Schreuder is the best with players outside the squad in consideration, and van Zyl was always a fundamentally sound 9 - a rarity in South Africa.
  6. Our props are a mixed bag. There's depth but inconsistency.
  7. Marx is our premier hooker, now more accurate than Mbonambi. Dweba is overrated.
  8. At lock we have Eben, RG, Mostert and van Rensburg. The weak, slow, unskilled, unathletic failure in Limp/Lomp is a soft underbelly of the team.
  9. Wiese has been the best 8 this season, and one of the few Boks who registered in any statistical category - was a leader for metres carried until Thor was promoted. Wiese was improving nicely. He showed courage to be thrown in at the deep end. Has made some mistakes, but has actually been very quick to learn and become more accurate. Thor has not bettered him, though has made decisive contributions in the last two tests. Wiese is the rightful starter.
  10. Marcel Coetzee has failed in every stint with the Boks. A pap and slow non-entity. He has had countless chances to solidify a place in the team but has never delivered. José had a look at him for the World Cup and discarded him. Roos has done nothing just yet, to put him up there ahead of a player who is delivering, in Wiese? That just stupidity.
  11. Steph, otherwise known as PTSD, is not in the running for consideration. Provides the team with nothing. Dan would be a good choice here. PTSD is slow, immobile, unskilled, quite weak and stupid. Also passive.
  12. Kolisi at his very best has done the absolute minimum expected. At times he looked okay because the Boks in general have played so poorly. He is overrated and comprehensively outclassed by Kwagga. Kwagga being so talented that he has excelled in every position in the back row. Van Staden would be number two behind Kolisi, but still has a lot to prove.

Wiese was good against Argentina but has not done much in other tests.
He will get more time, but perhaps a flat-track bully against the Minnows, with the jury it still out i f he has enough grey matter.

For me there are better options at 8 than Wiese in Dan du Preez, Jaco Coetzee, Evan Roos, Elrigh Louw and Tshituka
