Without the dynamism of Pollard and Le Roux, our two attacking architects in the RC, there was just nothing happening. Everyone picks the nearest defender and runs into him. Lambie at 10 gives the opposition nothing to think about. He is a non-factor. Pollard's on a few minutes and he breaks the line and nearly scores. If only he and Du Preez came on at the switch, how different things could have been.
Schalk was the most creative player for the Boks . Fourie du Preez looked so much sharper than Pienaar despite not having played in forever. He might just still have it.
As for the rest. Kickety kickety kick. Bash, ruck, bash, ruck, bash, ruck. 4 Man overlap on the tryline? Wait, we must still go through the channels. Aww, dropped it. Seems like Dumb Brute Force is the only card in Meyer's pack.
Very happy for Japan and Eddie Jones. Fantastic effort, and best of all they won playing a skillful, highly entertaining brand of rugby.

The whole team was a disgrace and Burger probably worse than the rest.  he voirtuially bugger up with every ball he handled or touched.Hwe lot ball possession continuously and the one penalty he gave away was a nice donation to the Japanese point tally.
Believe me - you cannot select a player on reputation without performance and Meyer selected a squad that was doomed from the start and the team he selected today was totally disastrous.
Lets look at one aspect.  De Jager was replaced by Meyer after he was the ebst forward player in the team.   Why not replace the weak Matfield and leave De Jager on the field of play?

I thought Schalk was our best player. No one tried harder, and with the sheer number of times he handled the ball there was bound to be some mistakes. He certainly looked more like creating something than Lambie did. He was the only player trying something different than smashing and bashing, with some great offloads out of the tackle and strong runs.

Pakie ou maaaikie is being plain dumb re Burger who was was huge. How aguy can not see that is weird. But it not only Pollard and Willie we were missing. We miss having an attacking scrummie like hougard, reinach or a Faf de Klerk! We miss Allende as well.meyer denuded our backline of the attacking players. He has no clue whatsoever.
Du Preez though has such a sharp rugby brain that he can create things and he made a difference.

What did De Allende's efforts in his powerful performance against the All Blacks lead to? Nothing. So what's your point?

You are a good one to call anybody dishonest - be honest for a change and admit that Meyer buggered up badly with the selection of his squad for this WC in the first instance and that you were wrong in supporting his idiocy.

Muncher, I was responding to Mike saying Burger's efforts amounted to nothing, trying to demonstrate that a strong performance doesn't guarantee a favourable result,  and cannot be discounted on that basis.

pakie if you lose the battle of the breakdown your whole backline will look like a slapped ass. so even if de allende played i am sure it would not have made a difference. thats how bad things were tonight.
any coach that understands post elv era rugby should know this. you lose the battle of the breakdown you lose the game

nobody can deny that Burger made a huge effort,........ his workrate was incredible,...... he tried,... and tried,..... and tried,.... and tried,..... but got nothing
no break lines, no gaps open for his teammates, barely gaining the advantage line,..... just bashing the defensive line once and again like the bunny of the batteries,...... IMO that cannot be rated as a good performance

he made a effort but you cannot say that a 8th man not covering his second tier on defence most of the times did his actual job....if you had to compare his running lines with a vermeulen or a kieran ried its blatantly obvious that burger is a natural blindsider trying to play 8th man....he tried yes but he is just one of many playing out of his jumper

I agree with Mallet that the game over came earlier when the Boks were 7 points ahead. We got a penalty and went for the touchline, which we got. Matfield got the ball from a yet again, uncontested lineout, but despite the fact the rolling mauls was about the only area where the Boks had a clear upperhand, Schalk decided to break right around the lineout notwithstanding the touchline was only a yard or two away. The Japs pushed him into touch with ease, while had the Boks stayed with their strongpoint, it would most probably have resulted in a try with a 7-pointer a real possibility.

    Schalk had a poor game.

Burger style of play is well know by each and every guy playing international rugby.
He will do two things when he gets the ball:
    1. He will try to run through the other team.2. He will make a terrible pass to his team mates and cause a knock-on or loose possession.
He is way past his best and so are many other Protea players.
Oh I also should include the coaches.
Then are all out of touch with the modern game of rugby.
But remember the old SA saying: 'n Boer maak 'n plan.
Well lets see their plan now.

De Villiers did more than Kriel...check the stats. And he didn't miss a tackle to lose the game.

Actually, in backline play, South Africa have never been over coached. SA has never done enough. So that is a lie.

"And he didn't miss a tackle to lose the game"

Rubbish. You can talk all you want about Kriel's miss tackle but De Villiers missed a crucial tackle which lead to a try as well.

    Here it is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vwm8OSch7Os&feature=youtu.be

He didn't offer much in attack either... JDV is clearly well past his best.

We didn't approach this game properly. We should have played smarter. Against Japan, that would have meant exploiting their obvious weaknesses: Height and size. Instead of opening the game up, slow it down. Force then to play for territory, a game that don't natively play in Japan. Force them to contest lineouts, mauls and scrums. Force them to endure channel one hitups until their legs are weary and their lungs are busting, then unleash our backs. Against Fiji in 2007, we nearly got caught up in their running game. However, we forced them to play our game game, and that took the game away from them. The Boks didn't do that. This exposed our poor halfbacks and centres.
