The box kick, oh, the box kick

Yet again it was a Faf box kick that let NZ back into the game. Boks lead 23-6, Faf kicks deep onto Barrett from inside his own 22. Dyantyi (flat out) and Kolisi (at a jog) chases. Dyantyi is not lined up with the ball though. If he was, he would have caught Barrett man and ball. Instead he has to change direction at the last moment to get to Barrett - impossible to do when advancing at that speed and half a step right from Barrett sends Dyantyi harmlessly flying by. Kolisi then misses an almost stationary Barrett with a very weak tackle. Ruck forms, poorly defended by the Boks, Taylor picks up (Kolisi once again lets him get away from him) and feeds A Smith who scores.

We cannot afford to make these kicks with Dyantyi as chaser. He has neither the ability under the high ball nor the judgement or timing to turn these kicks into weapons. Kolisi played a starring role in this try as well with a lazy chase and two poor attempts at defense.

I agree, it's something I lamented a short while back. We don't have aerially dominant players to chase aside from Willie, sometimes. It doesn't really work. Every time we box kick, I have a feeling we are going to knock-on or concede a lot of ground.

Thanks for the video Pakie, I've yet to review the game. I didn't catch who made the foul up in game. 

To think, last week, André's ability to chase down and contain the catcher or smash him to ground was talked down. It would have come in handy.

Kolisi is all about open field running. Or tackle busts out wide. For me, the things he does do well don't compensate for the things he does poorly or not at all. 

I read the above with utter amazement.   I thought Mozart and co is still suffering from kicking mania - the only thing that counts in a game.   Keep it up - maybe in years toc come you may learn something about the game of rugby.

Listen dimness - I have never seen a scrummie with more box kicks that Du Preez made and never a flyhalf who kicked away possession more than Morne Steyn did.  Most of the kicks of both were ineffective and possession \handover kicks.

Now that De Klerk did the same - the attack is directed against Erasmus - not De Klerk.  The problem is I think De Klerk is overdoing the box kick story based on two issues -

*   the issue of box-kicking being a favourite in NH conditions and possibly a hangover from him playing for Wasps; and

*   the fact that De Klerk does not take into account that the All Blacks and Wallaby wings and full backs comprises of much taller guys than the Springboks have, making box kicking too man y times just another means of possession turnover.

Kicking is always a variation  alternative in games - repetitive kicking whether box kicking or any other kicking is a real extremely poor way of playing.

I thought what Dyantyl and Kolisi did well was slow Barrett down otherwise he would have taken off and who knows what he would have done. What they did was slow him down so the 2nd Wave of Defense could get him which they did. Erasmus defensive ethos was the rush defense which Dyantyl and Kolisi did to the letter. It wasn't their fault the rest of the defensive line was slow to get there.

Sure Hakwa, but Kolisi still made a really poor effort at a tackle initially and then was very slow in getting back to the ruck. Two steps closer, which a bit of urgency could easily have taken him, and he could have grabbed Cody from behind . I think Luke pointed out the big problem elsewhere though that I missed - Faf not getting to the base of the ruck. That left the gap for Cody to run into.

Again @Pakie, we play as a Team and support one another. The whole defensive line should have been there with Kolisi, Faf waited almost a minute before he did the Box Kick - the defensive line could have had afternoon tea before chasing.
