The British Open thread

So after one round we have 11 players at 3 under or better. The actual scores look low in part because of conditions and the fact that it's a par 70 course, totally missed by the golfing noob who gushed about an early 65. .. The leaderboard is an interesting mix of youth and experience....with Speith, Koepka and Schwartzel as the only major winners. Then there are veterans like Kuchar, Casey and Poulter who have never closed the deal in a major. It was nice to see Ernie and Schwartzel play solid rounds in a poor year so far for South Africa's best golfers. ... Tomorrow could wipe out several contestants as the weather is predicted to be brutally bad. As Ern said, in conditions like that, hit it where you can see it.

Perhaps another pensioner will step up and show the young"uns how it's done.

I'm sure you'll keep us up to date if that had to happen. 

Ernie Els at 42, at the time, surely showed the young uns how it is done, in '12.

Well actually the average age of the field is 33, and the average age of yesterday's leaderboard was 33.....curious how the old chaps don't perform. Give it up Turncoat you are out of your league....try to recover from your Federer backhand embarrassment

 So Jordan Speith wins the Open. What incredible temperament he showed. It all looked lost on the 13th and then a string of birdies and an eagle saw him win by 3 strokes. Amazing final holes!!!! !!!!!!!!!! 

Lots of drama.....Spieth sank two monster putts. I think the adrenalin rush of the 13th and running up and down those dunes settled his nerves. He will be the favourite for the PGA, and now seems to have put his Masters melt down behind him. Spare a thought for Matt Kuchar who had to wait while Jordan went through his options. He is a decent chap who played a Major winning type of round.....but Spieth found some of the magic that has accompanied several of his wins, eg the last one won with a holed out bunker shot. ... Spieth is a phenomenon, Ernie thinks he will challenge Tiger's 14 Majors. But he is becoming hard to watch, with the resets and perpetual slow play that has him on the clock. This from Fox sports last year: ... 'Forget rankings, Jordan Spieth is the world’s best golfer. He’s great from tee-to-green. He’s sublime with a putter in his hands. And so the youngster Jordan Spieth, at a mere 23 years old, cleans up all the elderly folk to take the Open title.

What a display over the last few holes by Spieth to wrap up the Open.
Disappointment to the runner-up as he also had an excellent tournament but how can u not be impressed with the sportsmanship displayed by him.
Two great gentlemen golfers providing a fitting climax to the Open.
