I was very disappointed with the performances of De Allende since his return from injury - the spark was missing.  However in the last 25 minutes of the test on Saturday he was back to the player e was in 2014 and 2015.   There is still some shortcomings - but the way he scored that try was typical of the center he was in the past.     So to my mind the De Allende we got used to is back.

However there is a problem at outside center and the reality is that neither Jesse Kriel – nor Lionel Mapoe is the answer.   Mapoe now had two games where he showed near to zero – much like the two tests in 2012 when De Jongh was tried out at center.   De Jongh went AWOL during those two tests – Mapoe was AWOL in the last two tests against the Irish.

Jesse Kriel is not the answer either – he was really inconspicuous playing for the Bulls this year  and neither was he last week when he got some playing time.

So where to now?   I think the immediate answer is Francois Venter of the Cheetahs – he had a top class game against the Saxons team on Friday.   Then there is in the background another real prospect – namely Harold Vorster of the Lions.  The latter is injured and s unlikely to have any further rugby this year.  Both Venter and Vorster can cover the 13 position – while the youngster Janse van Rens burg of the Lions can cover the no 12 position.

My own feeling is that Mapoe may be better on the wing – he is definitely a better wing than JP Pietersen is at this stage.

Now that be Allende scored a try ... all's forgiven??
No ... I don't think so.
He's as thick as a plank and a defensive nightmare.
We need someone with at least one grey cell at 12. He's sadly lacking in that department.
He creates nothing and leaks defensively worse than anyone I've ever seen. Just not test match material.
Janse van Rensburg, Vorster and Venter should be brought in immediately.

CC's right; De Allende is a nightmare on defence. He just wafts at the opposition on their way through. He'll be a liability against better teams.

de Allende missed a lot of tackles in the first half & also was stripped of the ball. He seemed out of position for the tackles & ran with a high body position on attack.
In the second half boks were mainly on attack so not too many tackles required by de Allende. He ran with lower body position & more determination. Plus the Irish were no longer effective in stripping the ball from the Boks in general. So de Allende did well in the second half including his try. This does not mean his defence is any better though, I agree on that. Since his return from injury he only started looking good in the second half.
His stats
Attacktries   Meters    Carries    DB      CB     point   OL    TC TA     182         18         6      1     4    0 1     0-5

Defence
1 tackle 2 missed tackles
Pretty pathetic defence for a test center.

Who are you to say somebody is as thick as a plank?   Do you personally knows De Allende?

Sorry - but De Allende had a top class performance recording Super Rugby in 2014 and 2015 and you were still sick about Fat Fransie then - now suddenly it is about Vorster - who is a better 13 than 12  and stuck on Janse Van Rensburg who had a few starting games for the Lions purely after failure by Mnisi,   He needs to show a lot more than just playing three or 4 games on Super rugby level.

Now everbody realise that De Allende has to improve his defense to make him an outright top class center.   I have  gone through his defensive stats in all the tests he played in in 2015.  He made 74 tackles and missed 19 tackles – for a missed tackle ratio of just about 20% - which is more or less 5% too high.   Stupid people think that players miss no tackles – but every player does – and the normally acceptable norm is just about 14-16%.   Of the missed tackles 9 was in 2 games – definitely too high – the other ten misses were in 8 games.

So is his defense the train smash every ignoramus claim normally  based on one incident in a match?  Definitely not – but there is room for improvement needed.   The problem is that he is using the wrong technique – that is why he missed tackles – but on average his tackles are strong and often enough carry players backwards.   Since it is a technical problem there is no way that the deficiency cannot be overcome and to just distort issues and say he is a useless center based on defense deficiencies is utter BS.

De Allende had two good moments in the game on attack:
One, a breakout from inside the Boks' 22 where he handed off the first defender and then passed outside.
Two, running over the scrumhalf to score the winning try. And that was obviously significant enough for him to deserve a lot of credit for it.
Outside of that though, he was a non-entity. Created nothing, achieved nothing. In addition to his defence, h is almost total lack of awareness with regards to passing/distributing is a problem too. It will take more than a few highlights against a tired Irish defence to make a convincing case for his credentials as a test 12.

I dealt with the way h e iproved yesterday over the other game this year and dealt with the defense problems - but that is ignored.  De Allende did not beat only one player when he scored that try- there were three defenders he beat in that one move.   So why not look up the stats before you write your tripe?

Listen up, Arsehole ... it's not a matter of fixing his defensive short comings only but also an assortment of on field decisions.
Brute force takes you only so far.
Get your head out your ass for once you dimwitted ret@rd.
Intelligent, innovative play is needed here.
He's just another dumb muscle we can do without.
Till he get's his "technical deficiencies' sorted he's to stay away from the Bok jersey. Test match rugby is NOT where you learn your trade.
Try to use a little more brain, Butt Wipe!!
Also ... do you honestly think that we were waiting on your stats review? It's all you have ... it's all you base any of your arguments on. How many more times are you going to embarrass yourself with that feeble attempt?
What we've seen of Vorster, Venter and Janse van Rensburg at 12 so far is already superior to the defensively deficient, slow thinking De Allende.

No that I'm at all interested in defending CC. But Mike, there has not been an ounce of BS contributed to the Boks by the Lions players who've been given a chance. So I'll say it again. If a player has 12 months of S18 under his belt and he is far outperforming his more experienced "test level" counterparts then he should be given an opportunity. I do think that we have better options than De Allende at centre. Maybe when he is in form that might not be the case but he is nowhere near the player who burst onto the scene and impressed us all. It's silly to expect him to play himself into form in a test jersey. It should not work that way. Maybe Meyer coached his skills out of him as he did with so many players in the past. But he needs to play club rugby until he rediscovers those skills. Sure the try last night was a good one. And yes he made two or three yard gaining runs also...but stack that against the rest of the performance and it's not a pretty picture. We have centre's who can tackle, are quicker and can step. Let's assume that he didn't score that try...a try which was was really a result of shocking defence rather than a skilled run. What would our evaluation of him be today? My guess is a complete 180. Come to think of it - When one looks at the players that remain from Meyer's tenure, they are all really struggling. I guess we can only speculate as to whether or not he impacted their skills negatively. Based purely on results during his time, and performances of players that have now served under both him and Coetzee one would have to assume that Meyer took more from them than he gave. Just my opinion.

Frans Venter does indeed seem the real deal. I always give an extra 10 points to players who play with heart and that kid is pure heart. He would fit in very well with Whiteley & Co. Still, I wouldn't chuck Mapoe away just yet. Performing in his position, as you know, is very dependant on what the rest of the team are doing. The guy is a try machine and he has proved it for two years now. I say let's give him a bit more time.

I think it's fair to say I have warned about Allende's defence back to 2014. It will never improve for two reasons.....firstly he cannot naturally go low in the tackle....two he is too thick to manage the defensive line which 12 has to do.
He also is  A POOR PASSER FOR TWO REASONS.......firstly he never looks for the pass as a primary option.....secondly he doesn't read the movement.

But he is also our strongest runner at centre .....by a big distance. How you use that talent and mask those deficiencies is a problem that may have no solution. But playing him at 12 seems like it accentuates the issues.

Mozart - while you attacked the defense of De Allende in 2014 - you praise a much worst defender - Fat Fransie (who had virtually no attacking and defensive abilities) to high heaven and same with the even worse Juan de Jongh.   In two tests played in 2015 the defense of De Allende let him down.  In the other 8 tests he missed 10 tackles and that is way above the average defensive performance of centers.   You have no idea about defensive lines - the worst contravener of that was Jean de Villiers who frequently went out of the defensive line.    When it comes to rugby - you are as thick as a brick.  So who are you to call somebody thick?

Indeed Mozart ... you called it way back ... and you were right.
De Allende has too many issues to fix. Bad habits learnt over the years and applied at every opportunity without correction isn't that easy to discard. It definitely will not be shed at test level.
I'm afraid we need to look else where for a decent 12.

My only thoughts are to have a proper look at the boys I mentioned above. What do you think?
I don't rate Serfontein.
I know you like "Not So Fat" Fransie ... I definitely do not. He's a mor0n. I watched him over the weekend and saw nothing special about him.

Plum ... nicely put. De Allende's try made his poor performance almost bearable. Without it he would have had another bad day at the office. We need to move on from him.
We need to fill the void Jean's left ... not that he was up to scratch in the end ... but he was a darn sight better than De Allende.
We also have guys like Odendaal, De Jongh, Esterhuisen and perhaps Swanepoel to consider.
Is it really that bad defending me?? Don't answer that.

Regarding Jean ... I thought he looked rather comfortable behind the mic. Took Mallett a second or three to register Jean's quick wit.
Much prefer Jean to that irritating Skinstad. Dislike that dweeb intensely.

"So is his defense the train smash every ignoramus claim normally  based on one incident in a match?  Definitely not – but there is room for improvement needed. "
I cannot see why he still needs a room for improvement. If the room of Super Rugby and the room of a rugby test isn't sufficient then maybe there is no room for improvement and he has just reached his peak.
@CC. "Plum ... nicely put. De Allende's try made his poor performance almost bearable. Without it he would have had another bad day at the office. We need to move on from him."
I think that is where some of the issues are. There is an expression that goes something like: "When I do something right, nobody remembers but when I do something wrong everybody remembers". With some rugby players it is just the other way around. De Allende seems to be one where the latter applies. Yes, the try was nice but what about the rest that was just k@k?
The same can be said about Willie Le Roux, for instance. People get so blinded by the odd occasion where his stuff actually turns into something that they totally forget all the other BS. How many times hasn't he just kicked the ball downfield with no consideration of where he was kicking to and into whose hand? At some stage he looked like he deliberately tried to kick the ball straight into the hands of an Irish attacker , rather than trying to kick it into empty spaces. Or maybe he was trying to give the ball to an attacking Irish player to create a platform for our centres to practice their tackling. Who knows?

So true ... Willie has moments in a match that has everyone singing his praises. The mess he's made of the other 79 minutes is forgiven him ... and next week we see him in the run on team again.
WTF??
Don't the coaches watch the match properly ... or are they just too damn ignorant to realise that what he did was actually harmful to the team?
We have idiots running the show!!
Look at the All Blacks ... Julian Savea showed a loss of form and was dropped immediately. It sent a clear message ... shape up or ship out.
We select the same poor performance week in and week out ... hoping that today he'll be a little better.

CC the Abs are good at that. If someone is good enough he is in. They don't wait years. Milner-Skudder(horrible spelling i know) is a good example of that. Where in Meyer's life would he have been brave enough to start a brand new player in a WC match? Never ever ever.

And the same is true when someone is below standard. And that, in my opinion is EXACTLY how it should work. Anything else amounts to hopefulness. Total BS!

To me, Willie's only saving grace is that when the team play attacking rugby he seems to do better. When he was first selected and Meyer still had some balls the Boks played more attacking rugby and he did well. The more the Boks went into their shells under Meyer the worse Willie seemed to do. The Sharks are also playing Meyers way and maybe that's why he is not doing well there either. A lot of speculation i know. But i guess that's what we do here.

Hopefully, Coetzee picks those Lions players for this week and Willie gets enough rope. Whether he hangs himself with it or not will remain to be seen.

Honestly though, Galant can't come back from injury soon enough. I don't recall being as excited about a SA 15 for some time. That boot he gave a certain Bulls player up the rear won him top spot in my book. haha

The total comments on the game is that Le Roux and De Allende flopped as players.   The real flops are all forgiven and those two gets the blame.

There were four tries scored on Saturday by the Boks - so lets evaluate who was involved.  The Combrinck try would never have been scored without the break made by Le Roux.   He made other breaks as well – but with Mvovo they did not bear fruit.  Willie le Roux is by no means flawless – but the hatred of him by some members of the site is virtually unlimited.

Then there was the second try – a brilliant effort involving all of Le Roux, Du Toit and  De Allende and finally De Klerk passing the ball to Whiteley who scored a very good try.  No doubt a brilliant effort by Whiteley – but what happened in the two minutes before the try was in fact scored are ignored completely by our expert members.

The Du Toit try – the same scenario happened – but in the lead-up to the try by Du Toit – the key ball carrier again was De Allende.  When the Irish tried to recover the ball meters out  – they were penalized and the kick was taken by De Klerk and the try scored by Du Toit.

The fourth try had even more of the same.   Again the ball was carried by Du Toit and then De Klerk passed to De Allende beating three defenders in he process.

However, the issue of penalty kicks stemming from De Allende ball carries was never  mentioned.  There were in fact three – all resulting from the fact that De Allende carried the ball over the gain line and be tackled by up to three players – leaving the Irish on the back foot.   The first penalty was in the first half – when Jantjies missed the kick at goal.   The second one was the penalty awarded before the Du Toit try.   The third one was the penalty converted by Jantjies in the last minute of the game.

So our local experts ignored the above and moaned about the fact that De Allende missed two tackles during the game – in traffic leading to no real advantage for the Irish.    And the try scored by him is ignored completely and it is made out to be that he beat only one defender.

The obvious answer is sticking with the classy Jessie Kriel. You invest in class, just like we did with de Allende and look what he did against Ireland. You don't just throw the towel in on players who dip in form.

Same applies to Willie, Mike Brown and Ford of England.

Kriel proved last year without a shadow of doubt he is the answer at 13.....only a complete idiot would conclude otherwise and chuck in the towel on him.....naïve, short sighted and stupid.

Kriel was brilliant in the RC, made more clean breaks than any other centre in the WC and has had some good moments for the Bulls in the Super series

Stick with class - its that obvious......powerful at 97kg, faster than any other 13 in the country and has a better step than any other centre in the country.

Kriel was invisible in the WC....just as he has been totally invisible in Superrugby.
Kriel is not a player who looks for opportunities....he runs well in space if space is afforded him. Allende doesn't create space....he is not a gifted passer. So an Allende/Kriel combination is left with Allende's tractoring. It finally worked at the death as the Weary Irish fell off their tackles.....the ABs won't miss Allende tractoring.

And defensively Allende cannot tackle head on....he just can't, he can't go low, which leaves him waving his arms. Kriel also goes high and clings like a ladies' handbag. His opponent often makes metres in the tackle...often offloads in the tackle. Weak.
The combination of Allende and Kriel won't fire, although individually they may beat some tackles. And defensively they are the weakest pairing for the Boks since readmission.

Ah bullshit you cant be invisible if you are making more clean breaks than any other centre, what utter garbage

He has been good in the Super 18, just like Serfontein has been.

Class is permanent, Kriel is a class act and any coach with clout would invest in de Allende and Kriel as our centre combo.....a combo that looks better equipped than any other test pair in the game.

They proved it in last years RC, there is no greater test.....investment should follow that brilliant start by this pair. Ripping Nonu and Smith to shreds was the measure.

You are lying about their record defensively, but feel free to prove me wrong

You can be invisible if 5 of your 8 clean breaks were against the likes of Japan, Samoa and the US. And if your 1 clean break against NZ came with no defenders beaten i.e. Running through open space. He never did one thing to help the Bok cause and put the final nail in our coffin against Japan.
He has been inferior in the S18, just like the mediocre Step.
Allende and Kriel were given their chance at the RWC....did nothing significant on attack, and failed us defensively. And they have declined since then.

Well Moz fact is every centre got to play against weaker sides that the nature of a WC, so being picky is a little short sighted.

More to the point.....beating more defenders than any other centre cannot equate to being invisible

Therefore your take on Kriel and de Allende at the WC is utter rubbish. de Allende beat more defenders than any other centre in the WC

So you are trying to tell me that our centre pair....one with more clean breaks than anu other centre and the other with more defenders beaten than any other centre in the WC - failed in the WC - that has to be the joke of the decade

Sadly its your prejudice that gets the better of you and the stats make a mockery of your takes

Serfontein has been great this Super series one of the best centres in the comp. Kriel has been good. Sadly Serf is out injured with a wrist issue

de Allende showed on Sat what he is worth......the lad is a fighter and it was only a matter of time before he found his spark. Kriel is the same

Mozart has been anti-De Allende since 2014 – when he endlessly punted De Villiers and Fat Fransie as the Springbok center combination.  He then cottoned onto De Allende’s defense and that issue was settled by indisputable proof that Steyn and De Jongh were worse tacklers than De Allende.

However, Mozart is not one to stop his BS ever – he repeats the nonsense time and again.   De Allende had in 2014 and 2015 two sub-standard tests in tackling -  in the two tests he missed –

*   6 out of 21 tackle attempts against the Aussies - not that was also the result of him having to cover for the poor defense of other players – especially our loosies; and

*    3 out of twelve tackle attempts in the test against Argentina in Durban – where the same thing happened.

In the other 8 tests he played in he missed 10 tackles – but the whole distortion went on and on by Mozart – discarding the factual situation completely.

The dumb Mozart said head on head tackles is the problem – but he does not realize that the problem is not head-to head-tackles – but tackles from the side.  Then there was the lie he spread on the Barrett try – blaming De Allende for the try.  Unfortunately he was foolish enough to post the video about the try on the site and was exposed as a liar.   How any tackles have De Allende made taking the ball carrier back meters and resulting in penalties for the Springboks?   That is head-on-head tackles that happen fairly frequently.

De Allende has a technical problem when players ran to his side and he has to tackle them – but very few serious consequences arise from those cases – since the ball-carrying players basically has to run into traffic to achieve that.

There are no proven combinations...I'd try Janse van Rensburg at 12, and Allende at 13. Allende simply can't be the defensive captain, which is the natural role at 12.
At a minimum that would give us a power combination....and much of my training would be to get them to coordinate defensively.

This man is simple-minded - previously his whole claim was that the `13 center was the main backline player in defense organizing the backline defense - that was when he was championing Jaques Fourie - not it is suddenly the function of the 12.  What a load of continuous crap.  First of all De Allende is poor in head-to-head tackles - when I pointed out the real deficiency - he cottoned on to that one.  Ever understanding anything ever in rugby. Mozart?

Janse v Rensburg looks good but I don't see him as a 12......he is a powerhouse that would be better utilized as a destructive finisher at 13.....I don't see him providing deft touches and creating for others, which de Allende has shown he is more than capable of doing.

The toughest channel to defend is at 13 ... we definitely don't want a defensively deficient rugby player there.
Serfontein is a far better defender than De Allende. Rather have him there than Damian.

Serfontein is not quick enough for 13......Jessie Kriel at 13, with de Allende at 12 is a no brainer with Serf on the bench

They all can't defend....Janse van Rensburg toasted Step through the outside gap a few weeks back. Three years from now none of these players are likely to be in the team.
