The coaching trend

There are very few coaches that can hold their head high today, but Farrel of Ireland and Galthei of France have some of the best win ratios. Eddie has been blowing hot and cold but his win Ratio is still high. Foster is probably the worst All Black coach and you have to go as far back as Ian Mitchell. But his win Ratio is still higher. 

Then Warren Gatland was in the Welsh job for like 9 years and have a really decent lions record. Except against the Boks. 

I would far rather higher Schmidt or Robertson as our next bok coach

I doubt that Schmidt or Robertson would go anywhere near that coaching role,

That would be a lined crossed that would not be acceptable.

You can take Foster tomorrow - No that is wrong - You can have him today.

And we will pay the South African Union to break his NZRU Contract.  

South Africa has to have a South African coach that will go along with the transformation agenda. 
Not sure how a foreign coach would react if he was told before the match how many players of each race must be in the team. 

The b-team performance was bad, but some of the players selected were not even first choice for their union in the URC.

Jake never did go off the boil. You just bought into the MSM koo laid. 

One has to be before they can return Mpower. 

Actually he was very good in his last two seasons. In 2006, injuries to Schalk Burger (broken neck), Bakkies Botha (calf surgery), Jean De Villiers (cracked rib), Bryan Habana (cracked rib), Butch James (groin and knee), André Pretorius (groin), Joe Van Niekerk (C5 & C6 vertebrae), Jacques Cronje (cracked rib), Danie Rossouw (hamstring), Juan Smith (left quadriceps), Eddie Andrews (back), BJ Botha (back surgery), CJ Van Der Linde (Leg), Gurthro Steenkamp (broken hand), Pedrie Wannenburg (wrist surgery), Marius Joubert (fractured hand) among other lesser injuries stretched the Bok's depth to its limit. But, he adapted his systems and beat Australia and New Zealand back-to-back, and ended the year breaking England's stranglehold on us. 2007 was an excellent season. Who could forget leading a star-studded Wallaby side 0-20 at half time with a very patchwork team? Or leading the All Blacks 9-6 for 67 minutes with an even more vulnerable team? Then going on a massive run winning it all? No. Jake is the only coach of the modern era, for South Africa, who has shown an ability to adapt and grow whilst having the strength of character to stick to his convictions. 

Well, Jake also followed Tim Noakes advice to give the players a proper break. So we had about 6 test matches that was used for fringe players. The end of year tour was full of youngsters like Frans Steyn and the the trip to Aus / NZ were also full of fringe players. 

We see the same thing happening now. Watch Mark Kohane go off over Rassie selections and that coaches can make vindictive choices to prove a point and set players up for failure to shut the press and fans up. 

Apparently Mallet did it with Louis Koen. But the difference were that Mallet was a straight talker and just said that he doesn’t rate Koen as a flyhalf for the boks. 

He also said that Rassie wanted to push Coetzee out team selection. 

So coaches are trying to make a point and maybe get rid of the heat which I don’t understand as he is bedded in until the World Cup. Well SA coaches that is. 

That is why I have lost respect because they are not honest. On one hand they playing a political game and on the other they just a bunch of ego driven lies. 

Jake is the master mind of Rassie ball with his rush defence, but he was willing to be experimental even if his model worked for 2 years. And the Boks added a dimension at the WC. So Habana became world player of the year in 2007, following Schalk in 2005. Hell Australia has never had a world player of the year….Jake had two.

But what you miss Dave is Jake’s one bad year in 2006 coincided with many attempts to  replace him….he had to come back to South Africa to defend himself while his team was preparing overseas. Rassie has always had 100% support because he played the political game….Jake refused to so and select Watson, that was the real issue.

The man would coach a school team if that was the only job available. Dave you say you live and breath rugby….so does Jake White.

2006 was rather unfortunate. Massive injuries, some on the eve of Tri-Nations tests, yet many losses were in the dying seconds. The Boks were very close to ending the tournament with three additional wins. The shortsighted amongst us were too quick to pull the trigger and fail to see how 2006 was the foundation of the successful 2007 season. Jake always adapts to what he has available to him. Erasmus has a risk-averse model to try and limit the possibility of mistakes and impose this on every personnel group he coaches. Jake has had a different twist to every team he has ever coached. 

 No. Jake is the only coach of the modern era, for South Africa, who has shown an ability to adapt and grow whilst having the strength of character to stick to his convictions. 

True.

Except the magic is gone. Rassie is a snake oil artist who has run out of oil. Always credited with all sorts of things, Harrassmiss just coached old style ‘skop en donder’ and with the likes of Etzebeth  it worked for a while.

I can't see Rassie bringing in a better coach than what he is. Why not bring in Scot Roberston and boot Niena back to defence coach. 

How about Ronan O Gara, his La Rochelle team has one of the best attacks 

We have Swys blustering away on Supersport, who not bring the man back. 

Nope, Rassie might be a brilliant tactician in the short term, but he soon runs out of ideas and need to find another team to sell the same snake oil. 

Rugby is a fundamental game, you have to be able to kick at goal, scrum well and defend well. Then comes the attack. But Rassie has been stuck on the first 3 and actually gone backwards. 

What is clear is the status quo is a joke. Nienaber standing by himself with Rassie fulminating at a resigned looking team at the half. If Rassie is back he needs to say so.. otherwise he needs to let Nienaber do his job.

That said Erasmus simply doesn’t have the coaches to evolve our current tactics. If he wants to take on this challenge as you put it Dave, he should demote Nienaber, get a backline coach or whatever they call them these days and announce his full time commitment to the team.

Square pegs in round holes is what this Springbok management crew is all about.

Out of their depth and under political restraints.

Ja, I would love to have Robertson, but I'm not sure whether another coach outside of the country will succeed. Australia have had Robbie Deans and now Dave Rennie. Who both bombed badly and haven't been able to turn them into a respectable team.

Then, Cheika has got some decent scalps with his scrappy Argentina team. All Blacks, Australia and now England. No mean feat considering they don't even have a professional team. 

But Ja, Ackerman and Swys was a dream team, maybe a bit to expansive as they came undone when it mattered. 

That said, Rassie has lost his most important coach in Matt Proudfoot. Then he chose Stick and Deon davids to get the representation numbers up.

It's not that easy. You either want Erasmus and the current blueprint, or you get someone else and rebuild the team. This means structures and personnel to succeed within the new systems. You cannot adapt the Erasmus model into a modern game, because it's specifically crafted to be the antithesis of the modern game.
