The Boks did score on their first attempt using this. It could be effective when the Boks struggle to get the rolling maul going. A 5-10 metre lineout is still Bok's most effective attacking weapon.
It is usually easier to set up a maul from the middle of a lineout.
Once it becomes apparent that the throw is going to the middle of the lineout, the props will bind behind their lock. This could clear out some space in the front of the lineout to set the drive by the Boks outnumbering the opposition. It also allows the maul to peel off to the blindside closer to the touchline with forwards, or to have the blind side winger run flat at pace.

Also with the scrum against the touchline using Kolbe at 9 instead of wasted defending the touchline they had an extra player in the backline with Reinach positioned in the backline
Clever little plays being introduced by Rassie and co. Suddenly the Aussie backs had an extra man to defend against
