The elephant on the field

There is always a lot of bleating on this site about individual players (especially how old they happen to be!), but something that has not been discussed is the Boks shocking defensive pattern against the Argies.

I nearly choked on my biltong every time an attacker had enough space to run more than 2 steps.  And this is a team/structure problem not an individual problem, so the blame must go to the defensive coach and from there up to the coach.

Whats the problem?

Guys rushing up out of the defensive line one at a time!  This is the first thing that is drilled into teams on defense.  Keep the line and don't rush up and leave a big gaping hole either side of you.  Everyone in the team was doing it so it must be a tactic that they actually practice.  I suppose it comes from the fact that at times it might be useful to try and stop an attacking move in its tracks by rushing up on the receivers outside and flattening him before he can see you.  But you need to get ball and all and actually complete the tackle otherwise it is a disaster.  All the attacker needs to do is pass or step and suddenly the 'flying V' defense pattern is a scrambling mess.

Anybody have any links to the game?  I'd love to have a look at it again (now that I can relax knowing we somehow won the game) and get some examples (if work is slow that is).  But if you doubt me just have a look anytime the Argies have the ball
