The Elton Jantjies phenomenon: an explanation . . .

I've been a bit puzzled by all this ill-feeling that the Stompie supporters have for their new flyhalf Elton Jantjies but I think I might have an explanation for this strange and irrational hatred on the part of the Stompie Blowhards.

You see, love him or hate him, you have to concede that Elton Jantjies is an unpredictable player with a lot of flair who (like his mentor Carlos Spencer) can be brilliant on one day and total rubbish the next. The Stompie Blowhards are struggling to come to terms with this and I think it's because they've become so used to having stereotypical and predictable backline players of limited talented for so many years.

Everything that Elton does is a mystery to these Blowhards who are much more used to boring one-dimensional backline donkeys like Peter "Robot" Grant, De Wet "I are run straight" Barry, Louis "Skop Hom" Koen, Marius "Turnstile" Joubert and Robbie "Fall Down" Fleck.

Go back even further to plodders like Braam van Straaten, Vlok Cilliers, Colin Beck and Robbie Blair and you begin to understand why Elton is so out of place in a historically sterile and conservative backline that has always been lacking in imagination and has no idea what to do with any kind of talent and flair. 

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying Elton Jantjies is a great flyhalf but he has got what they like to call the "X-factor", he is unpredictable and he does have a spark of talent . . . which means the dull-witted Stompie Blowhards simply don't understand him . . . so they hate him!

Mystery solved! 

Rooi, your take is spot on. Players like Elton need to be embraced not frowned upon. Rugby is very structured and predictable at times - you need creativity and flair to break the mould......Elton provides this, much like Quade and Michalack do. Hell Quade single handedly beat the Bulls with his two moments of brilliance.

Elton needs time to settle in a new side and his team mates need to atune themselves to his unpredictability. Support runners need to expect the unexpected when it comes to Elton. Its such a conservative SA mentality frowning upon a creative player like Elton who does not fit the typical SA mould of a 10 - look no further than Morne.

The Stormers are not comfortable with embracing Elton's attacking style, they prefer to build a game around defence and wonder why the title will continue to escape them. They select little attacking players like Joe, Aplon and de Jongh out wide, but their supporters frown on their pivot who is the perfect weapon to ignite these little guys

I have been a big critic of Jantjes, but this weekend he did show what it is that makes people like. Here is the problem, he did not single handedly win the game for the Stormers, it was a team effort that produced the result. But against the Bulls in the first round he did lose the Stormers that game all by himself (Ok, maybe a bit harsh, but had he just kicked 70% of his kicks, they would have won). I get what makes him unique, flair is to be embraced, but he is just not consistant enough. If one out of five games went pear shaped for him, I'd say it was an acceptable risk, but with him the bad games come far too often, probably one out of every two or three games. He certainly has the talent, but I don't think he has the mentalitiy. For the right mix of talent, flair and everything else, take a look at Goosen. Yes he still needs some polishing, but he is a diamond none the less. Jantjes just is not in the same class, and just has too many kinks in his armour.   

Oh thanks RooiAdder....we can't embrace a player who can be brilliant one day and rubbish the next. How typical of the Stormers fans. Whereas Sharks fans....would just lap up that kind of inconsistency.

Well here's the good news. For the last two weeks the Sharks have delivered. While I would hesitate to say they were "brilliant" against the sorry Rebs.....they certainly were "rubbish" against the Brumbies. But fortunately the Stormers were around to put their rotten play in perspective.

So tell us, Moztrodumbass, if the Stompies are so wonderful and the Sharks are so crap, how come the Sharks are top of the SA conference and how come they made the Stompies their squealing little bitches again already this season . . . for the umpteenth time?

No need for any of your indignant sputtering or cowardly attempts to change the subject, just answer the question.

First off, chump, that's just one game so it doesn't explain why the Sharks are 3 points ahead on the table with a freebie 4 points this weekend for the bye and, secondly, home advantage didn't exactly help your Hapless Stompies when they were anal-gaped by the Sharks in last year's semi . . . nor did it help them in 2009 . . . or in 2007 for that matter.

Nice try, Moffie, but the Sharks don't need home advantage to give their Bunnies yet another beasting.

Rooitwit what has totally escaped you is that ones log position is not set in stone in March!!!! Stormers started slowly but last Saturday they showed the sharks how to play a top side.

Well what's wrong with this application? First we are not dealing with the armed forces. Second the Stormers are scarcely new recruits. Third why would the Sharks want to improve the Stormers discipline?

I mean look who's talking about flyhalf play, the same Blusterbum who declared "Quade Cooper the greatest  flyhalf of his generation, perhaps the greatest of any generation." Hell, that endearing little classic is immortal and earns you the exclusive "honour" of  wearing the thickest layer of egg-nog of this generation, perhaps of any generation, on your dumbass face.

Don't forget......he was a great fan of Pretorius. And this was the classic.....at one time was absolutely convinced Brent Russell, yep the guy who couldn't kick and couldn't tackle, was the man to put at Bok flyhalf.

Ag Look Moz,  I know he's popped a few pearlers over the years and I'll admit I've done some damage to myself rolling around on the floor wiith his side-splitting entertainment but the above and that other classic about the Boks chances of winning the 2007 WC being zero to nil must surely be  standouts. Still, it's beats me how he keeps banging away pretending to know something about the game.
