Toulouse must be dreadfully sorry about contracting some players and they are likelyn to fire their SA agent soon.
In watching the Toulouse - Brive game, I was struck by the presence of three Springboks in the Toulouse starting line-up - namely no 1 Gurthro Steenkamp (normally on the bench - but he did start in this match), no 2 Chilliboi Rellepele and no 9 Jano vermaak.
Why was their appearance so important to discuss on this honoured forum? Obviously the answer is that the forum discuss Springbok issues as well - a topic that is second in importance after personal attacks on members - with the AB team the third topic and the Wallabies the fourth item on the agenda.
Now lets get back to the game last night and keep Steenkamp for the third choice issue - since he is still in the Springbok squad.
Jano Vermaak was - after his scoring of the winning try against Toulon the previous week - bog ordinary this week and struggled somewhat behind a poor Toulouse forwards display. Chilliboi must get the top prize award for the most oiff-target line out throw ins by a hooker in the history of the game - one of which resulted in a try by Brive. A shockingly poor display to say the least.
Now for the celebrated Steenkamp. While he was on - the Toulouse scrum was a disgrace. The scrum collapsed regularly and the result was penalty after penalty for Brive. Outside of that Steenkamp was in possession of the ball three times. In the first case he lost possession forward when tackled, the second one he retained possession and so did Toulouse, the third one led to a penalty for Brive. The first tackle he was forced to make - he missed the tackle - the second one he missed as well. Must have taken lessons from his teammate Jannie in that regard.
Steenkamp is in the Bok Squad - one wonders why?
