A lot of team sport critics cannot see the wood for the trees or better put the cart before the horse. They focus on individuals and criticiism the selection of individuals. The wood is made of trees but the trees are not made of just wood…I hope some are intelligent enough to understand this. And…if you understand the message or the point…it’s a case of getting your priorities right.   A focus on a team sport is this and I stress focus…get a team together that can unite and play as a team…this basically means a unit of 11 guys in soccer or cricket and 15 in rugby…they must work together as a unit…just as battalions and forces must work together in a war…each man in his given role doing the best he can and that must be the striving. Striving is not an individual accolade but an accolade for the team as a whole.   When result orientated is formulated it distorts the aim or goal. When you play well the results come and look after themselves. Play well and do your best that’s all…the results answer that. Do not let people or fear losing interfere with your game…simply give it your best and the results will come.   Obviously individuals are selected on perceived merit of the selector…and opinions on individuals differ from a mass of opinions. And the reasons for selections can either be obvious and simple but the paradox is often more complicated.   Success vests with a game plan and alternatives if the first fails…rugby must a co-ordinated unit individuals playing the best to fit in to the game plan to be the most effective and then RESULTS FOLLOW…results will always follow but when results become a sword of Damocles and fear of loosing sets in it can impair a result.

great post but SA teams in general apart from rugby lack mental toughness. the only way around that is to expose the players to that type of enviroment as much as possible. we have a very easy happy go lucky approach in SA and sports like soccer and cricket suffer for it. the rugby side is different as players play under pressure on a weekly basis.
