I read a bunch of bs about JJs defence vs the Tahs....then I see the Folau try! Here are the facts. JJ makes contact with  Ashley Cooper just outside the 22.... AC drags him for 12 metres into the Bools 22, slowing just a touch, which allows Folau who was 2 metres behind to run nicely onto ACs offload.

Walk in the park. We simply can't have this feeble centre playing even S15 rugby. That's not counted as a missed tackle....so his  stats look fine. But it led directly to a try. There you have a classic example of why stats by themselves are misleading....and a perfect example of how JJs defence helps the opposition.

Oh what absolute rubbish, JJ tackled Ashley Cooper who slipped the pass to Folau......standard rugby......your take is the usual prejudiced bullshit.....let me guess JJ should have tackled AC and Folau

JJ had an outstanding game defensively unlike useless de Jongh who cant even make one on one tackles anymore

Rubbish...he ran 12 metres in the JJ tackle and offloaded. A good low tackle prevents the try.....this love hug JJ gives his opponent is not a tackle. You are so invested in this idea of JJ being a centre you have lost all perspective.

The supposed advantage of tackling high is that if it is done well, it can prevent the offload by pinning the oppositions arms to his sides, or even try to rip the ball out of his hands while tackling.

For that to work you have to hit the player hard enough to stop forward momentum....otherwise you are jersey clinging with both hands....and unless you happen to have a third arm, have nothing to wrap around the player. You're right SB the smother tackle has a role....JJ can't tackle low and he can't smother tackle. I wonder if Bastereaud could do 30 metres cum JJ?

Ah so every defender tackles a player preventing him from offloading does he. JJ tackled AC end of.

Fact is JJ was brilliant defensively all game, particularly with his rushes, but you would never admit that. Blaming JJ for the Foala try is a joke.

A true missed tackle is the one de Jongh effected......that is what one calls a miss

I am not invested in the idea that JJ is a centre, for he is a centre and a Bok centre at that.

There were perceived issues with his defence, he has silenced all this year with a near prefect return in 10 or more games.

JJ has had no ball this year to impress with ball in hand thanks to the Bulls game plan.

No outside centre comes close to this guy in SA

End of what? End of the Bools hopes in the game. He allowed AC to make metres, and offload in the tackle for a try. Those are the facts.  I have no problem admitting de Jongh missed one open field tackle on Saturday....why are you so unable to just admit JJ's feeble tackle attempt on AC led to a try. This guy doesn't have a competitive bone in his body.

The notion that JJ was meant to take AC out and prevent him from offloading is laughable.......that would be fine if AC was some kid playing against JJ and was blessed with no skill.

So in your eyes JJ should have stopped AC dead......that would have been fine if AC had run straight into JJ.......that was hardly the case now was it?

Your perspective is just based on your prejudice against JJ......the actual facts have nothing to do with it. There was nothing feeble about JJ's tackle on AC at all.

End of Bulls hopes within the 1st minute of the game about sums you up with JJ - enough said, its all laughable

So in your view a centre that makes contact outside the 22 and permits an offload 15 metres from the try line has fulfilled his defensive duties. What a joke. A low tackle which was called for would have stopped the moves momentum, a smother tackle was more risky but could have worked....a feeble jersey grab resulted in a try. JJ is a defensive liability....Bosch proved that, Barrett proved that, de Jongh proved that and now AC proves it all again.

I looked at the clip of Sharkbok and you have again published bullshit - nobody dragged anybody for 12 meters as a start.  JJ got to Ashley-Cooper and form the time he got to him till he brought him down was less than three paces.
It was a very difficult attack to defend against because the lock recipient (I believe Matfield) buggered up the kick in badly and from that moment onwards the Bulls was on the back foot.
However, you should not write fibs on this site - it is not really ethical.

Thanks SB that's useful. RooiAAS if you have nothing to say on the topic, slope off to your favourite bar you lush.
Now on the substance JJ is going backwards as per usual, before the tackle. After he makes contact with AC I count  8 strides. He could probably have continued on dragging JJ, but Hougaard jumped on his back and Folau was in perfect position for the offload. Weak defending by a serial weak defender.

Moz I have to agree that JJ is not a hard hitter and barely adequate. He is a wing and the experience he has gained at center will make him an even better wing.
How about this for a future Bok Back line and pack.Reinach, Sweil, JJ, Jan Serfontein, Jordaan, Willie, Mvovo.
Forwards:Coenie, Stauss, MalherbeEtzebeth, Du Toit.Deon F ourie, Willie Britz, Jaque Du Plessis (7)
Nice mobile pack of 930kg odd. Serious running backs covered by two very mobile loosies and a mobile pack. There is not a back there that cant cut a line.
Then we strive to play a balanced game re the Boks of old.

Too many question marks there HasBeen. I can't see that JJ is any better than Basson on the wing....both lightweights but Basson has better instincts, and is better in the air. Jordaan and Swiel may prove too small for test rugby, but I could be pleasantly surprised here.   Serfontein, to me , is just a clone of Olivier an inside step and mediocre pace.

In the pack things are also dubious. Coenie will struggle to survive his neck issues. Malherbe is folded every weekend. and the back row inspires little confidence.

Test rugby players tend to make it clear when they arrive....Willie did, Etzebeth did....but we are in a bad patch. There are plenty of decent S15 players, but so few real test class newcomers.

You see Dave is mostly right. Unless a small player is a genius like Paulse or Aplon, they wont make it. Test rugby requires big, physical fast fellows. Jean is a classic example....man that guy is strong. Trouble is that's what Dave says and then he chooses weaklings like JJ and Goosen....completely contradicts himself.

The only young back I see as having test potential is young Andre Esterhuizen....size, pace and natural aggression. Twenty years ago I would also have picked Swiel, but I fear it's just too much of a meat grinder now.

The one reason why our backlines do not produce any positive results is that they select big players without skills and ball sense and then expect from them to be successful.   The big fellows include De Villiers - whom I also support - provided he does not get blood rushes to his brain) like  he did on Saturday when they caused him to turn nonsensical like happened on Saturday just before he got injured.
For the rest you are talking crap about players - if it is a meat grinder as you say - teams are busy grinding your favourite Francois Steyn in large pieces -  show you what senseless big players can produce.
There are not many teams that play slow hog players - most prefer faster thinking players.

Just watched that try again and its beyond pathetic that JJ was blamed for the try......all this crap about AC running for metres when in fact JJ first covers Beale and then goes for AC and takes him down within 2m of receiving the ball from Beale......what utter hogwash that JJ was in a position to hit AC low and take him out. Given this take, its obvious you only ever played touch rugby. Bloody hell we have a decoy runner in Skelton, JJ covering Beale, Beale drawing JJ, JJ catching AC and taking him down......but fuck me its JJ's fault.........what utter garbage. This is even worse than the shit I read about JJ missing Barrett or Bosch.

Moz your take is a pack of shit and your anti JJ is becoming tiresome.

One certainty is that JJ defence this S15 has been fantastic and I'm damn sure he might even have the best defensive stats of all the SA centres so fat this S15, if he is not top of the list he must be damn close......proving yet again that I am right......JJ has no defensive issues, never has had.

Firstly, shark bok knows more about rugby than rooicunt and I know this as I am yet to see a post from the prick relating to rugby. Only ever attacking posters like a teenager!
To get a better picture of what JJ is all about, one needs to simply pause the clip above on 26 seconds. Have we seen this tackle posture before. Yes we have. Did it result in a try? Yes it did. Did Boklogic and Mozart say it will happen again and again with JJ? Yes they did. Will it happen again? You betcha! As long as this man is playing rugby, it's as sure as Serfontein will step inside when he receives the ball!
Hang in though! Saffex reckons JJ has had limited opportunities this year due to Bulls gameplan. Funny that. Serfontein is enjoying plenty possession. Could this not be a reflection of Serfonteins inside step that Moz so rightly exploits. No surely not! Let's just put it down to game plan. Surely serfontein and JJ can do no wrong! Surely Swiel is not to blame for a dysfunctional sharks back line. It's not his fault he was playing both games sharks looked flat. Surely it's just bad luck!
Open your eyes Saffex you utter puss!

JJ looks like the distaff member of a couple doing the tango when he tackles....he bobs and weaves and goes backwards. At least until the ball carrier offloads. I remember Dave howling about Adi Jacobs failing to prevent the offload in the Lions series....but at least Jacobs stopped forward progress reasonably soon. I can't think of any centre in top rugby who yields more ground after first contact...than JJ. It's hard to call it tackling, tackling implies a discreet motion....the JJ "tackle" is a continuous motion that seems to go on for a while. And often, I might say invariably, it goes on long enough for other players to help....in the Folau case the help came from Hougaard.

Technically JJ's style of tackling is flawed, he is bound to fall off tackles by just thrusting out his hands. Someone should advise him that it's the complete approach of hands, arms and body to effect the tackle.

Last I checked, he brought AC down perfectly.......he must be doing something right given his defensive stats this S15 happen to be one of the best, if not the best of all SA centres.

One only needs to check the weekly ESPN stats to see that JJ keeps kicking arse defensively.

Its just a pity the class act is not given more ball for its on attack that he really shines......but then again he is playing for the Bulls

I read this latest piece of BS and contacted the National Department of Sanmitation in a desperate attempt to get the issue cleared up.  After looking at the problem 0 they said they do not have sufficient vehicles available to remove the mountain of BS you wrote here.
I do not like Engelbrecht and his defense is suspect -  but keep to the truth and it would help.  To manufacture BS does not help your case.

What part are you disputing OOM:

1) JJ made contact with AC just outside the 22?

2) AC ran 8 strides while JJ was attempting to tackle him?

3) He moved forward at a reasonable pace keeping the momentum ?

4) Hougaard recognizing JJ couldn't get him down went to help?

5) AC offloaded without hindrance to Folau who scored the try?

I looked the video clip a couple of times.  The first time Engelbrecht touched Ashley- Cooper was on the 22 line and he brought him down within 4 paces afterwards - not surprising since Ashley Cooper was running at pace and aiming for the gap between Engeolbrecht and Hougaard.
The 8 strides is the BS part -  and the second assumption that  "Hougaard recognizing JJ couldn't get him down went to help"  is also a wild assumption.  Carefu analysis indicated that Ashley-Cooper was already going down when Gougaard came to "help"
The thing that I recognize is that the NZ and Aussie players have developed off-loads in tackle situations to a fine art - our dead head centers cannot do it to save their lives,  It is consequently doubtful whether any SA center or any other  player would have prevented the off-load and to blame Engelbrecht on the grounds you do is totally unrealistic and dubious.

Eight paces OOM  I have counted them. He takes 4 long strides and a series of 4  shorter chopping strides as he waits for Folau to get into position. A low side on tackle by JJ on the 22 could have stopped the whole movement. As it was he bisected the distance between the 5 metre line and the 22 by the time he offloaded. That suggests a full 10 metres from contact to offload. But first contact was actually a stride outside the 22.

So where is the BS....it's with you old chap, desperately lying again.

I am one of those that has reservations about JJ's defence, but in this clip I can see no fault at all. He initially had the player by the jersey but would have completed the tackle without the scrummy's help. I agree here with Mike, Cooper was at pace and running a good line, very few players would have been able to stop him dead in his tracks from that position. JJ made an decent tackle, it was very good play and awareness from AC and Folau that created the try.
Take a look at the start of the clip where the bulls no.7 is dragged almost just as far while making a tackle on Hooper. Is potgieter suddenly a crap defender?
