A man who I've always liked and respected Wynand Claassen who I met and shared a table at the Swazi Sun at a conference where he was a guest speaker has this insight. He is a deep thinking man of intelligence. He talks about the mindset which is sadly neglected in most discussions on rugby forums but he rates it the most important.

CC this article is about the mental attitude of the players itself, not the mind games of coaches although they mention that as well, but Claasen says that is futile activity and often comes back to bite.

He talks of getting the players to think, he talks of giving players authority and initiative to create and use their skills when the opportunity arises...etc, etc.

I fully agree with him...one of the really intelligent men in rugby.

He was a Tommy Bedford type of captain...both relatively small by todays standards..strategic players...both captains and both architects by profession.
