Which one is worse, why?

The Lions have been given ample time in the Super15, and fail to deliver each year.

The Southern Kings cant even win vodacom games against 2nd level teams of the current Super 15 outfits.

The Lions only decent players could sign for the Bulls. The amateur executive team of the Golden Lions could go back to something non- rugby related. The rebuilding phase for the Lions has been ongoing and despite a lucky Curry Cup- they are not going to be Super 15 standard.

The Cheetas have become a good side and can win overseas- now that they are retaining more players.

The sharks are consistently a good team and allways a contender to make the playoffs- although lacking some players in key decision making positions like inside center.

The Stormers and Bulls are amongst the best teams.

Maybe it is time for change- if Kings make it into the Super15- they will also get some new players.

new teams that enter competitions are always crap and flounder near the bottom for years to come. to take a team away from johannesburg SAs biggest city is just mental.

instead of just pushing out the lions, tell the kings to wait untill the comp is ready, cos as good as SA depth is, it cant field 5 quality teams.
instead invest in the lions and help them get their sh!t sorted.

highlanders use to flounder near the wrong end of the ladder for the longest time, but when key players like cowan and thomoson wanted to move to other Zn clubs, they were told no and big incentives were given to them in order to stay and build on the highlanders.
a few fringe players from other franchises were added into ther roster like nas manu from canturbury and a good cagh in jospeh was hired and now they are a finals bound team.

similar approaches need to be made for the lions. like SARU doing their best to get francois styne over to play in SA and the lions, get a high class import or 2 to bolster areas which need it.

The Lions were Super rugby quality until Mitchell and Muir took over. Eloff had them competing with sides like the Crusaders on their turf; still the only SA side to beat the Saders in New Zealand too. Too many knee-jerk reactions by too many typically doff Saffers have stunted it's growth. I warned everyone Mitchell was going to take them downhill. He is held in low regard in NZ and AUS, but Saffers wanted him to go as far as coach the Boks! Two overrated New Zealanders driving two potentially very good unions into the ground.

Now onto the next issue; The Kings. Fact: They will NEVER be better than the Lions. They would lose 200 out of 200 games were they to play them consecutively. The Lions are too one-dimensional and have a poor coaching team, but it is insanity to think that this will translate into the Kings being better. The Kings have a history - in all their guises - of squandering huge sums of money without trace, bad politics and boardroom squabbling and are hopeless and worthless on the field. Once they are being destroyed in record fashion next year the finger pointing and backstabbing with expose this experiment as another typically flawed Nu South Africa venture over a cliff. More shame, more controversy, more waste of money... and for what? The destruction of the Lions? Utterly disgraceful. What this country won't go to in order to destroy every last scrap of itself in the name of inequality. It's frustrating some of the self-righteous things our SANZAR buddies say, particularly regarding the obvious and indesputable march fixing, but South Africa does not deserve respect. It deserves to be exposed and humiliated until it finally gets itself in order. Wishful thinking though. Even with the Boks, we all know the score. Meyer will achieve success and then be pressured and heckled into a corner. It's the same garbage every year.

@der aristokat,

didnt the injuries this year have a more detrimental effect on the lions and didnt mitchell also win a currie cup last year, hardly a small achivement, considering the star studded sharks team they gave massive hiding to.

Currie Cup form has never been an indicator of Super rugby success., at least, only in two instances. The writing was on the wall for those that did not yield to the hype. The Lions were always one-dimensional, Jantjies - like Lambie - was nothing more than another over-inflated myth. The CC is nothing more than a a very average competition; the step up from it to Super rugby is vast. Watching the Brumbies out-class the Lions tactically was immense. The Vrumbies looked like the home team as they utilized the conditions to their advantage. Mitchell has been exposed, Plumtree has been exposed, all these mythes.. exposed.

And please don't forget that many of those 'stars' in the Sharks lineup are grossly overrated. From the Bismarcks, Kankowskis, Lambies, McLeods, Mvovos etc... there is nothing of note. Even Jannie looks to have struck his bold and looks very poor this season. Bismarck having his fourth howler of a Super rugby campain in succession!

In conclusion. Eloff achieved far more than Mitchell with much, much less. Since his departure the Lions have been rudderless.

@der aristokrat,
bismatck and lambie overrated??? each to their own, but ur clearly in the minority with that opinion, as both of them are world class IMO.

also, its obvious that currie cup is a step down from spXV, but my point is the lions last won it in 99, so currie cup victory is no small feat, especially as they had to beat both a star studded stormers and sharks in the finals to do so and both are spXV teams. so while it wasnt spXV, both clubs and the stakes would have made it spXV intensity.

as for the brumbies, u obviously havent been watch their games gos jonkers rubbish reffing is what lost them their game to the bulls, where they ran rampant on the bulls and showed them what attcking rugby is all about, victory over the highlanders and narrow losses to the sharks and chiefs, no team should underestimate the brumbies and the injury ravaged lions achieved an expected result.

while injuries effect every team, the lions have had the lions share of theirs, the beginning of the spXV was looking promising for the lions, untill injury played its part,,

as for eugene eloff, what exactly did he achieve in his time??? cos it was sweet fudge all if i rember correctly, no CC titles and 3rd last was his best position in super rugby and two wooden spoons to ice that unwanted cake..

Card back with a bang but hitting the wall left of center.

Mitchell and Carlos are fine coaches but thye have one third of their players out.  had they not suffered these injuries the Lions would have done a lot better. One HAS to take this into account.

jantjes was very good this weekend. Taute had little opportunity but scored a very good try. I am amazed at how light the Lions front row is and yet they didnt get completley clobbered. a 92 kg hooker!!!!!

James may as well retire. Hollenback looks too slow. eapoe must dicide if he wants to play rugby. Gone severely downhill since leaving Cheethas. Worst of all was the scummie who started he killed their backline!!!!!!!!!!

Queens are adisgrace trying to come through the backdoor via political connections. They would not even be entittled to a playoff match. cant win Vodacom Cup and would not beat griquas, leopards oer pumas all far more deserving than pathetic queens.They have done ZIP to EARN a super 15 spot.

SARFU may get sues re this one! They will have no leg to stand on when queens flop.

Now Joburg, the biggest city in SA will have no Super 15 side and that dorp pe will!

I agree with sasuk  build up lions rather.

However no ways can we have 6 sides!! Not until we can show all SA sides are competive. How many good plalers have been overlooked is aquestion - or are languising on the bench or as part of a large squad. Take Blauw, Kritzinger, Carsten, Quin Roux?
