Lots of hot air about this game, which I have finally had the time to watch. Most stunningly, how was the Rhule try awarded....Stephanie passed the ball on the 25 yard line and it was caught 2steps inside the 22. Steph was turned sideways with a foot still on the 22. Amazing that with video refs these mistakes are still made.
Now to Stephanie....man the hype. So he gained almost all his metres in that one run, beat a tackle that was so bad the Blue hardly made contact and then after running through clean space made a forward pass. Wow!
For the rest he was the same clumsy presence at flank, missing tackles and making half tackles....having the ball stripped off him by Tuipolata. And crucially being overpowered by Michael Collins for his try. No Itoje that's for sure.
JJ seems better at wing, but was disappointingly hauled in from behind when he had a 5 metre start....where was the vaunted pace. Speaking about pace, EB Viljoen lost so much ground in the chase that both Blues defenders were on the deck and he arrived at the perfect time.
Allende was in his preferred role wresting with SBW and by and large came out on top. But when he beats a defender he is mostly static and so the "break" goes nowhere. He has to up the pace, but can he?
Willemse, Kitshoff, Kolisi and Lleyds were impressive. But much of the early go forward was created by Carr, who isn't mentioned in dispatches.
