Ex Keo

Cobus Reinach has gone from Currie Cup young gun to Super Rugby first choice in a matter of months, and it is only a matter of time before he pulls on the Green and Gold jersey.

Reinach burst onto the scene during the 2012 Currie Cup season, displacing Charl McLeod as first choice scrumhalf. This has continued into the Super Rugby season, as McLeod is yet to get onto the field in 2013. (Trouble i she has been "piss" ordinary thsi season)

Comparing them, Reinach is the faster of the two, getting his speed from his dad Jaco Reinach, who was a Springbok winger in the 80’s. His speed is not his only attribute as he also makes fewer mistakes and seems a lot more confident in his decision making. Reinach also has the better boot of the two and can take pressure off his pivot.

Reinach attended Grey Bloem (Pity he didnt stay at the Cheetahs!!!)before making the move to the Sharks Academy, where he came through the Vodacom Cup and Currie Cup age group system. He was backup to both Charl McLeod and Fred Michalak during the last Super Rugby season, but with the Frenchman returning home, Reinach got his chance in the Currie Cup, and took it with both hands.

Coach John Plumtree has backed the youngster by giving him plenty of game time and he has rewarded his coach’s faith by putting in one good performance after another. Should Reinach continue in the same vein of form, it is only a matter of time before he cracks the nod at test level.

Looking at the group of scrumhalves in South Africa, a dour selection for a position that has delivered so many greats, he could quickly become a top contender for the jersey. Current holder of the jersey, Ruan Pienaar, has been solid without being spectacular while Francois Hougaard has failed to show his replacement impact as a starter. (More bad news for snapster!!)

Between Reinach and Nic Groom, the Stormers’ young scrumhalf, the future of Springbok scrumhalves looks bright.

To be honest I thought that groom was better than reinach last Saturday. Reinach has gone into his shell ala Lambie.

I was amazed by this youngsters performance on CC level - in the game ofthe Sharks against the Bulls he made look both Vermaak and Hougaard look like silly beginners.

However, in the first two Super 15 games I was not really impressed with him.   He never did anything that he showed on cc level and although he cleared the ball really quickly and was exceptional in cover defence and line kicking he showed none of the attacking abilities he displayed last year.

One of the things I cannot understand about the Sharks backline performance this year is the malfunctioning of their backline in the two Super 15 games this year.  Last year their backline was one of their most potent weapons - this year there is no sign of it.

  *   Reinach has never launched an attack around the fringes;

  *   Lambie has lost his zip and kick more often than he used to - also showing nothing in attack; and

  *   Steyn is crashballing after crashballing or kicking the balls away  - virtually never passing the ball to the outside backs.

If this is to continue the Sharks backline will also develop the dreadful  dead backline syndrome that bedevilled the Stormers last year and stop the Sharks from making any real progress as they will never get bonus points for scoring of four tries or more..

reinach had a real good currie cup, but spXV is a whole differnt kettle of fish and IMO the sharks would be better served by starting mcleod or at the very least rotating the two around.
reinach hasnt got that authortive halfbacks tone to his game which helps the sharks settle and makes directing the forwards easier. early days though and hes probably still finding his feet, but i really havent seen anyone in the spXV threaten hougaards dream of once again being the Bok incumbet halfback.
if the way groom, reinach have been playing continues, the Boks 9 jersey will be between rienaar and hougaard again.

Sas, McLeod's service is poor, the lad takes 3 or 4 steps before he passes. Reinach and Groom have been good, but nothing special and certainly nothing for Hougaard to worry about

@Clevermike, I saw an article earlier in the week and Plumtree said he is not at all happy with the Sharks backline perfornance so far in 2013. Plumtree insists they are working on it, and things will improve.

The handling by both the Sharks and the Stormers was very poor last weekend.

Frans did take the ball to ground too many times for my liking but sometimes when I look to see where his outside center running lines are, it seems Paul Jordaan is working flexy time.

Frans is probably the only center that can offload in the tackle consistenly.

Sharkbok

I have my problems with the Francois Steyn off-loading in tackle  issue.   He never off-loaded balls in 2012 - when De Villiers was outside of him and in the latest two games he never did so again.  Can he sill do it or is it like Mozart said that his action forward in running into a tavckle situation  makes  it impossible.

Cannnot agree with you about Jordaan though - Ludick sometimes enter the line between Steyn and Jordaan - with him moving out further creating ultimately an overlap for the wings - but normally the balls do not leave the hands of Steyn and the play flops there and then.

I think Plumtree has probably identified the problem already and we will see what happens in the game tomorrow.

WHAT?? What absolute crap. Which ignorant twat wrote that? Completely exposing his lack of rugby knowledge.

Hougaard WALKS the bok side. FACT! He has been our best scrum half since he was able to walk. He has been the form scrumhalf each week. Meyer and Ludeke and the rest of the world are idiots if they cant see that.

Really pisses me off when coaches cant see things like Kolisi is a champ and Schalk was never a good player! Deysel had 5 hit ups in 15 mins and cant make the Bok team? Jantjies is a legend! Sithole to displace Habana.. JDV is past it. Serfontein had a good 5 mins. Put him in. JJ and Taute are the future at 13 and by far our best centres right now so they should displace Serfontein!! Frans Venter should now displace Sithole who just displaced Habana. Mastriet had 1 average game so watch out Frans Venter!! Frans Steyn is the best centre in the world. He has been unbelievable in the last 3 rounds. Make him captain and president of SA!!

Whats wrong with you people that you cant see what I see??

Whats this guys take on elephants and onions and honey bees?

1 word...INSTITUTIONALISED!!!!

Nope, im good..Just giving you an insight of live inside your head and what we see from you! Obviously a lot more personal attacks because we just get under your skin. Very easy to do! Normally its harder to get to clever people as they are smarter to know to shut up when they being dominated but we dont have that problem with you...

Ah so you are getting under my skin are you and never throw any personal attacks my way.

Man you really are easy pickings - what makes the task that more pleasurable is the fact that your rugby knowledge is so damn poor.

Here is a challenege for you, name a single instance of your or Mike's domination of me. Name just one

 jj at 13 - flop

jantjies at 10 - flop

taute at 13 - flop

hougaard at 9 - flop

JDV and Habana past it - no saff, our two best backs last year

Those are just a few rugby flops. We dominate you every post. I literally get the better of our arguments in every post between us!

So you slap the word 'flop' next to a name and by some miracle it becomes authoritative.

Last I checked JJ was starting at 13 for the Bulls and doing a good job. He won a Bok cap last year

Jantjies is starting for the Stormers and won a Bok cap last year

Taute was the best Bok 13 last year and won a few caps

Hougaard at times has been the best 9 in the game and at the moment is the best 9 in SA

Jean proved 2 years ago he is past it. He confirms that everytime he plays

As predicted I told you you would lie about my take on Habana and true to form you are.

So I am struggling to see this dominance you keep banging on about.......would this be from the man who wants Habana at 13, bwhaaahaaaa

Come again?

These are the "offload-stats" for Frans Steyn for the England tour and the RC. He did not play in the EOYT.

Which games were you watching?

1. South Africa (6) 22 - 17 (6) England (FT).  2 Offloads
2. South Africa (25) 36 - 27 (10) England (FT). 4 Offloads
3.South Africa (9) 14 - 14 (8) England (FT). Did not play.
4. South Africa (20) 27 - 6 (6) Argentina (FT). 0 Offloads.
5.Argentina (13) 16 - 16 (3) South Africa (FT). 1 Offload
6. Australia (6) 26 - 19 (13) South Africa (FT). 0 Offloads.
7. New Zealand (5) 21 - 11 (3) South Africa (FT). 5 Offloads
8. South Africa (14) 31 - 8 (3) Australia (FT). Did not play
9. South Africa (16) 16 - 32 (12) New Zealand (FT). Did not play.

I can see two games where he has had no offloads.

FH M Steyn 0/0 3 6/11/2 9 0 1 0 0 6/0 0/0 1 0/0

That  is Steyn versus NZ last year. Two runs, 9 metres, no clean breaks, one defender beaten,  no offloads

Moz, this has nothing to do with Morne Steyn. This is what Mike said:

"I have my problems with the Francois Steyn off-loading in tackle  issue.   He never off-loaded balls in 2012 - when De Villiers was outside of him and in the latest two games he never did so again."

In addition, he said that Fransie NEVER off-loaded balls in 2012.

I count 12 off-loads in 6 games.

Ok Fransie, I stand corrected. But I still have an issue with your stats:

C FPL Steyn 0/0 0 2/4/7 19 1 5 1 0 6/2 0/0 0 0/0

That reads 7 runs, 19 metres, 1 clean break, 5 defenders beaten, zero offloads and 6 out of 8 tackles made. Are you sure you haven't transposed defenders beaten and offloads?

I am sorry I am with Mozart here.  I frankkly cannot remember a single off-load in tackle situations.  He did make a minimal number of passes in some games - and whatis regarded as off-loads could in fact be passes made ny him.  Off-loads mean that it should happen in tackle situations and should effectively be caught and taken further by another player,   Steyn's standard play is ambling directly towards a tackler and going straight to ground creating a maul situation.   The way he carries the ball in such situations and the way he goes to ground in tackle situations viirtually precludes the possibility of off-loads since he goes straight to ground - so I stand by what I have said - he does not off-load balls in tackle situations anymore.

Correct Moz. I had one wrong. This one:

7. New Zealand (5) 21 - 11 (3) South Africa (FT). 5 Offloads,

should indeed be:

7. New Zealand (5) 21 - 11 (3) South Africa (FT). 1 Offload

Fact remains that it is BS that ".................He never off-loaded balls in 2012............."

@Mike. Why can't you just admit that you exaggerated the issue to make your point? It is just not true that he never off-loaded. This is not the first time that you have been shown up with your so-called facts.

Lambie needs much quicker ball to play his natural running game so Reinach is the obvious choice...McLeod hestitates too much...he worked fairly well with a more experienced and streetwise flyhalf like Michalak that knew all the tricks in the book. That would mean that the backline has room to attack and Francois Steyn would be able to offload. I'm sure this going to happen...FS is a class act but slow ball from the 9 inhibits Pat and gives him very little options but to kick or when he passes to Frans,Frans has little room to move and hence Jordaan who is also very talented is deprived.

It's that simple...when Freddie was there...you had probably the 2nd best 10 in the world and his creative ability to play different options...with Michalak opposition never quite knew what he had up his sleeve.

With Lambie playing his natural game you will see less crashballing from Steyn.

Obviously Reinach has to work on his ability to produce quicker ball and I'm sure that has been addressed, at least lets hope so.

Saffex, so because JJ still plays for the Bulls he is not considered a flop at Bok level. Keegan Daniel is Sharks captain and one of our best players and was a flop at Bok level.

JJ chased away from the Bok setup after a couple mins of his shit..FLOP...Jantjies team mates were skipping him against NZL and SA lost full control of that match with him on...He is now successfully fucking the Stormers team up..FLOP..Hougaard was DROPPED for Ruan..FLOPPPPPPP!!! JDV is past it but he was made captain and was our best back? Are you stupid? What cant you understand about that?

Taute was the best Bok 13 last year?? Doubt that highly Saffex. He too was dropped and it was established that 15 is his best position..so at 13..FLOP!

Hougaard is not the best 9 in SA at the moment. Not even close. I will give u a little secret too. Never mind Reinach and Van Zyl..He aint even better than Vermaak in terms of what a 9 needs to do!!

If you are stupid enough to define 10min on the field by JJ out of position on the wing for the Boks as a flop then you are more of an idiot than I originally thought..

Daniel was not a flop at test level, he was played out of position at 8 and was part of a poor Bok display that day. Meyer was a fool for playing a 100kg player at 8. Daniel is a 6 and only a 6.

To say that team mates skip a player in a test match is probably the most naive and ignorant rugby point I have ever read. Jantjies had a solid game against the AB's he did not flop at all.

The only reason Hougaard was moved to the wing, was because we have an ignorant  Bok coach, whose poor record confirms this. Hougaard did not match up with Meyer's pathetic out of touch kick and chase game plan. Pienaar was poor on the EOYT.

Jean was NOT our best Bok back are you fucking stupid? He was a liability at 13 and average at 12. The fact that he was made Bok captain tells me Meyer is clueless and once again his results confirm this.

Taute was not dropped and was the best SA 13 last year. Meyer said that de Jongh was always going to play against Scotland as Scotland were perceived as the easiest game. de Jongh has one mini break and stupid Meyer decides to retain him against England and when it was time for de Jongh to step up against a major side in England - he went awol. Meyer stuffed that selection up, he should have recalled Taute, who according to Meyer had his best game in a Bok jersey against Ireland, the week before the Scotland test.

Hougaard  is the best 9 in SA by some distance, none of the other 9's have his skill set. The only department that is average when it comes to Hougie, is his kicking, but its good enough for a 9
