After much fanfare Bakkies Botha - well past his sell y date - was selected for the Springbok end of the year tour.  He started in the Scotland game at lock - and virtually before the game ended the adulation by some Board members commenced.   He had  according to them a great performance.   However, analysis and stats showed the exact opposite as is evident from the following:-

Botha

0/3/6

4/3

The above against a sub-par Scottish side without 5 of their key players is anything but acceptable.  This was followed by an equally sub-par performance against the French as is evidenced by the following stats:-

Botha 0/0 0 0/0/3 0 0 0 0 1 4/1 4/0 0 0/0

Now there was another announcement by Victor Matfield that he is going to play for the Bulls in Super 15 this year.   This can only be another disaster in the making.   At 36 he is not going to contribute anything to the Bulls other than to holiday in the backline as was his habit in the past.

Both were great players in the past - but by 2010 their performances started to deteriorate and that is a fact.   Botha is still a bog ordinary club player - Matfield  has not played any rugby for two years - but at 36 now wants to return to allow him to play in the WC next year.

Meyer will sign the death warrant of SA chances in the RC and the next WC if he selects those two to represent the Springboks.   They have been great locks in the past - they are not even near to average at present if Botha's recent per formances are borne in mind.

I really like Victor. Seems like a really great guy. Watch when he sings his national anthem. Very sincere face.

Yeah I agree Matfield is just plain stupid to come out of retirement to play at super rugby level. It reminds me of Shumacher in a way...

But I have to say, back in the day,Matfield and Bakkies were a class act.But Yeah its time to let these boys go off in to  the sunset.

I like a lot of players - for instance I think that  Morne Steyn is an absolute young gentleman.   But unfortunately that does no t make them good enough to play for the Springboks.
